The epidemiology of gonorrhoea in London: a Bayesian spatial modelling approach.

Data obtained from genitourinary medicine clinics through a comprehensive surveillance system were used in a Bayesian mixed-effects Poisson regression model to explore socio-demographic individual and ecological risk factors for gonorrhoea in London, as well as its spatial clustering. The spatial analysis was performed at the Middle-layer Super Output Area level (median population size 7200). A total of 12452 individuals were diagnosed during the 2-year study period (2009-2010). The study confirmed the presence of 'core areas' of high incidence, and identified 'core' high-risk groups, in parti

Preoperative white matter network organization and memory decline after epilepsy surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Risk for memory decline is a common concern for individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) undergoing surgery. Global and local network abnormalities are well documented in TLE. However, it is less known whether network abnormalities predict postsurgical memory decline. The authors examined the role of preoperative global and local white matter network organization and risk of postoperative memory decline in TLE. METHODS: One hundred one individuals with TLE (n = 51 with left TLE and 50 with right TLE) underwent preoperative T1-weighted MRI, diffusion MRI, and neuropsychological

Gamma-Band Activities in Mouse Frontal and Visual Cortex Induced by Coherent Dot Motion.

A key question within systems neuroscience is to understand how the brain encodes spatially and temporally distributed local features and binds these together into one perceptual representation. Previous works in animal and human have shown that changes in neural synchrony occur during the perceptual processing and these changes are distinguished by the emergence of gamma-band oscillations (GBO, 30-80 Hz, centered at 40 Hz). Here, we used the mouse electroencephalogram to investigate how different cortical areas play roles in perceptual processing by assessing their GBO patterns during the vis

Reduced resting-state brain functional network connectivity and poor regional homogeneity in patients with CADASIL.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) manifests principally as a suite of cognitive impairments, particularly in the executive domain. Executive functioning requires the dynamic coordination of neural activity over large-scale networks. It remains unclear whether changes in resting-state brain functional network connectivity and regional homogeneities (ReHos) underly the mechanisms of executive dysfunction evident in CADASIL patients. METHODS: In this study, 22 CADASIL patients and 44 matched healthy controls underwent

Altered topology of structural brain networks in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by tics. Abnormal neuronal circuits in a wide-spread structural and functional network involved in planning, execution and control of motor functions are thought to represent the underlying pathology. We therefore studied changes of structural brain networks in 13 adult GTS patients reconstructed by diffusion tensor imaging and probabilistic tractography. Structural connectivity and network topology were characterized by graph theoretical measures and compared to 13 age-matched controls. In GTS patients, significantl

Localization and quantification of glottal gaps on deep learning segmentation of vocal folds.

The entire glottis has mostly been the focus in the tracking of the vocal folds, both manually and automatically. From a treatment point of view, the various regions of the glottis are of specific interest. The aim of the study was to test if it was possible to supplement an existing convolutional neural network (CNN) with post-network calculations for the localization and quantification of posterior glottal gaps during phonation, usable for vocal fold function analysis of e.g. laryngopharyngeal reflux findings. 30 subjects/videos with insufficient closure in the rear glottal area and 20 norma

Network Reconfiguration Among Cerebellar Visual, and Motor Regions Affects Movement Function in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3.

BACKGROUND: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a rare movement disorder characterized with ataxia. Previous studies on movement disorders show that the whole-brain functional network tends to be more regular, and these reconfigurations correlate with genetic and clinical variables. METHODS: To test whether the brain network in patients with SCA3 follows a similar reconfiguration course to other movement disorders, we recruited 41 patients with SCA3 (mean age = 40.51 ± 12.13 years; 23 male) and 41 age and sex-matched healthy individuals (age = 40.10 ± 11.56 years; 24 male). Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the brain: What is stimulated? - A consensus and critical position paper.

Transcranial (electro)magnetic stimulation (TMS) is currently the method of choice to non-invasively induce neural activity in the human brain. A single transcranial stimulus induces a time-varying electric field in the brain that may evoke action potentials in cortical neurons. The spatial relationship between the locally induced electric field and the stimulated neurons determines axonal depolarization. The induced electric field is influenced by the conductive properties of the tissue compartments and is strongest in the superficial parts of the targeted cortical gyri and underlying white m

The impacts of road traffic on urban air quality in Jinan based GWR and remote sensing.

