Large-Volume Liposuction and Manual Extraction in Lipedema: A Hybrid approach.

INTRODUCTION: Lipedema is a chronic and potentially progressive fat distribution disorder. Disease-related symptoms, such as pain and discomfort, can require surgical intervention when conservative therapies are exhausted. These megaliposuctions are functional in nature and need to be distinguished from esthetic liposuctions. This new surgical approach, the hybrid technique combining power-assisted liposuction (PAL) with manual extraction (ME), has been developed to more effectively treat fibrotic nodules, particularly in the lower legs, where conventional liposuction techniques often fall sho

Improving Precision of Bioimpedance Spectroscopic Analysis for Lymphedema and Lipedema Assessment.

Background: Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is commonly used for the detection and monitoring of lymphedema and potentially lipedema. BIS measures limb electrical resistance, which decreases with fluid accumulation in these conditions. R0, the index of extracellular fluid and lymph accumulation, is typically estimated using Cole modeling, but technical and biological factors can affect accuracy. Methods: Participants with clinically affirmed bilateral leg lymphedema, lipedema, self-ascribed swelling, and healthy controls were included in this study. Impedance measurements were taken using a st

Validation of the Lymphedema Quality of Life Questionnaire for German Patients with Lipedema.

Background: Lipedema, a chronic condition affecting mostly women, involves painful bilateral increase of subcutaneous adipose tissue. The societal impact of this disease is still poorly understood. This study aimed to validate the Lymphedema Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (LYMQOL) for lipedema patients in Germany, assessing its feasibility, reliability, and validity. Methods and Results: A total of 81 German-speaking stage II lipedema patients were asked to complete both the LYMQOL (arm and leg versions) and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaires twice, and this was 2 weeks apart.

Quality assessment of online health resources for lipedema: A multimetric analysis.

ObjectiveThe incidence of lipedema is poorly described due to its confusion with lymphedema. Patient education is crucial for treatment and prevention strategies but also for improving healthcare outcomes. This study assessed and compared the quality of English and Spanish online resources for patients suffering from lipedema using a multimetric approach.MethodsA deidentified Google search using the terms "lipedema" and "lipedema español" was conducted. The first 10 academic/organizational websites in each language were selected. Quality assessment was performed using the Patient Education and

AKR1C1 and hormone metabolism in lipedema pathogenesis: a computational biology approach.

OBJECTIVE: Lipedema is an autosomal dominant genetic disease that mainly affects women. It is characterized by excess deposition of subcutaneous adipose tissue, pain, and anxiety. The genetic and environmental etiology of lipedema is still largely unknown. Although considered a rare disease, this pathology has been suggested to be underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema. Steroid hormones seem to be involved in the pathogenesis of lipedema. Indeed, aldo-keto reductase family 1 member C1 (AKR1C1), a gene coding for a protein involved in steroid hormones metabolism, was the first

[Measurements of skin elasticity in patients with lipedema of the Moncorps "rusticanus" type].

Patients with lipoedema of the typus rusticanus Moncorps show a skin elasticity deficit of the skin of the calf. This is partly due to the derma oedema in the skin of these patients and seems partly to be due to an intrinsic connective tissue defect in the skin of such patients. The auteurs put forward the hypothesis that also present calf muscle pump dysfunction in these patients is the result of a connective tissue defect of the fascia of the muscular compartment, as an expression of a more generalized connective tissue defect.

Abdominal Lipedema: Clinical Diagnosis and Management Through a Proposed Diagnostic Algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Lipedema is a chronic disorder of adipose tissue that predominantly affects women and is frequently misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema. Traditionally associated with the lower extremities, lipedema can also involve the abdominal region, although there are currently no established diagnostic criteria for abdominal lipedema. This study aims to propose a diagnostic algorithm for abdominal lipedema based on clinical features, macroscopic observations, and ultrasound findings. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from 327 patients treated between March 2018 and March 2024

Liposuction for Lipedema Significantly Reduces Benzodiazepine Dependence: A Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Recent research suggests that body contouring surgeries may reduce benzodiazepine (BNZ) use in patients with anxiety or depressive disorders. This study explores whether similar benefits occur in women with lipedema-a chronic adipose disorder causing pain, limited mobility, and psychological distress-who are often prescribed BNZ. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study on 100 adult female patients with Stage I-III lipedema undergoing tumescent or water-assisted liposuction between 2019 and 2024. All participants were on stable BNZ therapy for at l

High-Volume Liposuction in Lipedema Patients: Effects on Serum Vitamin D.

Background: Lipedema is a subcutaneous adipose tissue disorder characterized by increased pathological adipocytes mainly in the extremities. Vitamin D is stored in adipocytes, and serum levels inversely correlate with BMI. As adipocytes are removed during liposuction, lipedema patients might be prone to further substantial vitamin D loss while their levels are already decreased. Therefore, we examined the effect of liposuction on perioperative serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Methods: In patients undergoing lipedema liposuction, blood samples were obtained pre- and postoperatively. Statistica

The Use of Tranexamic Acid in Liposuction for Lipedema: A Retrospective Study on 230 Procedures.

BACKGROUND: Lipedema is a chronic, progressive disorder of subcutaneous adipose tissue that mainly affects women. It is characterized by disproportionate fat hypertrophy, pain, bruising, and marked resistance to diet and exercise. Tumescent liposuction remains the only effective treatment to slow or reverse disease progression, but involves large volumes and fragile microvasculature, increasing bleeding risk. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether perioperative tranexamic acid (TXA) reduces intraoperative blood loss, postoperative bruising, and early complications in lipedema liposuc

Assessment of lipedema awareness and symptom levels in women: A cross-sectional study.

This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted with 395 women to assess lipedema awareness, lipedema symptom levels, and the screening probability of lipedema. Data were collected using an Introduction Form, and the Questionnaire and Screening Model for Lipedema. The mean score on the lipedema screening questionnaire was 6.05 ± 4.58. It was determined that 15.4% of women had a high probability of developing lipedema. We found that participants demonstrated awareness regarding lipedema and that sociodemographic characteristics were associated with lipedema risk.

High Volume Liposuction in Tumescence Anesthesia in Lipedema Patients: A Retrospective Analysis.

Lipedema is a chronic, progressive disease that occurs almost exclusively in women and leads to pathological, painful fat growths at the extremities. Only symptomatic therapy can be offered since the etiology of the disease has not yet been clarified. Liposuction in tumescent anesthesia has established itself as a surgical treatment method of choice. The complication rate associated with the procedure and the pharmacological course and safety of treatment in patients with lipedema has not yet been sufficiently studied. The aim of the study was to broaden the evidence on the safety of ambulator

Lower extremity lipedema, upper extremity lipodystrophy and severe calcinosis complicating juvenile dermatomyositis.

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare but complex and potentially life-threatening autoimmune disease of childhood. Significant proportions of patients have residual weakness, muscle atrophy, joint contractures, and calcinosis. Recently, new clinical findings, such as lipodystrophy accompanied with increased fat deposition in certain areas, have been reported. So far, it is not known whether the redistribution of body fat may be the type of lipedema of lower extremity. We describe a 39-year-old woman who was diagnosed with JDM at the age of 7. Later she developed symmetrical lipodystrophy o
