Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a transboundary viral disease of cattle caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), resulting in substantial economic losses. Control of the disease relies primarily on live attenuated vaccines, making accurate potency assessment essential to ensure protective efficacy. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) has emerged as a rapid and sensitive method for viral detection and quantification. In this study, ten commercial batches of live attenuated LSDV vaccines were evaluated using qPCR, and the molecular titers were compared with conventional tissue culture titration and

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), a double-stranded DNA virus from the Capripoxvirus genus, primarily affects Bos indicus, Bos taurus breeds, and water buffalo. Arthropod vectors, including mosquitoes and biting flies, are the main LSDV transmitters. Although LSDV is not zoonotic, this study unexpectedly detected LSDV reads in the upper respiratory tract microbiome of humans from rural and urban areas in Maharashtra, India. Nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swab samples collected for SARS-CoV-2 surveillance underwent whole-genome metagenomics sequencing, revealing LSDV reads in 25% of samples. S

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a vector-transmitted viral disease that affects cattle and water buffaloes. The LSD virus (LSDV) is a double-stranded DNA virus and is a member of the Poxviridae family. The first documented cases of LSD were reported in Zambia in 1929, from which it spread to other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as to countries in Europe and Asia. The present study documents the first occurrence of LSD in the North African region. Different samples were collected from infected cattle in Algeria and Tunisia, and morbidity data were recorded. To confirm the occurrence of LS

To implement effective lumpy skin disease (LSD) control measures, such as timely vaccination, particularly in calves and serological monitoring, it is necessary to evaluate immune response after vaccination, both in adult cattle and in their calves. The aim of this study was to evaluate passive immunity transfer and duration of maternal antibodies against lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) in calves born to vaccinated cows by two different serological methods. The longitudinal study was carried out on two farms in Serbia where no cases were reported during LSD outbreak in 2016. Fifteen cows on ea

Lumpy skin disease and Rift Valley fever are two high-priority livestock diseases which have the potential to spread into previously free regions through animal movement and/or vectors, as well as intentional release by bioterrorists. Since the distribution range of both diseases is similar in Africa, it makes sense to use a bivalent vaccine to control them. This may lead to the more consistent and sustainable use of vaccination against Rift Valley fever through a more cost-effective vaccine. In this study, a recombinant lumpy skin disease virus was constructed in which the thymidine kinase ge

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is responsible for causing severe economic losses to cattle farmers throughout Africa, the Middle East, and more recently, South-Eastern Europe and Russia. It belongs to the Capripoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family, with closely related sheeppox and goatpox viruses. Like other poxviruses, the viral genome codes for a number of genes with putative immunomodulatory capabilities. Current vaccines for protecting cattle against lumpy skin disease (LSD) based on live-attenuated strains of field isolates passaged by cell culture, resulting in random mutations. Alth

The safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of three commercially available vaccines against lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle have been evaluated using a combination of vaccine challenge experiments and the monitoring of immune responses in vaccinated animals in the field. The three vaccines evaluated in the study included two locally produced (Ethiopian) vaccines (lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) Neethling and Kenyan sheep and goat pox (KSGP) O-180 strain vaccines) and a Gorgan goat pox (GTP) vaccine manufactured by Jordan Bio-Industries Centre (JOVAC). The latter vaccine was evaluated for the f

The control of lumpy skin disease (LSD) is often hampered by adverse effects associated with currently available live attenuated vaccines (LAVs). This preliminary study was therefore designed to determine the immune responses in dairy cattle immunized with either an inactivated LSD vaccine (derived from a local strain) or a commercial LAV. Specifically, five cattle received an inactivated vaccine, and five received a commercial LAV. Humoral immunity was assessed: ELISA titers persisted for over six months in both groups. Furthermore, the virus neutralization test showed no statistical differen

Vaccination using live attenuated vaccines (LAVs) is considered the most effective method for control of lumpy skin disease (LSD). However, this method is limited by safety concerns, with reports of adverse reactions following vaccination. This study evaluates A27L and L1R which are essential proteins for virus attachment and membrane fusion as recombinant sub-unit vaccines against LSD. These proteins were recombinantly expressed in Escherichia coli and purified using affinity chromatography. Purified proteins were formulated individually (A27L or L1R) and in combination (A27L and L1R) with 10

