Novel Lignin-Capped Silver Nanoparticles against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria.

The emergence of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and the resulting infections are increasingly becoming a public health issue. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are responsible for infections leading to increased morbidity and mortality in hospitals, prolonged time of hospitalization, and additional burden to financial costs. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel antibacterial agents that will both treat MDR infections and outsmart the bacterial evolutionary mechanisms, preventing further resistance development. In this study, a green synthesis employing nontoxic lignin as both reduc

Influence of Lignin Content and Pressing Time on Plywood Properties Bonded with Cold-Setting Adhesive Based on Poly (Vinyl Alcohol), Lignin, and Hexamine.

The sustainability, performance, and cost of production in the plywood industry depend on wood adhesives and the hot-pressing process. In this study, a cold-setting plywood adhesive was developed based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), high-purity lignin, and hexamine. The influence of lignin content (10%, 15%, and 20%) and cold-pressing time (3, 6, 12, and 24 h) on cohesion, adhesion, and formaldehyde emission of plywood were investigated through physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical analyses. The increased lignin addition level lowered the solids content, which resulted in reduced average v

Novel catalytic potential of a hyperthermostable mono‑copper oxidase (LPMO-AOAA17) for the oxidation of lignin monomers and depolymerisation of lignin dimer in aqueous media.

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO) are mono‑copper enzymes known for the oxidative cleavage of recalcitrant polysaccharides with their intriguing and unique catalytic chemistry. Such impeccable oxidation potential has made them highly valuable in the enzymatic consortia for the degradation of ligno-cellulosic biomass. Bioinformatic analysis has revealed an unannotated LPMO gene in the genome of A. oryzae. Multiple sequence alignment showed the presence of conserved "histidine brace" of LPMO in the amino acid sequence of the enzyme. The enzyme, named as LPMO-AOAA17 was recombinantly expr

Ether Bond Cleavage of a Phenylcoumaran β-5 Lignin Model Compound and Polymeric Lignin Catalysed by a LigE-type Etherase from Agrobacterium sp.

A LigE-type beta-etherase enzyme from lignin-degrading Agrobacterium sp. has been identified, which assists degradation of polymeric lignins. Testing against lignin dimer model compounds revealed that it does not catalyse the previously reported reaction of Sphingobium SYK-6 LigE, but instead shows activity for a β-5 phenylcoumaran lignin dimer. The reaction products did not contain glutathione, indicating a catalytic role for reduced glutathione in this enzyme. Three reaction products were identified: the major product was a cis-stilbene arising from C-C fragmentation involving loss of formal

Ferrihydrite transformation impacted by coprecipitation of lignin: Inhibition or facilitation?

Lignin is a common soil organic matter that is present in soils, but its effect on the transformation of ferrihydrite (Fh) remains unclear. Organic matter is generally assumed to inhibit Fh transformation. However, lignin can reduce Fh to Fe(II), in which Fe(II)-catalyzed Fh transformation occurs. Herein, the effects of lignin on Fh transformation were investigated at 75°C as a function of the lignin/Fh mass ratio (0-0.2), pH (4-8) and aging time (0-96 hr). The results of Fh-lignin samples (mass ratios = 0.1) aged at different pH values showed that for Fh-lignin the time of Fh transformation i

Binding of horseradish, lignin, and manganese peroxidases to their respective substrates.

The present study utilizes 1H NMR spectroscopy to characterize the binding of substrate to heme active site of three different peroxidases, horseradish peroxidase, lignin peroxidase, and manganese peroxidase. Information has been obtained on the site of p-cresol binding to the active-site cavity of the cyanide derivative of horseradish peroxidase. This information was obtained by relaxation enhancements of the substrate protons and connectivities between the latter and heme 8-CH3 and a Phe residue. Manganese(II) is shown to bind to ferri-manganese peroxidase and its cyanide derivative in a spe

Mutagenicity of chloroaniline/lignin metabolites in the Salmonella/microsome assay.

Chloroanilines are constituents of many agrochemicals and have been found to be metabolized to succinic acid conjugates, e.g., succinamides and succinimides. The mutagenic potential of five chloroanilines and their succinamides and succinimide derivatives have been tested with two strains of Salmonella typhimurium (TA98 and TA100) with and without rat hepatic microsomal fraction. None of the compounds produced a dose response effect with a two-fold increase in revertants indicating that these compounds are not mutagens or promutagens in these assays.

Beyond Solanaceae: incorporation of feruloyltyramine and feruloyloctopamine into Cannabaceae lignins.

The ferulic acid amides, feruloyltyramine and feruloyloctopamine, have been widely reported as integral constituents in the lignins in several species of Solanaceae in which they function as authentic lignin monomers. In the present study, we demonstrate that these ferulic acid amides are likewise incorporated into the lignins of species within Cannabaceae, including hemp (Cannabis sativa), hops (Humulus lupulus), and European nettle tree (Celtis australis). Structural analyses using derivatization followed by reductive cleavage (DFRC) and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR) sp

Chitosan-Lignin Cryogel Beads for the Adsorption of Diclofenac in Water.

The production, use, and disposal of pharmaceuticals contribute to widespread pollution of the aquatic environment. Conventional wastewater treatment plants are not designed to completely remove bioactive pharmaceuticals such as diclofenac, posing risks to aquatic ecosystems and drinking water sources. To address this challenge, we report the production of biogenic adsorbent beads for enhanced removal of anionic contaminants from water. The beads consist of glutaraldehyde-cross-linked chitosan (or quaternary amine-functionalized chitosan) combined with lignin, and a macroporous structure was i

Mechanistic Insights into Formation of Residual Solid in Lignin Depolymerization.

