(BACKGROUND). To evaluate urinary symptoms, the International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS), which queries about frequency of symptoms, has been recently used in a clinical setting. However, there are men who are not satisfied with their voiding conditions in spite of a low symptom score. In such cases, their dissatisfaction may not be appropriately expressed by querying about frequency of the symptoms alone. We investigated whether the degree or the frequency of the obstructive symptoms correlated with the symptom-related problems. (METHODS). We analyzed obstructive symptoms in 739 males 40

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review synthesizes the recent literature on lower urinary tract symptoms in pediatric patients with congenital conditions. We will discuss emerging insights from multiple studies on pathophysiology, prevalence, clinical impact, management strategies, and long-term outcomes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Surgical advancements have increased early continence rates to 80% in exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC), but attrition of continence remains a challenge. Studies have shown 40% of males with PUV and 80% of patients with EEC report moderate or severe LUTS which significantly impact

Lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) is prevalent in aging men. It is characterized by urinary symptoms such as weak stream and more frequent urination, and is linked to a variety of prostate and urethral pathologies. While the leading medical therapies for male LUTD aim to reduce the tone and volume of the prostate and urethra, no current therapies target two prominent emerging mechanisms of male LUTD: prostate inflammation and fibrosis. LUTD arises and progresses over decades of a man's life, making it difficult to pinpoint disease mechanisms. Non-human research models, including mice, hav

Background and objective Since early 2020, the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has turned into a global healthcare concern. The usual clinical presentation of COVID-19 infection includes myalgia, headache associated with pyrexia, and sore throat. Our study aimed to assess the severity of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in COVID-19 patients and determine its correlation with the prognosis of the disease. Methods We conducted an observational study in the COVID-19 care unit at a tertiary care teaching center in Rajasthan on patients diagnosed as COVID-19-positive. The overactive bl

OBJECTIVE: Uterine fibroids are often associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), the exact prevalence of which has been underexplored. Our main objective was to evaluate the effect of surgical treatment of fibroids on LUTS. Our secondary objectives were to assess the prevalence of LUTS in women undergoing fibroid surgery and to analyze the relationship between the characteristics of fibroids and the severity of symptoms.
METHODS: This was a prospective study of women conducted between 2019 and 2021. The main endpoint was the change in the total UDI-6, IIQ7, ICIQ-SF and CONTILIFE sco

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review explores the subject of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in young men.
RECENT FINDINGS: Young men (aged 39 or younger) can be affected by a variety of conditions that can cause LUTS. Approximately half of young men report LUTS. Storage or "irritative" voiding symptoms are nearly twice as common as "obstructive" symptoms in young men. Infectious or inflammatory causes such as prostatitis are the most common cause of LUTS in this age group, while other etiologies include urethral strictures, primary bladder neck obstruction, as well as neurogenic and non-neurog

A 41-year-old man presented with a 5-month history of bothersome urinary urgency and frequency. He sustained a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen 15 months prior to presentation. Digital rectal examination revealed a metallic foreign body palpable within the right lobe of the prostate, which was suggestive of a retained bullet fragment within the prostate gland. Cystourethroscopy confirmed a bullet fragment lodged within the right lateral aspect of the prostatic urethra. X-ray of the pelvis illustrated 2 radiopaque foreign bodies projecting at the level of the pubis. The patient deferred surgi

OBJECTIVES: Urinary tract involvement is a seldom-reported manifestation of SSc that could compromise patients' quality of life. This study compares lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in SSc patients and in healthy subjects and their association with clinical and diagnostic parameters.
METHODS: LUTS were assessed through self-reported questionnaires in 42 SSc patients and 50 matched healthy subjects. Statistical analyses were performed to explore LUTS in the two populations and their association with SSc variables, including nailfold videocapillaroscopy patterns, SSc-related antibodies and D

Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is the most prevalent form of prostatitis. It is characterized by pelvic pain, voiding symptoms, and ejaculatory symptoms in the absence of bacterial infection. This can be a difficult condition to treat. Many etiologies for CPPS have been proposed including immunologic, neurologic, endocrine, and psychological factors. This article examines a potentially correctable condition that may lead to CPPS, ejaculatory duct obstruction (EDO). EDO is easily correctable with minor surgery. In patients with symptoms of CPPS with associated ejaculatory pain, the diagnos

