Multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL) is a very uncommon disease. Its etiopathogenesis is uncertain, although it has been linked to a variety of factors. Its main characteristic is the overgrowth of fat in form of an unencapsulated lesion. Most of the cases reported are in the head and neck region. We report a case that occurred in the breasts of a 62-year-old man. A clinical diagnosis of gynecomastia was initially made. Partial mastectomy was done and MSL was reported on histopathologic examination. Our literature search revealed no previous case of MSL in the breast reported from our environm

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical features and available treatment of multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL).
METHODS: A cohort of 15 cases with MSL registered in the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University was reviewed. The etiology, clinical manifestations, treatments and prognosis were also investigated.
RESULTS: All the cases were performed sectionalized excisions to cut off the lipoma localized in the neck under general anesthesia. During the follow up period, 13 out of 15 cases were cured after the excision with acceptable appearance and normal local functio

Multiple symmetric lipomatosis (Madelung's disease) is a rare disease characterized by non-encapsulated adipose deposits in the neck, the superior part of the trunk and, very rarely, in the limbs. It is common in middle-aged Caucasian Mediterranean males but very rare in Chinese people. We describe two cases of Madelung's disease: both patients presented complaining of a development of a painless neck mass that was increasing in size. Panendoscopy was normal. Both underwent incisional biopsies that revealed benign adipose tissue characterizing Madelung's disease. We discuss the clinical presen

Multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL) is a rare condition of the fatty tissue affecting mostly white men between 20 and 65 years old especially in the mediterranean region. The disease is characterized by a massive development of large unencapsulated lipomas mainly located on the subcutaneous tissue of the cervical, deltoid, thoracic, abdominal and lumbar areas and it is often accompanied by hyperuricemia, dyslipemia, macrocytic anaemia, peripheral neuropathy, impaired glucose tolerance and alcohol consumption. Alcohol could both promote the development of lipomas through changes in the number

We report four cases of multiple symmetric lipomatosis in the Chinese population. We believe that multiple symmetric lipomatosis in the Chinese is not uncommon and may be related to the increasing incidence of alcoholism. The ultrasound appearances of these lipomatous masses are presented for the first time. Heterogeneous echogenic masses with fine fibrous strands that insinuate around fascial planes, lymph nodes and vascular tissues are typical findings. Unlike diseases affecting the Western population, multiple symmetric lipomatosis in the Chinese appears to be limited to the head and neck.

An extreme form of hyperalphalipoproteinemia was studied in a patient affected by multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL); four relatives and three MSL controls were also evaluated. Plasma lipids and apolipoproteins were measured and overall lipoprotein profile was assessed by density gradient ultracentrifugation. The patient showed a plasma HDL-cholesterol of 138 mg/dl and an apo A-I of 218 mg/dl; moreover significantly high HDL levels were found in two unaffected relatives. The hypobetalipoproteinemia trait was also found both in the patient and in one of his daughters. We suggest that some pre

A 45-year-old man with multiple symmetric lipomatosis suffered recurrent syncope attributed to carotid sinus syndrome caused by extrinsic compression of the carotid body by the lipomatous masses. Surgical removal reduced but did not stop syncope, which was then controlled by implantation of a DDD pacemaker.

Clinical evaluation of 33 male patients affected by multiple symmetric lipomatosis has revealed a previously unreported high prevalence of somatic and autonomic neuropathies. In 84% of the patients, clinical examination revealed signs or symptoms of neural disturbances, ranging from a vibratory sensory loss to severely incapacitating trophic ulcers or Charcot's arthropathy. Electrodiagnostic investigations demonstrated a significant reduction of motor and sensory conduction velocity in the peroneal and sural nerves. Morphometric studies of nerve and muscle biopsies from five patients with mult

The responsiveness towards catecholamines of normal and lipomatous fat cells of two male subjects suffering from multiple symmetric lipomatosis has been studied by means of a newly developed bioluminescent method for microdetermination of glycerol. In contrast to previous findings, lipomatous fat cells displayed normal alpha 2-and beta-adrenergic responsiveness in both subjects studied. The apparent discrepancies between the results of the present study and those reported by others therefore support the contention that multiple symmetric lipomatosis is a symptom with various underlying causes

Multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL) is a rare disorder of middle life characterized by large nonencapsulated lipomas distributed around the neck, shoulders, and other axial regions. Neurologic involvement, particularly peripheral neuropathy, is frequent. The pathogenesis of the syndrome is still unknown, but ragged-red fibers are occasionally present in muscle of affected patients, suggesting a mitochondrial abnormality. We studied 11 unrelated patients with MSL by means of neurophysiology, muscle morphology, muscle biochemistry, Southern blot, and PCR analysis of mitochondrial DNA. All patie

Multiple symmetrical lipomatosis is a rare diffuse presentation of the progressive accumulation of deposits of nonencapsulated masses of adipose tissue. The characteristic image of this disease is bilateral swelling in the neck, the upper part of upper limb, pelvic rim, back, and thighs. We report a case of unusual localization of benign scrotal symmetrical lipomatosis with ultrasound and histological appearances of the scrotal lipomatous masses, together with treatment. Scrotal lipomatosis should be considered as a rare differential diagnosis of scrotal swelling, and excisional lipectomy shou

Little is known on the causes and pathogenesis of the adipose tissue disorder (familial) Multiple Symmetric Lipomatosis (MSL). In a four-generation MSL-family, we performed whole exome sequencing (WES) in 3 affected individuals and 1 obligate carrier and identified Calcyphosine-like (CAPSL) as the most promising candidate gene for this family. Screening of 21 independent patients excluded CAPSL coding sequence variants as a common monogenic cause, but using immunohistochemistry we found that CAPSL was down-regulated in adipose tissue not only from the index patient but also in 10 independent s

Multiple symmetric lipomatosis is a rare disease characterized by a symmetrical accumulation of massive adipose tissue on the neck, the superior part of the trunk, and limbs. Here, we reported an extremely rare case of multiple symmetric lipomatosis in a 46-year-old Chinese man, who has a history of heavy drinking and smoking and presented with diffuse lipomatosis and bilateral breast enlargement. Hyperuricemia and impaired glucose tolerance test were all found in this patient. A brief review of the literature was also made in this article.

Multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL), or Madelung's disease, is a rare disease of unknown etiology. It is characterized by the presence of loose adipose tissue deposits localized in the cervical region and upper body. MSL presenting as bilateral huge gynecomastia is an extremely rare phenomenon. The present report describes a case of MSL in a 66-year-old man. The patients presented with bilateral breast bulging. He had a history of cigarette and alcohol use. His condition was treated with a bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomy. MSL can present as a form of gynecomastia, for its accurate diagnos

Two patients with features of multiple symmetric lipomatosis type 2 are presented. This particular disorder with a characteristic distribution of fat should be considered on differential diagnosis of obesity. Besides being rare, it may occasionally be unrecognized, especially in females. The etiology remains unknown; however, the association with high alcohol consumption is very strong. Several issues about the possible metabolic role of lipomatous adipose tissue have been discussed. Patients with multiple symmetric lipomatosis should be treated by liposuction or surgery instead of being submi

AIMS: The aim of the present study was to investigate possible alterations in body composition and resting energy expenditure (REE) in type 1 multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirteen men aged from 40 to 78 years affected by type I MSL were compared with 13 healthy control subjects. Fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) were determined by DEXA using both standard analysis and specifically for the lipomatous region. REE was measured by indirect calorimetry.
RESULTS: FM was higher in MSL subjects at proximal arm level, but significantly lower at distal leg level than