Current techniques of lignin conversion are challenged by the low carbon utilization efficiency resulting from the severe generation of residual solid (char). Therefore, a better understanding of pathway for char formation is significant and highly desired for lignin valorization. In this work, we propose a fundamental mechanistic insight into char formation in lignin depolymerization, using hydrothermal decomposition as model reaction. The results demonstrate that the char featuring a multi-layer construction of coke and oligomer contains mainly G units, primarily generated from native G-lign

Techno-economic optimization of a process superstructure for lignin valorization.

Lignin, the most abundant aromatic biopolymer on Earth, is often considered a biorefinery by-product, despite its potential to be valorized into high-added-value chemicals and fuels. In this work, an integrated superstructure-based optimization model was set up and optimized using mixed-integer non-linear programming for the conversion of technical lignin to three main biobased products: aromatic monomers, phenol-formaldehyde resins, and aromatic aldehydes/acids. Several alternative conversion pathways were simultaneously compared to assess the profitability of lignins-based processes by predi

Simultaneous Generation of Methyl Esters and CO in Lignin Transformation.

Lignin is an abundant renewable carbon source. Due to its complex structure, utilization of lignin is very challenging. Herein, we describe an efficient strategy for the simultaneous utilization of lignin, in which the methoxy groups in lignin react with carboxylic acids to generate methyl carboxylates and the other alkyl and phenyl carbons react with oxygen to predominantly form CO that can be used directly in carbonylation reactions. The method was applied to the methylation of various functionalized aryl and alkyl carboxylic acids, including natural compounds, to produce valuable chemicals,

Investigation on the structural effect of lignin during the hydrogenolysis process.

Structure has a significant effect on the lignin degradation, so the investigation of structural effect on the lignin depolymerization is important and imperative. In this study, hydrogenolysis of three typical lignins with different structures, dealkaline lignin, sodium lignosulfonate and organosolv lignin, was intensively compared over the synergistic catalyst of CrCl3 and Pd/C. The effects of reaction temperature, time, hydrogen pressure and catalyst dosage on the catalytic performance of lignin species were investigated. The structure evolution of lignins during the hydrogenolysis process

Presence of soluble lignin-carbohydrate complexes in the bovine rumen.

The cell-free rumen liquor of a steer on a diet of spear grass has been shown to contain macromolecular substances in which carbohydrates and lignin-derived compounds are covalently bound to each other. The lignin-carbohydrate complexes are soluble at pH 7 or higher, but precipitate at pH 3. At the latter pH, small amounts of a polymer, assumed to be glycoprotein, remain in solution. Some of the lignin-carbohydrate linkages are broken by treatment with alkali. Treatment with 50mM sulphuric acid for a few minutes at room temperature converts part of the complex into an acetone-soluble product,

Visible light-driven ligand-to-metal charge transfer-mediated selective cleavage of β-O-4 lignin model compounds: a greener route to lignin valorization.

Lignin is the most abundant renewable source of aromatics in nature. The β-O-4 bond is the most predominant linkage in lignin; therefore, methods for the selective cleavage of the β-O-4 bond are of great importance in order to break down lignin and produce value-added aromatic compounds. Herein, we report a visible light-driven, ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT)-mediated, two-step approach for cleaving Cβ-O bonds in β-O-4 alcohol model compounds using titania (TiO2) as a photocatalyst. In the first step, the alcohol forms a visible light-absorbing LMCT complex on the surface of titania, w

Lignin hydrogel sensor with anti-dehydration, anti-freezing, and reproducible adhesion prepared based on the room-temperature induction of zinc chloride-lignin redox system.

In recent years, flexible sensors constructed mainly from hydrogels have received increasing attention. However, conventional hydrogels need to be prepared by high-temperature or radiation-induced polymerization reactions, which limits their practical applications due to their suboptimal electrical conductivity and weak mechanical properties. In this paper, using sodium lignosulfonate as the raw material, a dynamic catechol-quinone redox system formed by lignin‑zinc ions was constructed to initiate rapid free radical polymerization of acrylamide (AM) monomer at room temperature. In addition, D

A molecular view of lignin fractionation in organic-water co-solvents: the effect of the van der Waals over electrostatic ratio of lignin-solvent interactions.

With the escalating demand for green and sustainable development driven by resource depletion and worldwide climate upheavals, the conversion of lignin-a naturally occurring, widely distributed, renewable aromatic chemical feedstock-has long attracted significant attention. The rational design of efficient solvent systems for the hierarchical separation of lignin remains a persistent research challenge. In this study, the key physicochemical factors influencing the fractionation of lignin in organic-water solvent were identified at the molecular level. Integrating molecular dynamics simulation

A silica-supported palladium oxide catalyst (PdO@MCM-41) selectively cleaves ether linkages in lignin model compounds and alkali lignin via intramolecular hydrogen transfer.

Lignin is a potential renewable feedstock for the production of aromatic chemicals but due to the recalcitrant nature of its aryl ether bonds (C-O), and recondensation of depolymerized products, it is challenging to produce aromatic compounds with selectivity in high yield. Here we present that a heterogeneous catalyst containing highly dispersed palladium oxide (PdO) particles supported on mesoporous silica (MCM-41) catalyzes oxidant-free oxidation (dehydrogenation) of hydroxyl group at α-carbon of β-O-4 linkage in lignin model compounds and alkali lignin. The catalyst was synthesized via a m
