We report the first known case of syphilitic gastritis in an HIV-infected person. The presentation of nonspecific abdominal pain and weight loss in a 48-yr-old former intravenous drug user previously treated for asymptomatic syphilis led to a barium swallow which demonstrated linitis plastica. In a multicentric trial the postoperative mortality and the 5-year survival of elective total gastrectomy (TG) was compared with subtotal gastrectomy (SG) for adenocarcinoma of the antrum operated on with intent of cure. Thirty-two patients with gastric polyps and a mean follow-up period of 18 months were analysed. The principal presentation was epigastric pain accompanied at times by haematemesis or melaena. In a prospective multicentric trial we compared the post-operative mortality and the 5-year survival of elective total gastrectomy (TG) versus subtotal gastrectomy (SG) for adenocarcinoma of the antrum operated on with intent of cure. Despite staging laparoscopy (SL) with peritoneal lavage is recommended in US Guidelines in patients with potentially resectable gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma, this procedure is not systematically proposed in French Guidelines. Therefore, we decided to analyze the results of systematic SL in patients considered for preoperative chemotherapy. From 2005 to 2011, 116 consecutive patients with distal esophagus, esogastric junction, and gastric adenocarcinoma ≥T3 or N+ without detectable metastatic dissemination by computed tomography (CT) scan imaging underwent SL before neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

We studied 2,062 patients with adenocarcinoma of the stomach seen at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute between 1944 and 1984. The distribution by site was cardia 33%, antrum 31%, and body 27%; 9% of the patients had linitis plastica.