Lumpy skin disease (LSD), a vector-borne viral disease of cattle, re-emerged in Italy in June 2025 after six years of absence in Europe, affecting the island of Sardinia, which had previously been disease-free. The insular setting, the predominance of extensive cattle farming systems, and the rapid implementation of control measures provided a unique opportunity to investigate epidemic dynamics and evaluate vaccination effectiveness under field conditions. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological pattern of the first epidemic season (June-October 2025), estimate key transmission parame

BACKGROUND: Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is an increasingly prevalent pathogen of significant global concern. It is indigenous to Africa and the Middle East and has recently spread to Europe and Asia. Vaccine-based control programs represent the most effective preventive strategy for disease management. The extraordinary worldwide dissemination of the virus necessitates establishing effective, scalable vaccine production systems to meet both local and global vaccine demand. Vaccine manufacturing has depended on LSDV multiplication in adherent cell cultures, thus constraining large-scale man

Knowledge of the dynamic of clinical infections with Asian strains of LSD virus (LSDV) in Bos indicus is scarce. This study reports on the clinical, serological and molecular features of natural infections with LSDV in B. indicus during the first outbreak in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 2023. Eleven Peranakan ongole (PO) breed cattle with multiple skin lumps were included in the study. Data was collected on lump progression, rectal temperature, anorexia, lameness and oedema, along with serum samples, on five sampling points at four days intervals. Seroconversion was detected using an ELISA, viral DN

This study was conducted in Samsun Province of Turkey to investigate the serological status of domesticated water buffaloes for both Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD). Serum was collected from a total of 272 water buffaloes from different age groups and both genders; of the total, 48.1% had been vaccinated against LSD with heterologous sheep-goat pox vaccine. The serum samples were individually assessed by using a commercial ID screen enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA) to detect neutralizing antibodies against both CCHF virus and LSD virus. All 272 buf

A simple method to estimate the size of the vaccine bank needed to control an epidemic of an exotic infectious disease in case of introduction into a country is presented. The method was applied to the case of a Lumpy Skin disease (LSD) epidemic in France. The size of the stock of vaccines needed was calculated based on a series of simple equations that use some trigonometric functions and take into account the spread of the disease, the time required to obtain good vaccination coverage and the cattle density in the affected region. Assuming a 7-weeks period to vaccinate all the animals and a

The use of effective vaccines is among the most important strategies for the prevention and progressive control of transboundary infectious animal diseases. However, the use of vaccine is often impeded by the cost, a lack of cold chains and other factors. In resource-limited countries in Africa, one approach to improve coverage and reduce cost is to vaccinate against multiple diseases using combined vaccines. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate a combined vaccine for the prevention and control of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) and Rift Val

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), a Capripoxvirus, is of economic importance in the cattle industry and is controlled by vaccination. A comparison was made of the host response to the two LSDV vaccines Neethling and Herbivac LS, with reference to the well-studied Orthopoxvirus, modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA), in a mouse model. Because the vaccines differ at the superoxide dismutase homologue (SOD) gene locus, recombinant SOD knock-out and knock-in nLSDV vaccines were constructed and all four vaccines were tested for the induction and inhibition of apoptosis. The SOD homologue was associated bot

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) caused by the Capripoxvirus LSD virus which infects cattle, leading to a serious disease characterized by fever and the eruption of skin nodules all over the surface of the body. Our understanding of the pathogenesis of this disease is still incomplete, particularly the immunopathological alterations occurring in the skin nodules of infected animals. Therefore, we collected skin nodules from naturally infected cattle with different forms of the disease, both in the early stage of clinical infection and after disease progression. The skin samples were examined both hist

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an emerging viral disease affecting cattle and water buffalo, leading to significant socioeconomic impacts. In Southeast Asia, the first LSD outbreak was reported in Vietnam in 2020, and the disease has continued to expand to neighboring countries, including Thailand. Recently, LSD has been reported in wildlife such as yaks and giraffes. Despite being recognized for nearly a century, the mechanisms of lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) transmission remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the potential role of Aedes albopictus in LSDV transmission. Acc

INTRODUCTION: Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV), a member of the genus Capripoxvirus within the family Poxviridae, is an economically important transboundary viral pathogen affecting cattle and water buffalo. The disease causes severe production losses through decreased milk yield, infertility, hide damage, reduced growth performance, and occasional mortality. The rapid geographic spread of LSDV, together with its vectorborne transmission and emerging recombinant strains, has intensified the need for improved understanding of viral pathogenesis, host immune responses, and effective prevention st
