MinLinMo: a minimalist approach to variable selection and linear model prediction.

Generating prediction models from high dimensional data often result in large models with many predictors. Causal inference for such models can therefore be difficult or even impossible in practice. The stand-alone software package MinLinMo emphasizes small linear prediction models over highest possible predictability with a particular focus on including variables correlated with the outcome, minimal memory usage and speed. MinLinMo is demonstrated on large epigenetic datasets with prediction models for chronological age, gestational age, and birth weight comprising, respectively, 15, 14 and 1

A Quaternion Weighted Fourier Linear Combiner for Modeling Physiological Tremor.

GOAL: This paper offers a new approach to model physiological tremor aiming at attenuating undesired vibrations of the tip of microsurgical instruments. METHOD: Several tremor modeling algorithms, such as the weighted Fourier linear combiner (wFLC), have proved effective. They, however, treat the three-dimensional (3-D) tremor signal as three independent 1-D signals in the x-, y-, and z-axes. In addition, the force f by which a surgeon holds the instrument has never been taken into account in modeling. Hence, conventional algorithms are inherently blind to any potential multidimensional coupl

Effect of non-linear permeability in a spherically symmetric model of hydrocephalus.

We examine a spherically symmetric model of the brain and apply non-linear permeability in a small strain poroelastic framework. Numerical solutions to the model show that non-linear effects tend to improve predictions of ventricle wall displacement and pressure increase in acute hydrocephalus in comparison with a constant permeability model. Our model is used to study different mechanisms for hydrocephalus: complete blockage of the aqueduct and normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), as well as offering observations on mechanical effects in idiopathic intracranial hypertension. In each situation

[Non-linear model of glottic vibration. Potential clinical implications].

Glottic vibration is governed by a certain number of physical laws which in general correspond, as far as myo-elastic theory is concerned, with the laws of passive vibration of an elastic body under the influence of the expired air. Some of these laws are non-linear, especially those that deal with the exchange of energy between the expired air and the vocal folds. This non-linearity is specially important when it comes to the key concepts of the phonatory threshold and the passive synchronisation of the vocal cords. Based on their experimental work, which has been presented previously, the au

Correlates of intrauterine growth rate: application of a log-linear model.

A prospective study was conducted in the North Arcot District, Tamil Nadu State, India, to determine the correlates of intrauterine growth rate (IUGR), which was assessed using Yerushalmy's classification based on birth weight and gestational age. Using a log-linear model, we studied 4220 single live births with complete information on IUGR and obstetric, paternal, maternal, and familial factors. Parental body weights, consanguinity, and area of residence were identified as important predictors of IUGR.

An integrated model of the human cornea as a linear biaxial birefringent medium.

A novel model of human corneal birefringence is presented. The cornea is treated as a homogeneous biaxial linear birefringent medium in which the values of the binormal axes angle and organization of the main refractive indices vary continuously from the apex to the limbus. In its central part, the angle between binormal axes is 35°, and para centrally, it smoothly increases to 83.7°. The values of the main refractive indices (nx, ny, nz) change, as well as their order, from nx < nz < ny to nz < nx < ny. The transition between these two states was described with a normal distribution (μ = 0.45

A Bayesian convolutional neural network-based generalized linear model.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) provide flexible function approximations for a wide variety of applications when the input variables are in the form of images or spatial data. Although CNNs often outperform traditional statistical models in prediction accuracy, statistical inference, such as estimating the effects of covariates and quantifying the prediction uncertainty, is not trivial due to the highly complicated model structure and overparameterization. To address this challenge, we propose a new Bayesian approach by embedding CNNs within the generalized linear models (GLMs) framework.

Radar Sensor Data Fitting for Accurate Linear Sprint Modelling.

BACKGROUND: Accurate linear sprint modelling is essential for evaluating athletes' performance, particularly in terms of force, power, and velocity capabilities. Radar sensors have emerged as a critical tool in capturing precise velocity data, which is fundamental for generating reliable force-velocity (FV) profiles. This study focuses on the fitting of radar sensor data to various sprint modelling techniques to enhance the accuracy of these profiles. Forty-seven university-level athletes (M = 23, F = 24; 1.75 ± 0.1 m; 79.55 ± 12.64 kg) participated in two 40 m sprint trials, with radar sensor

Linear mixed model better than repeated measures analysis.