There is ample evidence from many epidemiological studies that lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and sexual dysfunction are strongly linked, independently of age and comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia and coronary heart disease. However, a causal link between both conditions is not yet established. Four pathophysiological mechanisms currently support the relationship between LUTS and erectile dysfunction (ED): (i) The nitric oxide synthase (NOS)/NO theory; there is a reduction in NOS-containing nerves in the prostate and bladder/urethra in patients with bladder outle

Female lower urinary tract symptoms are nonspecific, and a thorough clinical evaluation is required to establish the correct diagnosis. Such evaluation should consist of a structured micturition history or questionnaire, physical examination with full bladder, micturition diary, pad test and urodynamic evaluation. The urodynamic evaluation should consist at least of cystometry, detrusor pressure/uroflow study, simple ('free') uroflowmetry, assessment of the relative contribution of urethral hypermobility and intrinsic sphincter deficiency, and estimation of postvoid residual urine by ultrasoun

BACKGROUND: The association of pelvic organ prolapse with overactive bladder and other lower urinary tract symptoms, and the natural history of those symptoms are not well characterized. Previous cross-sectional studies demonstrated conflicting relationships between prolapse and lower urinary tract symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: This study primarily aimed to determine the baseline association between lower urinary tract symptoms and prolapse and to assess longitudinal differences in symptoms over 12 months in women with and without prolapse. Secondary aims were to explore associations between lower uri

PURPOSE: Bladder diaries are a key source of information about lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS); however, many patients do not complete them as instructed. Questionnaire-based patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are another option for reporting LUTS but may have recall bias. We assessed the strength of the associations between PROMs and a 3-day bladder diary.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Symptomatic adults from 6 tertiary care sites completed a 3-day paper bladder diary and 3-, 7-, and 30-day electronic PROMs. We assessed the linear associations between mapped pairs of diary variables and

Posttransplant nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) mostly remains unexplained. Microvascular injury due to antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) is suspected, but lack of donor specific antibody (DSA) testing makes it difficult to prove. Centered around a 1-year period of routine DSA testing, concomitant protocol, and indicated posttransplant liver biopsies (LB), recipients with NRH (n = 18) were compared with a matched control group (n = 36). All index, previous, and subsequent LB were reviewed. Both groups were similar in terms of demographics, timing of index LB, and DSA. In the index LB, th

OBJECTIVES: To investigate lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and voiding function in a cohort of hyperthyroid women. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance has been thought to cause LUTS in hyperthyroidism.
METHODS: Between January 2008 and December 2008, 65 newly diagnosed, untreated female hyperthyroid patients were enrolled in this study. Another 62 age-matched healthy women were enrolled as a control group. Demographics, LUTS, urinary flow rates, hyperthyroid symptoms, and serum levels of thyroid hormones were recorded before and after the medical treatment for hyperthyroidism.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the mismatch between functional bladder capacity and nocturnal urine production, and to study the pathophysiology of an increased nocturnal urine production in older patients with urinary incontinence.
METHODS: The present prospective observational study included adults aged ≥65 years with urinary incontinence. Participants completed questionnaires, frequency volume charts and renal function profiles. The nocturnal lower urinary tract symptom index was defined as nocturnal urine output/maximum voided volume; the nocturnal polyuria index as nocturnal/24 h urine output.

We aimed to investigate the role of urinary bladder shape which may potentially change with advancing age, increased waist circumference, pelvic ischemia, and loosening of the urachus on bladder emptying and UFR. We retrospectively investigated the medical records of 76 men. The patients were divided into two groups according to bladder shapes in MRI scan (cone and spheric shapes). There was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of IPSS, Qmax, Qave, and waist circumference. A positive correlation has been demonstrated between mean peak urinary flow rate measured with UFM and

Patients very often consult for lower urinary tract symptoms, that do not necessarily equate to common cystitis. When urinary leucocytes and nitrites are absent, the urinary strip has a very good negative predictive value and makes the diagnosis of a lower urinary tract infection very unlikely. One then has to search for other diagnoses and to clarify the nature of the symptoms, irritating or obstructive ones, their duration and to correlate them to the patient's age and gender. In sexually active young patients, infectious diseases predominate, such as uretritis or vaginitis, while, with age,
