A 15-year-old female maltese was referred to us because of a 3-month history of ataxia, circling, and acute blindness. A mass was noted in the brainstem on brain magnetic resonance images. A cerebellar herniation was also detected on T1-weighted sagittal images. The lateral, third and fourth ventricles and central canal of the cervical spinal cord were enlarged. Gonadal dysfunction, the most frequent endocrine complication in both sexes after autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) could increase bone loss and sarcopenia, a disease characterized by reduced muscle strength and mass. BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is the most common brain tumor occurring in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). After diagnosis of PCNSL, the median survival time is 2-5 months with treatment with whole brain irradiation (WBI).
METHODS: Four (of approximately 40) patients with AIDS and PCNSL seen by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Neuro-Oncology service were treated with multimodal therapy, including WBI with hydroxyurea, followed by 3 cycles of procarbazine/lomustine/vincristine (PCV) chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an aggressive neoplasm in dogs, and in most instances, the disease is localized, but not amenable to surgical removal, or is disseminated. Affected patients usually die within 6 months. There have been no prospective studies to determine efficacy of single-agent chemotherapy in dogs with HS.
HYPOTHESIS: Single-agent CCNU [1-(2-chloroethyl)3-cyclohexyl-1-nitrosourea; lomustine] has antitumor activity against HS in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Histiocytic sarcoma is an aggressive neoplasm of dendritic cells that carries a grave prognosis. The efficacy of chemotherapy against this disease is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of 1-(2-chloroethyl)-3-cyclohexyl-1-nitrosourea (CCNU) in dogs with incompletely resected or metastatic histiocytic sarcoma, to describe the clinical characteristics of these dogs, and to identify factors affecting prognosis.
HYPOTHESIS: Our hypothesis is that CCNU has activity against canine histiocytic sarcoma and can improve survival in dogs with advanced disease.
