Leg paralysis after AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination diagnosed as neuralgic amyotrophy of the lumbosacral plexus: a case report.

The ongoing global administration of vaccines for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) means that increasing numbers of patients are likely to present with post-vaccination complications. We describe the first reported case of neuralgic amyotrophy (NA) involving the lumbosacral plexus occurring after AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination. The patient presented with acute-onset leg paralysis following administration of the vaccine. Based on the clinical, electrodiagnostic, and radiologic findings, the patient was diagnosed with post-vaccination NA. We speculate that the COVID-19 vaccine elicited an i

3D color-rendered MR neurography heatmaps in visualizing normal lumbosacral (LS) plexus and increasing conspicuity of LS plexopathy.

PURPOSE: To determine whether color-rendered 3D MR neurography (MRN) images (heatmaps) improve diagnostic accuracy, reader confidence levels, and time savings to assess LS plexus lesions compared to the conventional grayscale images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study included adults of all genders with randomly chosen MRNs of LS plexus and known reference standards of normal or neuropathy (plexopathy and radiculopathy). Heatmaps were constructed using 3D MRN STIR images and color rendered with higher intensity to yellow and lower intensity to darker-red colors in 1-2 min on avera

Twelfth Rib Length as a Predictor of Anatomic Variations in the Lumbosacral Plexus Associated With Atypical Radiculopathy in Lumbar Disc Herniation.

STUDY DESIGN: A combined clinical and cadaveric observational study. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether anatomic variations in the lumbosacral plexus (LSP) are associated with diagnostic discrepancies in lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and to corroborate clinical findings with anatomic evidence. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: LDH is typically diagnosed based on clinical neurological symptoms and the level of the compressed spinal nerve root (the responsible lesion) identified by magnetic resonance imaging. However, in some patients, radiculopathy symptoms do not always align with the responsible l

Surgical and oncologic outcomes in dogs with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours arising from the brachial or lumbosacral plexus.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNST) of a plexus nerve or nerve root cause significant morbidity and present a treatment challenge. The surgical approach can be complex and information is lacking on outcomes. The objective of this study was to describe surgical complication rates and oncologic outcomes for canine MPNST of the brachial or lumbosacral plexus. Dogs treated for a naïve MPNST with amputation/hemipelvectomy with or without a laminectomy were retrospectively analysed. Oncologic outcomes were disease free interval (DFI), overall survival (OS), and 1- and 2-year survival r

The effect of severing a normal S1 nerve root to use for reconstruction of an avulsed contralateral lumbosacral plexus: a pilot study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using the intact S1 nerve root as a donor nerve to repair an avulsion of the contralateral lumbosacral plexus. Two cohorts of patients were recruited. In cohort 1, the L4-S4 nerve roots of 15 patients with a unilateral fracture of the sacrum and sacral nerve injury were stimulated during surgery to establish the precise functional distribution of the S1 nerve root and its proportional contribution to individual muscles. In cohort 2, the contralateral uninjured S1 nerve root of six patients with a unilateral lumbosacral plexus avulsion wa

MRI investigation of radiating pain in the lower limbs: value of an additional sequence dedicated to the lumbosacral plexus and pelvic girdle.

OBJECTIVE: In some cases, sciatica-like symptoms radiating through the buttock, anterior thigh, or leg result from spinal root compression in an extraspinal location or from injury to the pelvic girdle. It has been suggested that adding a coronal STIR sequence dedicated to the lumbosacral plexus and pelvis to the routine MRI protocol can provide a good depiction of disorders of this type. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred nine patients with sciatica-like symptoms of suspected lumbar origin were included in the study. Disorders responsible for symptoms involving extraspinal compression of the

Neuromuscular choristoma of the sciatic nerve and lumbosacral plexus: an association with nerve-territory undergrowth in the pelvis affecting soft tissue and bone.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular choristomas (NMC) are rare congenital lesions with differentiated muscle found within peripheral nerves. Patients often present with progressive neuropathy, undergrowth of the affected limb, and limb length discrepancy. In the sciatic nerve (the most common location of NMC), this may lead to specific manifestations in the distal limb, including progressive neuropathy, a shortened atrophic limb and a cavus foot. We hypothesized that the presence of NMC of the sciatic nerve (proximal to the sciatic notch) extending to the lumbosacral plexus could lead to abnormalities i

Can DTI Evaluate Lumbosacral Plexus Nerve Integrity, and What can this Tell us About Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction? A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Peripheral neuropathy affecting the lumbosacral plexus (LSP) is a potential contributor to "idiopathic" lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD), yet objective methods to assess peripheral nerve integrity in vivo remain limited. This narrative review evaluates the feasibility of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in assessing LSP microstructural integrity and explores what this may tell us about lower urinary tract dysfunction. RECENT FINDINGS: Twelve studies met inclusion criteria from 91 screened abstracts. All studies successfully imaged and quantified sacral nerve microstruct
