Lingual thyroid is a rare embryological anomaly and originates from failure of the thyroid gland to descend from the foramen caecum to its normal eutopic pre-laryngeal site. The ectopic gland located at the base of the tongue is often asymptomatic but may cause local symptoms such as dysphagia, dysphonia with stomatolalia, upper airway obstruction and haemorrhage, often with hypothyroidism. Two cases are presented, one in a 62-year-old female and the other in a 42-year-old female, both of whom complained of sensation of a foreign body and progressive dysphagia and dyspnoea caused by ectopic li

Ectopic thyroid occurs when it is not located on the normal thyroid compartment. While 90% of the ectopic thyroids were located at the base of the tongue, only 1% were lingual thyroid carcinoma (LTC). Only 56 LTC cases have been reported so far. Here we reported two cases of LTC. Patient 1 was a 47-year-old female with LTC and co-current sub-hyoid ectopic thyroid. She experienced major hematemesis and dyspnea requiring emergent tracheotomy. Patient 2 was a 61-year old female who was presented with LTC with multiple lymph node metastasis and bilateral lung metastasis. Both of the patients' ling

A 34-year-old woman with a history of congenital hypothyroidism and 15 years of obstructive sleep apnoea was admitted with a left submandibular swelling secondary to a dental infection. A CT scan of the neck identified an incidental 27 mm tongue base mass and the absence of any cervical thyroid tissue. This mass was not observable on examination of the oropharynx but was seen on fine nasendoscopy while thyroid function tests showed good thyroid stimulating hormone suppression. Her acute dental infection was treated and, following multidisciplinary team discussion, she was diagnosed with an ect

We demonstrate a rare case of lingual thyroid together with squamous cell carcinoma of the base of tongue. 54-year-old patient presented with left sided lymph node enlargement in regions II, III and IV without any clinical symptoms. Physical examination revealed semicircular bulge at the base of tongue measuring 30 x 20 mm and tumorous lesion was suspected. Neck ultrasound showed pathological enlargement of lymph nodes and FNA of lymph node revealed squamous carcinoma cells in the smear. Further investigation included CT and MRI of the neck depicted ectopic thyroid tissue in base of tongue and

Lingual thyroid has been reported to cause obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) only once in the literature. We present a case of a 49-year-old nonobese female with a 2-year history of progressive snoring, apneas, snort arousals, and daytime somnolence associated with the sensation of an 'enlarging tongue'. She was found to have severe OSA caused by a large lingual thyroid. While positive airway pressure therapy was not successful, surgical resection of the thyroid was curative. OSA caused by lingual thyroid and other oropharyngeal/parapharyngeal tumors are discussed. A careful oropharyngeal examinat

INTRODUCTION: Lingual thyroid is a rare ectopic thyroid disorder, with an incidence of 1 in 100,000-300,000. Surgical treatment options include transoral robotic surgery, transoral laser microsurgery, and coblation; however, these require expensive equipment, which may limit accessibility. We report a case that was successfully treated using an electrohook, a universally available and cost-effective alternative.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 56-year-old woman presented with a 10-year history of foreign body sensation and dysphagia, which had recently worsened and was significantly affecting her quality

While ectopic thyroid is an uncommon congenital condition, the occurrence of malignant transformation within ectopic lingual thyroid tissue is exceptionally atypical. We report a rare case of not otherwise specified (NOS) thyroid carcinoma (TC) arising in a sublingual ectopic thyroid in a 54-year-old male. The patient presented with progressive dysphonia, dysphagia, and upper airway obstruction, accompanied by severe hypothyroidism. Imaging studies, including ultrasonography, thyroid scintigraphy with technetium-99m pertechnetate, and cross-sectional computed tomography (CT), confirmed the abs

Thyroid gland development normally begins in utero during the fourth week of pregnancy. It advances to its definitive anatomical location, situated between the second and fifth tracheal cartilages, often by seven weeks of gestation. An ectopic thyroid gland is characterized by its unusual location, which results from abnormal embryonic development. A 34-year-old female patient presented to the ENT department, primarily complaining of painless swelling in the right submandibular region that had been present for nine months. This swelling was insidious in onset and gradually progressive, with a

