Fishbone penetration leading to pyogenic liver abscess: A case report.

The incidence of pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs) resulting from foreign body ingestion is relatively rare; however, it poses significant risks, necessitating timely diagnosis and intervention. This report presents an unusual case involving a 77-year-old female who developed a PLA following the ingestion of a fishbone. The patient was accurately diagnosed using high-resolution computed tomography-based three-dimensional reconstruction and subsequently underwent successful treatment through laparoscopic incision, drainage, and simultaneous removal of the fishbone.

Percutaneous extraction of metallic foreign body from pyogenic liver abscess.

We report a case of a 35-year-old male who developed a pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) secondary to a foreign body that migrated from the transverse colon into the liver. The mainstay of treatment of PLA requires removal of the foreign body, most frequently performed surgically. Few case reports exist of percutaneous removal. As our patient was hemodynamically stable at time of presentation, he underwent successful percutaneous transhepatic removal of the foreign body, avoiding any need for surgical operation.

Corneal Endotheliitis Associated with a Methicillin Resistant Pyogenic Liver Abscess.

Endotheliitis is the inflammation of the corneal endothelium resulting in edema and subsequent loss of vision. Bacterial causes of corneal inflammation primarily of the epithelium with subsequent, secondary involvement of the endothelium have previously been described. Notably, however, there are no reports of isolated endotheliitis related to a bacterial pathogen. We report, for the first time, a case of corneal endotheliitis associated with a pyogenic liver abscess caused by methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Treatment targeting the underlying source of infection led to visu

Ruptured Pyogenic Liver Abscess with Pneumoperitoneum 19 Years After Pancreatoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND Rupture of a pyogenic liver abscess is rare but serious complication. In patients after pancreatoduodenectomy, there are some conditions causing the development of liver abscesses (e.g., chronic reflux-cholangitis, efferent jejunal loop stasis, stenosis of the biliary anastomosis, and pancreatogenic diabetes). However, the number of published cases of liver abscess after pancreatoduodenectomy is small. CASE REPORT A 42-year-old male was admitted with severe abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice. Nineteen years previously, he had undergone pancreatoduodenectomy and cholecystectomy for

Characteristics and management of pyogenic liver abscess: A European experience.

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) are space-occupying lesions in the liver associated with high morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to review an Italian hospital experience in epidemiological, clinical patterns, and management of PLA.We performed a retrospective, descriptive case series at a single center assessing demographic characteristics, presentation patterns, etiological factors, microbiological etiology, and management for patients treated for PLA between 2000 and 2016.Around 109 patients were identified. The majority of patients presented with fever (73%); right upper abdomin

Cryptogenic pyogenic liver abscess as the herald of colon cancer.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colonic mucosal defects might be a route for bacterial invasion into the portal system, with subsequent hematogenous spread to the liver. We retrospectively investigated the results of colonoscopy and the clinical characteristics of patients with pyogenic liver abscess of colonic origin. METHODS: A total of 230 consecutive patients with pyogenic liver abscess were reviewed between 2003 and 2010. The 230 patients were categorized into three groups (pancreatobiliary [n = 135], cryptogenic [n = 81], and others [n = 14]). Of the 81 cryptogenic patients, 37 (45.7%) underwent co

Acute Budd-Chiari syndrome resulting from a pyogenic liver abscess.

Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare condition resulting from outflow obstruction of the liver. This syndrome due to a pyogenic abscess is rarely documented in the English literature. Here a male patient with acute Budd Chiari syndrome is presented. A 21-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital because of severe right upper quadrant pain, jaundice, hepatomegaly and fever. The examination of liver by computerized tomography and ultrasound revealed a large lesion 120 x l00 mm in size located in the right lobe of liver, which was compressing the inferior vena cava, the right and middle hepati

Culture-Negative Pyogenic Liver Abscess Presenting as Lung Abscess and Empyema Through Transdiaphragmatic Spread.

A woman in her 40s presented with progressive dyspnoea and cough, preceded by anorexia and significant weight loss. Initial chest radiography showed apparent elevation of the right hemidiaphragm with right lower zone opacification, raising concern for thoracic or intra-abdominal malignancy. Laboratory investigations revealed severe normocytic anaemia, leucocytosis, hypoalbuminaemia and elevated alkaline phosphatase. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrated a large subcapsular right hepatic abscess with contiguous transdiaphragmatic extension into the right lower thorax, complicated by lung abscess an

Pyogenic Liver Abscess as a Cause of Sepsis: A Case Report.

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a potentially life-threatening condition that can progress to sepsis if not treated promptly. The condition often presents with non-specific symptoms such as persistent fever and abdominal pain, which can delay diagnosis. Computed tomography plays a crucial role in identifying hepatic abscesses and guiding timely intervention. We report the case of a 54-year-old man with a one-week history of high fever and epigastric pain. Imaging confirmed the presence of a liver abscess, and due to haemodynamic instability, surgical drainage was performed, yielding purulent m

[A Thrombus in the Right Atrium Associated with Pyogenic Liver Abscess].

Hepatic abscesses are divided into bacterial and amoebic types. Although the prognosis of bacterial liver abscesses has improved owing to progress in drainage techniques and antimicrobial agents, poor outcomes remain common. While there have been some reports of amoebic liver abscesses complicated by thrombosis, bacterial liver abscesses and subsequent thrombus in the right atrium are very rare. We herein report the case of an 82-year-old man. He had suffered acute obstructive suppurative cholangitis 10 months previously, and bile culture yielded Enterococcus faecalis. In the present case, a r

A case of Bacteroides pyogenes bacteremia secondary to liver abscess.

Bacteroides pyogenes, a non-spore-forming, anaerobic, gram-negative rod, is a component of the oral flora of animals and has, on occasion, been reported to cause human infection through dog or cat bites. We report the first case of B. pyogenes bacteremia secondary to liver abscess with no history of an animal bite. The microorganism was identified by 16S rRNA sequencing.

Unique characteristics of pyogenic liver abscesses of biliary origin.

BACKGROUND: Pyrogenic liver abscesses (PLA) can be caused by cholangitis associated with hepatolithiasis and cholangitis related to an abnormal bilioenteric communication, such as a hepaticojejunostomy or the presence of indwelling biliary stents. Our aim was to evaluate the clinical characteristics of PLA of biliary origin. METHODS: We compared patients with PLA related to biliary tract disease (PLA-B; n = 125) with patients with PLA not related to biliary tract disease (PLA-NB; n = 444). We also separated the patients with PLA-B into PLA related to biliary tract disease that involved an abn

Pylephlebitis and pyogenic liver abscesses: a complication of hemorrhoidal banding.

Hemorrhoidal banding is a well-established and safe outpatient procedure. Septic complications of hemorrhoidal banding are rare but can be fatal. The first case of pylephlebitis (septic portal vein thrombosis) and pyogenic liver abscess following hemorrhoidal banding in a 49-year-old man with diabetes is reported in the present study. Risk factors, management and the role of prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients are discussed. Caution against hemorrhoidal banding in immunosuppressed patients, including patients with diabetes, is warranted.