We have some criticism regarding some technical issues. Mixed models have begun to play a pivotal role in statistical analyses and offer many advantages over more conventional analyses regarding repeated variance analyses. First, they allow to avoid conducting multiple t-tests; second, they can accommodate for within-patient correlation; third, they allow to incorporate not only a random coefficient, but also a random slope, typically 'linear' time in longitudinal case series when there are enough data and patients' trajectories vary a lot and improving model fit.

A partially linear proportional hazards model for current status data.

For analyzing current status data, a flexible partially linear proportional hazards model is proposed. Modeling flexibility is attained through using monotone splines to approximate the baseline cumulative hazard function, as well as B-splines to accommodate nonlinear covariate effects. To facilitate model fitting, a computationally efficient and easy to implement expectation-maximization algorithm is developed through a two-stage data augmentation process involving carefully structured latent Poisson random variables. Asymptotic normality and the efficiency of the spline estimator of the regr

[Application of log-linear model in the case-parent triad study].

We were introducing a log-linear model for case-parent triad study. Data from a previous study of the association between MTHFR C677T and cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) was analyzed, in order to investigate the maternal effect, fetal effect and their interaction, using a series of log-linear models. Our results showed that mothers who were carrying two copies of MTHFR C677T variant alleles appeared to have reduced the risk of CL/P in offspring, comparing to those with homozygous of wild-type allele. With S2=0.43 (95%CI: 0.19-0.95). No significant association was found for fetal

Drinking patterns and myocardial infarction: a linear dose-response model.

BACKGROUND: The relation of alcohol intake to cardiovascular health is complex, involving both protective and harmful effects, depending on the amount and pattern of consumption. Interpretation of data available on the nature of these relations is limited by lack of well-specified, mathematical models relating drinking patterns to alcohol-related consequences. Here we present such a model and apply it to data on myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: The dose-response model derived assumes: (1) each instance of alcohol use has an effect that either increases or decreases the likelihood of an al

Extending t linear mixed models for longitudinal data with non-ignorable dropout applied to AIDS studies.

One typical missing pattern in longitudinal data is dropout in the sense that some participants may withdraw prematurely and never return. Dropout is generally regarded as a non-ignorable mechanism when the probability of the occurrence of missing values is related to both observed and unobserved data. This paper aims at extending the t $t$ linear mixed models to cope with the problem of non-ignorable dropout for modeling continuous longitudinal data in the situation where outliers or heavy-tailed noises may be present. We consider the selection modeling strategy with a logistic link function

Multivariate contaminated normal linear mixed models applied to Alzheimer's disease study with censored and missing data.

The article proposes a robust approach to jointly modeling multiple repeated clinical measures with intricate features. More specifically, we aim to expand the scope of the multivariate linear mixed model by using the multivariate contaminated normal distribution. The proposed model, called the multivariate contaminated normal linear mixed model with censored and missing responses (MCNLMM-CM), is designed to handle minor outliers effectively, while simultaneously accommodating censored measurements and intermittent missing responses. An expectation conditional maximization either algorithm is

Using neuroimaging to predict relapse in stimulant dependence: A comparison of linear and machine learning models.

OBJECTIVE: Relapse rates are consistently high for stimulant user disorders. In order to obtain prognostic information about individuals in treatment, machine learning models have been applied to neuroimaging and clinical data. Yet few efforts have been made to test these models in independent samples or show that they can outperform linear models. In this exploratory study, we examine whether machine learning models relative to linear models provide greater predictive accuracy and less overfitting. METHOD: This longitudinal study included 63 methamphetamine-dependent (training sample) and 29

An assessment of the effect of driver age on traffic accident involvement using log-linear models.

Statistical models were developed to help understand the relationship between the driver age and several important accident-related factors and circumstances such as injury severity, collision types, average daily traffic (ADT), roadway character, speed ratio, alcohol involvement, and accident location. By using techniques of categorical analysis on the 1994 and 1995 Florida accident database, four long-linear models with three variables in each model with all possible two-way interactions were developed. In order to compare the differences in response between the age groups and a particular a

Random-effects meta-analysis via generalized linear mixed models: A Bartlett-corrected approach for few studies.

Random-effects models are central to meta-analysis, yet the between-study variance is often underestimated when the number of studies is small. In such settings, confidence intervals become unduly narrow and fail to attain the nominal coverage probability. Although several small-sample corrections, including the Bartlett correction, have been developed under the normal-normal model, corresponding methodology for generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) remains limited. This study proposes a unified framework for random-effects meta-analysis within the GLMM framework that relies exclusively on a