BACKGROUND: We describe a rare case of congenital hypothyroidism and an extremely high serum thyrotropin (TSH) level caused by a combination of resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) and a lingual thyroid. As the RTH mutant, R316C, was new, the optimum dose of levothyroxine was unclear. To aid in assessment of the therapy, we characterized the mutant R316C thyroid hormone receptor (TR) and compared it with a common mutant, R316H, using in vitro studies.
SUMMARY: The patient was a newborn female having severe hypothyroidism with a free thyroxine level of 0.36 ng/dL and a serum TSH level of 177 mi

BACKGROUND: A lingual thyroid is a known cause of oropharyngeal obstruction in the neonate. It can be asymptomatic, or present as stridor, dysphonia, dysphagia or dyspnoea with faltering growth. The therapeutic options include surgical resection.
CASE REPORT: A 6-day-old female neonate, born at 36 weeks gestation, presented with stridulous breathing and poor feeding. Although the cause was initially thought to be laryngomalacia, nasendoscopy revealed a lingual thyroid. The baby had deranged thyroid function, as detected on neonatal screening, but this result was not available until a later da

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Thyroid hemiagenesis (THA) is a very rare congenital anomaly defined by the underdevelopment or complete absence of one thyroid lobe. Similarly, ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT) is a rare condition where thyroid tissue is located outside its usual anatomical position, most often at the tongue base. The simultaneous occurrence of THA and ETT is extremely rare, as demonstrated in our case.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old female presented with a long-standing history of anterior neck swelling. Ultrasound revealed right THA along with enlarged isthmus. Fine needle aspira

BACKGROUND: Ectopic thyroid at the base of the tongue is a rare congenital condition, and it is even rarer to have clinical symptoms and require surgical intervention. This disease is easily misdiagnosed preoperatively. This article reports the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and follow-up of a case of lingual thyroid.
CASE SUMMARY: The patient was a 54-year-old woman who presented with laryngeal foreign body sensation and dysphagia for 20 d. The lingual thyroid was considered for general examination, and surgery was performed to transpose the lingual thyroid to the right submaxillary region.

PURPOSE: To determine the anatomical variations and morphology of the external carotid artery (ECA) and its anterior branches.
METHODS: Using computed tomography angiography (CTA), the origin, internal diameter, and surface laterality emergence of the superior thyroid (STA), lingual (LA), and facial (FA) arteries were evaluated retrospectively evaluated and classified. The bifurcation level of the common carotid artery (CCA) in relation to the cervical vertebrae and disc was also determined.
RESULTS: A total of 76 CTA were included in the study. STA originated from the carotid bifurcation (C

AIM: To present a rare case of lingual thyroid detected using a hybrid of single photon emission computed tomography and standard computed tomography in a young woman with hypothyroidism.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 29-year-old woman was screened for autoimmune thyroid disorders in early pregnancy, and found to have subclinical hypothyroidism. No thyroid tissue was found in the anterior neck upon ultrasonography, raising suspicions of an ectopic thyroid. The patient was treated with levothyroxine throughout the remainder of her pregnancy, and developed postpartum thyroiditis requiring an increas

OBJECTIVES: To highlight the specific outcomes of the current surgical procedures for lingual thyroid excision, for benign and malignant lesions.
METHODS: We carried out a systematic review of surgical treatments of lingual thyroid, according to the PRISMA method. We conducted our literature search in PubMed and Ovid. Data was collected concerning patient demographics, tumor characteristics, types of surgery performed, and specific intra- and postoperative outcomes of each procedure. Surgical procedures were classified in 4 categories: transcervical approaches, "invasive" transoral approaches

A follicular carcinoma arising in a lingual thyroid and presenting as a submandibular mass is reported. The tumor showed a mixture of solid sheets of follicular cells and well-formed follicles displaying variable levels of cytological atypia. True vascular invasion was confirmed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of carcinoma arising in lingual thyroid that presented as a latero-cervical mass.

Resistance to thyroid hormone beta (RTHβ) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by reduced tissue responsiveness to thyroid hormones despite elevated circulating levels. The coexistence of RTHβ and ectopic thyroid tissue is exceptionally rare and presents significant diagnostic and management challenges. We report an eight-year-old girl diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism through neonatal screening, with thyroid scintigraphy demonstrating a lingual ectopic thyroid. Levothyroxine maintained free thyroxine within the upper reference range and clinical euthyroidism; however, biochemical c
