Limited literacy revisited implications for patient education.

PURPOSE: It is important to determine whether teaching materials are understood and deemed accurate by the cancer patients being served. The authors used a series of patient participatory interviews to evaluate two brochures: Chemotherapy: What It Is and How It Helps by the American Cancer Society; and Helping Yourself During Chemotherapy: 4 Steps for Patients by the National Cancer Institute. The authors sought to determine whether 1) the brochures were clear; 2) differences in presentation were perceived by patients; and 3) differences influenced respondents' understanding and opinions of th

General health literacy, COVID-19-related health literacy, and protective behaviors: evidence from a population-based study in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Health literacy (HL) can be regarded as a key element of non-pharmaceutical interventions used in emergency responses. The present study aimed to determine the associations of combinations of general HL and COVID-19-related HL with COVID-19 protective behaviors and healthy lifestyle behaviors. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted from December 2020 to January 2021 among residents in Japanese metropolitan areas. Valid responses were received from 1,443 residents. The levels of HL were categorized into four groups: low level in both HLs (reference), high level in general

Health literacy levels of British adults: a cross-sectional survey using two domains of the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ).

BACKGROUND: A person's health literacy determines whether they are able to make appropriate health decisions and are able to follow treatment instructions. This is important because low health literacy is associated with mortality and extra costs to the healthcare system. Our aim was to describe the health literacy levels of British adults using a nationally representative population survey, and show how health literacy levels vary by population characteristics. METHODS: A population based cross-sectional survey including questions from two domains from the Health Literacy Questionnaire™: 1)

[Mental Health Literacy: German version of a modified Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS-DE) - Psychometric evaluation and predictive factors].

Mental health literacy (MHL) is considered a key concept in dealing with mental illness. It encompasses knowledge about illnesses, risk factors, help-seeking behavior, and attitudes toward mental illness. Shame is also associated with these factors. In this study, a modified German version (MHLS-DE) was developed and tested on an online sample (N=533). The psychometric properties of the MHLS-DE and the role of shame as a mediator of MHL were investigated. The MHLS-DE achieved good reliability (Cronbach's χ=0.846) and structural validity. Gender-modulated mediation effects through shame experie

Digital health literacy among university students: a systematic review of global trends, determinants, measurement, and the literacy-to-intervention gap.

INTRODUCTION: University students interact with the complexities of public health knowledge in digital environments. Digital health literacy (DHL), in this regard, is crucial as an upstream skill for ensuring safe, inclusive, and knowledgeable health care engagement among university students where mis-information, algorithm amplification, and AI-based content exist. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review synthesizes global evidence on DHL among university students. It examines measurement approaches, socio-demographic determinants, online health information-seeking behaviours, mental health and we

How health literacy and eHealth literacy influence quality of life in older adults with chronic diseases: a network and path analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite existing research on factors influencing quality of life (QOL) in older adults with chronic diseases, the underlying mechanisms by which health literacy (HL) and e-health literacy (eHL) contribute to QOL improvement remain underexplored. This study aimed to elucidate the complex relationships among HL, eHL, health behaviors, psychosocial factors, and QOL, and to identify the driving pathways of HL and eHL in enhancing QOL. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between March and June 2025 at a tertiary hospital in Xi'an, China. A total of 304 older adults with chro

Effects of Instruction With the Accessible Literacy Learning App on Three Literacy Skills for Children Who Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

PURPOSE: Despite the inestimable importance of literacy skills for children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), many AAC users do not develop even basic literacy skills. The Accessible Literacy Learning (ALL) curriculum is evidence-based; however, little research has investigated the effects of instruction using the ALL app, and no research has examined parent-implemented adapted literacy instruction. METHOD: A single case study with a multiple-baseline across-participants design was used to investigate the effects of instruction using the ALL app, implemented by trained

Health literacy and eHealth literacy and their association with other caring concepts among carers of people with dementia: A descriptive correlational study.

Health literacy (HL) and eHealth literacy (eHL) can facilitate carers of people with dementia (PwD) to search, find, assess and apply information related to dementia-specific issues from different resources. There is a lack of research with regard to HL and eHL among carers of PwD. The aim of this study is to identify the levels of HL and eHL among carers of PwD in Greece and Cyprus and to search for the associations with other caring concepts. This study followed a descriptive correlational design. In total, 174 primary informal carers of PwD, mostly women, over 45 years old and with more tha

The Mental Health Literacy and Prevention Survey (mHELP): a brief measure for assessing gatekeepers' mental health literacy in prevention research.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) is a key target of prevention efforts to help gatekeepers such as teachers and other professionals recognize and respond to mental health problems in young people. To evaluate such mental health prevention initiatives, instruments that capture the multiple components of MHL in a concise and practical way are crucial. However, existing measures often assess only selected aspects of the construct or have not been comprehensively validated. Building on the established conceptualization of MHL, a brief and multidimensional measure suitable for p

Contributions of causal reasoning to early scientific literacy.

Although early causal reasoning has been studied extensively, inconsistency in the tasks used to assess it has clouded our understanding of its structure, development, and relevance to broader developmental outcomes. The current research attempted to bring clarity to these questions by exploring patterns of performance across several commonly used measures of causal reasoning, and their relation to scientific literacy, in a sample of 3- to 5-year-old children from diverse backgrounds (N = 153). A longitudinal confirmatory factor analysis revealed that some measures of causal reasoning (counter

Finding Max's wolves: Literacy socialization in the margins.

For decades, language and literacy scholars working within a sociocultural framework have laboured to bring attention to the strengths of marginalized students in an effort to create more inclusive and equitable learning environments (e.g., Cummins, 2000; Dyson, 1997; González et al., 2005; Heath, 1983). While this work has moved the field forward in invaluable ways, it has not consistently engaged with processes of marginalization as a complex practice, which has produced gaps in our understanding of how we can best address it in research and practice to the benefit of all learners. Rethinking Emergent Literacy in Children With Hearing Loss.

Long-term literacy outcomes for children with hearing loss, particularly those with severe-to-profound deafness who are fitted with cochlear implants (CIs) lag behind those of children with normal hearing (NH). The causes for these long-term deficits are not fully clear, though differences in auditory access between children who use CIs and those with NH may be a partial cause. This paper briefly reviews the emergent literacy model as proposed by Whitehurst and Lonigan (1998). We then examine the development of each of Whitehurst and Lonigan's identified factors in children who use CIs and how
