The Tattle About Tongue-Ties.

Ankyloglossia, commonly called "tongue-tie," has been increasingly diagnosed in the breast-feeding infant, with growing numbers of surgical interventions in the last 2 decades. As more practitioners have become involved in the diagnosis and treatment, there has not been a consensus on terminology and indications for intervention. In 2020, the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Foundation reviewed the bodies of lactation, dental, pediatric, and otolaryngology literature to seek professional consensus and note areas requiring more definitive evidence. This article highlig

Mothers' experiences of breastfeeding a child with tongue-tie.

Tongue-tie is characterized by an abnormally tight, short and thick lingual frenulum restricting the tongue's movement. This functional impairment can hinder a child's ability to maintain an effective latch and suckle and may lead to complex breastfeeding difficulties. The primary aim of this study was to explore the experiences of mothers who have breastfed a child with tongue-tie, including their experiences with the health care system. A qualitative description study design was used. Two semistructured focus groups were conducted in February 2016 with a total of nine participants in the lar

Proposal for a myofunctional therapy protocol in case of altered lingual frenulum. A pilot study.

In this article, the authors propose a specific Myofunctional Therapy Protocol for patients with altered lingual frenulum. In such cases tongue muscles are hypofunctioning and their range of motion is reduced. To compensate for this limitation, dysfunctional lingual motor patterns are established, such as the use of some muscles at the expense of others; this negatively affects the development and functions of the stomatognathic system. The Myofunctional Therapy Protocol presented in this pilot study was developed with the aim of making the muscles of the tongue, the floor of the mouth and the

Ankyloglossia and tongue mobility.

AIM: Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is a congenital condition of newborns when the inferior lingual fraenulum is too short and is attached to the tip of the tongue limiting its movement. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between ankyloglossia classification and tongue mobility. In addition, the prevalence of ankyloglossia among males and females was assessed. METHODS: 300 subjects (150 boys and 150 girls) with an age range of 7-12 years were randomly selected from different schools. The distance between the uppermost point of lingual fraenulum and its insertion into the oral

Congenital benign teratoma of the tongue with bifid tip, ankyloglossia and polydactyly: report of a case.

Teratomas of the tongue are rare, and often accompany other anomalies within the head and neck. We describe a combination of anomalies in a 6-week-old infant with teratoma and bifid tip of the tongue, severe tongue tie, and polydactyly. The teratoma was excised and the tongue tie released with no complications.

Ankyloglossia: a morphofunctional investigation in children.

OBJECTIVES: To provide diagnostic criteria for ankyloglossia in children by anatomical measurements; to investigate the correlation between severity of ankyloglossia and a series of morphofunctional findings; to evaluate the potential mismatch between a clinical suspect of ankyloglossia and the authentic anatomical diagnosis. DESIGN: Two different techniques of anatomical measurements and a clinical evaluation of a series of morphofunctional findings were performed. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In 200 children referred for evaluation and treatment of tongue-tie, the length of the frenulum and the i

Ankyloglossia and its influence on maxillary and mandibular development. (A seven year follow-up case report).

The consequences of not treating improper tongue function may be very important as this organ can influence face development and dental therapy. The role of the tongue in the development of the skeletal structures of the face has been considered in different perspectives over the years. For some, the tongue adapts to the "tongue box," for others the "tongue box" has been created and stabilized by the morphogenetic action of the tongue during development and growth. A case of ankyloglossia treated with lingual frenectomy and followed clinically and radiologically for seven years is reported. Sp

Effectiveness of Myobrace Therapy in Correcting Anterior Crossbite in Early Mixed Dentition: A Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the outcomes of treating anterior crossbite in early mixed dentition patients using the Myobrace appliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 30 Vietnamese children aged 6-10 years with anterior crossbite from 2020 to 2022. Oral habits, including tonguethrusting, lingual frenum interference, and tongue posture, were evaluated pre- and post-therapy. Clinical, radiographic, and soft tissue outcomes were assessed to monitor craniofacial, dental, and esthetic changes before and after treatment. RESULTS: The mean age was 8.1 years (SD = …

Three case reports of infants with ankyloglossia affecting breastfeeding.

Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly which may reduce or restrict the tongue tip mobility. The restricted mobility is caused by an unusual short, thick lingual frenum. This condition may cause various problems in infants including breastfeeding in the new-borns. This case report describes 3 cases of ankyloglossia affecting breastfeeding and highlights the experiences of the mothers and their difficulties in breastfeeding babies with it. Comprehensive feeding examination was accomplished, the primary cause of feeding issues was identified, and frenotomy intervention was provided. Post frenotom…

Analysis of the distance between lingual frenal attachment and mandibular incisal edge position in establishing occlusal plane in three different races.

INTRODUCTION: The orientation of the occlusal plane forms the basis for the arrangement of teeth conducive to satisfactory esthetics and function, making it one of the most important clinical procedures in prosthodontic rehabilitation. This study aimed to analyze and compare the vertical distance between the anterior attachment of lingual frenum (AALF) and the incisal edge of mandibular central incisors among three races in Malaysia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 63 dentate subjects (21 Malays, 21 Chinese, and 21 Indians) who were chosen based on the inclusion criteria. Two m…

The buccal frenum: Trends in diagnosis and indications for treatment of buccal-ties among 466 healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: The buccal frenum is connective tissue that adheres the mucosa of the cheek to the alveolar process. When restricted, this condition is commonly known as a buccal- or cheek-tie. Restrictive buccal frena are often treated during tongue- and lip-tie procedures, yet widely accepted classification, diagnostic and treatment guidelines are lacking. OBJECTIVE: Provide a scoping review on the evaluation and management of buccal-ties, including diagnosis, classification, symptoms and treatment, by surveying healthcare providers with experience evaluating and managing oral restrictions. Miofrenuloplasty for Full Functional Tongue Release in Ankyloglossia in Adults and Adolescents-Preliminary Report and Step-by-Step Technique Showcase.

Background and Objectives: Ankyloglossia is a functional term describing limitations of motor activity of the tongue due to the embryological malformation of the lingual frenulum. The lingual frenulum has a complex, three-dimensional structure, it is not only a mucosal fold, which connects the ventral surface of the tongue and the floor of the mouth. Such knowledge forced us to develop more advanced techniques for tongue release in ankyloglossia. The aim of this study is to describe a novel, precise surgical technique for tongue release. Materials and Methods: Miofrenuloplasty was performed in

Geometric model to predict improvement after lingual frenulectomy for ankyloglossia.

OBJECTIVES: Frenulectomy for ankyloglossia is an intervention that often improves breastfeeding quality for both the mother and infant. Current classification systems assess and identify patients with ankyloglossia, but they do not predict the degree of improvement after lingual frenulectomy. We propose an idealized geometric model to quantify the potential effect of frenulectomy for ankyloglossia. METHODS: Our geometric model depicts the intact lingual frenulum as a triangular pyramid of mucosa on the floor of mouth. After incising one edge of the pyramid, as is performed during a frenulecto

Evaluation of the lingual frenulum in newborns using two protocols and its association with breastfeeding.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the lingual frenulum of full-term newborns using two different protocols and to assess the association of the lingual frenulum with breastfeeding. METHODS: This non-probabilistic sample consisted of 449 mother/baby binomials. For the anatomo-functional evaluation of the frenulum, the Neonatal Tongue Screening Test and the Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool were used for the evaluation of the lingual frenulum. Breastfeeding was evaluated using the protocol proposed by UNICEF. Scores were created (good, fair, poor) to evaluate every aspect of the breastfeeding to be obser
