Atheroembolism to the Breast.

We report the case of a woman presenting with livedo reticularis of the breast who was found to have atheroembolism to the breast following upper extremity percutaneous access. Atheroembolism is the embolization of cholesterol crystals off an atherosclerotic plaque that can occur spontaneously or as a result of vascular intervention. This is a unique presentation of an otherwise well-described complication of vascular catheterization, and we propose that livedo reticularis of the breast can be interpreted as a sign of atheroembolism in the appropriate clinical context.

Cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa sine nodosa.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa, a form of vasculitis affecting the small to medium sized arteries, most commonly presents as tender subcutaneous nodules over the lower legs and feet. Other features include livedo reticularis, skin ulcers and tender indurated plaques. CONCLUSION: We report a 51-year old woman with a primarily livedo reticularis presentation of cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa without a nodular component.

[Anti-cardiolipin antibody in cerebral infarction].

A 28 year old woman with a previous history of labile hypertension, migraine and transitory cerebral ischemia was admitted with cerebral infarction. One month later she developed livedo reticularis and amaurosis fugax, which led to the diagnosis of Sneddon's disease (livedo reticularis, labile hypertension and neurological symptoms) and the anticardiolipin antibody (ACA) syndrome. Treatment with prednisone and phenprocoumon resulted in lowering of ACA-titers, but the symptoms did not subside until acetylsalicylic acid was added.

Heterotopic ossification of small saphenous vein and panniculitis ossificans of chronic venous insufficiency presenting with livedo racemosa.

OBJECTIVES: Livedo racemosa is a reticulate eruption that presents with branched and partially blanchable incomplete rings. Livedo racemosa is distinct from livedo reticularis, a similar condition that presents with a diffuse and symmetrical blanchable eruption. In contrast to livedo reticularis which may be physiological, livedo racemosa is always associated with an underlying pathology. To our knowledge, this is the first report of panniculitis ossificans and heterotopic ossification of small saphenous vein (SSV) presenting with livedo racemosa. METHODS: We present a 70-year-old male referr

[Optic nerve infarction in Sneddon's syndrome].

CLINICAL CASE: We report a case of a 26 year old woman with Raynaud's phenomenon and livedo reticularis 2 years onset, who presented with visual field defects accompanied by hypertension, hematuria, and headache. The examination revealed multiple retinal and optic nerve head infarcts in both eyes. DISCUSSION: Sneddon's syndrome is a vasculitis that produces livedo reticularis, neurological symptoms, and less frequently myocardial, renal and retinal infarction. After reviewing the literature, this is the first case described of Sneddon's syndrome presenting with optic nerve infarction.

Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita: a case report.

Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (CMTC) is a rare cutaneous vascular disorder that was first described in 1922 by Van Lohuizen (1). The clinical presentation is one of persistent cutis marmorata, phlebectasia, telangiectasia, and areas of ulcerations. The disorder shows slow clinical improvement over time. Previously, CMTC has also been described as congenital generalized phlebectasia (2-7), congenital phlebectasia (8), nevus vascularis reticularis (9), congenital livedo reticularis (10), and livedo telangiectatica (11). The following is a case report.

[Mucocutaneous lesions in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus].

The objective was to analyze the prevalence of mucocutaneous lesions in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). During a 3-year period, we analyzed 77 patients with a diagnosis of SLE. The mucocutaneous lesions were classified into specific and non-specific. We defined skin type, sunlight exposure and photoprotection and correlated these lesions with serology and disease activity. Acute specific lesions were found in 67.5% of the patients, subacute lupus in 6.5% and chronic lesions in 26.0%. The most prevalent non-specific lesions were alopecia (59.7%), photosensitivity (57.1%), Rayn

Third generation infantile syphilis--an unusual presentation.

A case of third generation early congenital syphilis with unusual features is reported and discussed. The infant presented with Livedo reticularis and an ulcer on the right forearm since birth; the underlying radius and ulna showed osteomyelitic changes with sequestrum formation and a pathological fracture. The rest of the skeletal system was normal. The blood STS (VDRL) was reactive at 1:64. The child showed no other evidence of congenital syphilis. Livedo reticularis and bony lesions resolved promptly with penicillin therapy, but abnormal movements at the wrist joint persisted. The mother ha

Vascular ulcers in scleroderma.

Seven patients with scleroderma and either livedo reticularis or atrophie blanche lesions had ulcers of the lower extremity. Livedoid vasculitis, periarteritis nodosa, or endarteritis obliterans lesions were associated with the ulcers. Five patients had livedoid vasculitis, one patient had associated lupus panniculitis, and one patient had rheumatoid arthritis. Four patients had elevated ESRs, four had positive antinuclear antibody tests, and two had positive tests for rheumatoid factor. Patients with scleroderma and livedoid vasculitis or livedo reticularis and ulcers should be examined to ru

Antiphospholipid antibody positive Sneddon syndrome: a case report.

Sneddon syndrome may present with neurological findings such as transient ischemic stroke, strokes, seizures and/or headaches. However, a purplish, spider web-like skin finding called livedo reticularis may accompany the skin and precede neurological findings. Sneddon syndrome often affects women. Since it is vasculopathy affecting small and medium vessels, other organ findings may accompany. We present a 44-year-old Sneddon syndrome patient with monoparesis in her left lower extremity, livedo reticularis on her back and legs, and hypertension.

Livedoid vasculopathy.

Livedoid vasculopathy is a painful thrombo-occlusive vascular disorder characterized by spontaneous thrombosis in medium-size arterioles, which causes localized hypoxia and skin ulceration. As livedoid vasculopathy is rare, case reports are the primary means of expanding collective knowledge about its presentation and response to various therapies.

Antiphospholipid syndrome and cutaneous vasoocclusive disorders.

The antiphospholipid syndrome (characterized by the presence of circulating lupus anticoagulants or anticardiolipin antibodies) was first recognized in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but the syndrome can also exist in the absence of SLE. The clinical features include arterial or venous thrombosis, recurrent abortion, neurological problems, and various cutaneous disorders including thrombophlebitis, livedo reticularis, atrophie blanche, leg ulcers, and gangrene. In some cases, antiphospholipid antibodies may play a role with other recognized syndromes characterized by vascula

Cryoglobulinaemia in Egyptian Patients with Extrahepatic Cutaneous Manifestations of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection.

Background. Hepatitis C is a global major health problem with extremely variable extrahepatic manifestations. Mixed cryoglobulinaemia (MC) shows a striking association with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, and it is sometimes asymptomatic. The skin is a frequently involved target organ in MC. Objective. To investigate the prevalence of cryoglobulinaemia in a sample of Egyptian patients with cutaneous manifestations of chronic HCV infection and to correlate its presence with clinical criteria and liver function tests. Methods. One hundred and eighteen patients with skin manifestations of chro

[Livedoid vasculopathy: A case report].

Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is a painful and thrombotic obliterative vascular disorder characterized by spontaneous thrombus formation within skin capillaries or small veins, ultimately leading to localized hypoxia and the development of skin ulcers. LV is a rare condition predominantly affecting young women, with an incidence rate of approximately 1/100 000. Clinically, it manifests as recurrent reticular green spots and painful ulcers on the distal lower extremities, which subsequently heal, leaving behind white and atrophic scars, termed "white atrophy". The skin manifestations of the diseas