Traffic congestion and smog are hot topics in recent years. This study analyzes the impacts of road traffic characteristic parameters on urban air quality quantitatively based on aerosol optical thickness (AOD) and geographical weighted regression (GWR) models, including the road network density, road area occupancy, intersection number, and bus network density as main factors. There are some major research findings. Firstly, there exists a strong positive correlation between the peak congestion delay index (PCDI) and air quality, the correlation has R2 values of up to 0.4962 (R 0.70). Secondl

An enhanced turbulent flow of water-based optimization for optimal power flow of power system integrated wind turbine and solar photovoltaic generators.

This paper uses enhanced turbulent flow in water-based optimization (TFWO), specifically ETFWO, to achieve optimal power flow (OPF) in electrical networks that use both solar photovoltaic (PV) units and wind turbines (WTs). ETFWO is an enhanced TFWO that alters the TFWO structure through the promotion of communication and collaboration. Individuals in the population now interact with each other more often, which makes it possible to search more accurately in the search area while ignoring local optimal solutions. Probabilistic models and real-time data on wind speed and solar irradiance are us

Spindle-Like Zinc Silicate Nanoparticles Accelerating Innervated and Vascularized Skin Burn Wound Healing.

The treatment of severe burn injuries is a crucial challenge in skin tissue engineering. Severe burns are always accompanied with large-area neurovascular networks damage, leading to the lack of excitation functions and difficulty in self-healing. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop biomaterials which can not only promote wound healing but also simultaneously reconstruct cutaneous neurovascular networks. In this study, Zn2 SiO4 (ZS) nanoparticles-incorporated bioactive nanofibrous scaffolds are designed for innervated and vascularized skin burn wound healing. ZS nanoparticles with

Differential links in 16p11.2 deletion carriers reveal aberrant connections between large-scale networks.

Qualitatively different topographical patterns of connections are thought to underlie individual differences in thought and behavior, particularly at heteromodal association areas. As such, we hypothesized that connections unique to 16p11.2 deletion carriers compared to controls, rather than hyper- or hypo-connectivity, would serve as a better model to explain the cognitive and behavioral changes observed in individuals carrying this autism-risk copy number variation. Using a spatially-unbiased, data-driven approach we found that differential links clustered non-uniformly across the cortex-par

Increased default mode network connectivity and increased regional homogeneity in migraineurs without aura.

BACKGROUND: The precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex, which has been associated with pain sensitivity, plays a pivotal role in the default mode network. However, information regarding migraine-related alterations in resting-state brain functional connectivity in the default mode network and in local regional spontaneous neuronal activity is not adequate. METHODS: This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to acquire resting-state scans in 22 migraineurs without aura and in 22 healthy matched controls. Independent component analysis, a data-driven method, was used to calculate the r

The representation of voluntary and reflexive fast eye movements in the macaque lateral intraparietal area.

The macaque lateral intraparietal area (LIP) is known for its role in visually guided saccades as well as in higher cognitive functions. However, its contribution to more basic visuomotor processes remains unclear. Here, we investigated whether neural activity in area LIP is also related to involuntary reflexive eye movements, specifically the fast-phases of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN). To address this question, we compared spiking activity and local field potentials (LFPs) in area LIP of two male macaque monkeys during visually guided saccades and during kinematically similar OKN fast-phases.

Pregnancy leads to changes in the brain functional network: a connectome analysis.

Pregnancy leads to long-lasting changes in human brain structure; however, little is known regarding alterations in the topological organization of functional networks. In this study, we investigated the effect of pregnancy on human brain function networks. Resting-state fMRI data was collected from eighteen primiparous mothers and twenty-four nulliparous control women of similar age, education level and body mass index (BMI). The functional brain network and topological properties were calculated by using GRETNA toolbox. The demographic data differences between two groups were computed by the

Connectivity modulations induced by reach&grasp movements: a multidimensional approach.

Reach&grasp requires highly coordinated activation of different brain areas. We investigated whether reach&grasp kinematics is associated to EEG-based networks changes. We enrolled 10 healthy subjects. We analyzed the reach&grasp kinematics of 15 reach&grasp movements performed with each upper limb. Simultaneously, we obtained a 64-channel EEG, synchronized with the reach&grasp movement time points. We elaborated EEG signals with EEGLAB 12 in order to obtain event related synchronization/desynchronization (ERS/ERD) and lagged linear coherence between Brodmann areas. Finally, we evaluated netwo
