Lung herniation: an uncommon presentation of Poland's syndrome in a neonate at birth.

A term male infant was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit with an asymmetric chest wall and a herniating mass through the left fourth intercostal space. While crying, the left fourth intercostal space revealed a mass which herniated on expiration and receded on inspiration. On auscultation, the heart sounds were audible on the right side of the chest. Systemic examination was otherwise unremarkable. A roentgenogram of the chest revealed dextrocardia and hyperlucent left lung fields. Echocardiogram showed dextrocardia with a structurally normal heart. A clinical diagnosis of Poland's

A Pulmonary Sequestered Segment with an Aberrant Pulmonary Arterial Supply: A Case of Unique Anomaly.

We presented a rare case of a 64-year-old man with a combined anomaly of the bronchus and pulmonary artery that was detected incidentally. Computed tomography showed a hyperlucent, aerated sequestered segment of the right lower lung with an independent ectopic bronchus, which had no connection to the other airway. The affected segment was supplied by its own aberrant pulmonary artery branch from the right pulmonary trunk. This anomaly cannot be classified with any of the previously reported anomalies.

Diagnostic role of magnetic resonance angiography in Swyer James syndrome: Case series of two cases.

Swyer James syndrome is a rare syndrome which occurs due to viral illness in early childhood. The post infective obliterative bronchiolitis results in arrest of lung growth and alveolarization with reduced vascularity resulting in classical radiological features. We describe two cases of patients fulfilling all the criteria of the syndrome - 1) Unilateral hyperlucent small lung in chest radiograph with air trapping on expiration, small ipsilateral hila and pulmonary artery. 2) Diffuse decrease in attenuation of lung parenchyma with bronchiectasis and reduction in vascularity. 3) Unilateral pru

Ventricular septal defect and Swyer-James (Macleod's) syndrome together: a case report.

Swyer-James (MacLeod's) syndrome is a rare entity that is characterized by the hyperlucent appearance of one or more lobes of one lung, diminished ipsilateral hilar shadow and hardly visible arterial structure on chest radiography. Ventricular septal defect is the most common childhood congenital heart defect and, if left untreated, this will result to irreversible pulmonary hypertension, reversing of the shunt and Eisenmenger's syndrome. In this case report, we describe a 19-year-old female patient who had diagnosis of VSD and Swyer-James syndrome at the same time.

Prognostic value of a composite physiologic index developed by adding bronchial and hyperlucent volumes quantified via artificial intelligence technology.

BACKGROUND: The composite physiologic index (CPI) was developed to estimate the extent of interstitial lung disease (ILD) in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients based on pulmonary function tests (PFTs). The CALIPER-revised version of the CPI (CALIPER-CPI) was also developed to estimate the volume fraction of ILD measured by CALIPER, an automated quantitative CT postprocessing software. Recently, artificial intelligence-based quantitative CT image analysis software (AIQCT), which can be used to quantify the bronchial volume separately from the ILD volume, was developed and validated in

Clinical, physiologic, and roentgenographic changes after pneumonectomy in a boy with Macleod/Swyer-James syndrome and bronchiectasis.

Macleod/Swyer-James syndrome is an uncommon and complex disease characterized by roentgenographic hyperlucency of one lung or lobe due to loss of the pulmonary vascular structure and to alveolar overdistension. This syndrome seems to be an acquired disease that follows viral bronchiolitis and pneumonitis in childhood. It must be differentiated from many other causes of unilateral lung "transradiancy" on the chest roentgenogram, such as those related to congenital bronchial and/or vascular abnormalities. We here describe an 11-year-old patient with Macleod/Swyer-James syndrome and bronchiectasi

[Congenital bronchomalacia of left main bronchus combined with lobar emphysema, pectus excavatum and right aortic arch--a case report].

One-year-old girl was admitted because of recurrent pneumonia and pectus excavatum. Chest X-ray showed hyperlucency at the upper lung field and infiltrated shadow at the lower field of the left lung. Bronchoscopy and bronchograms revealed marked collapse in a long segment of the left main bronchus during expiration. CT scan showed an emphysematous change and a giant bulla of left lung. Angiogram showed right aortic arch. Sternoturnover was performed at 5 years of age for pectus excavatum. After 10 months, left pneumonectomy was performed for bronchomalacia and lobar emphysema. Successful Management of Patient with Treatment Resistant Schizophrenia and Swyer-James-Macleod Syndrome with Clozapine.

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare disorder characterized by infective bronchiolitis. It typically presents with a history of recurrent chest infections during childhood. Cardinal sign of the disease includes the hyperlucency of the lung fields. Till date, only a few cases have been reported of this syndrome. We report a very unusual case of SJMS along with comorbid schizophrenia in a 20-year-old female and the successful management using clozapine.

Radiographic recognition of pneumothorax in the intensive care unit.

Recognizing pneumothorax and hydropneumothorax on chest x-rays of supine ICU patients requires attention to areas other than the lung apex. Pleural air in a supine patient collects in the anterior costophrenic sulcus, producing hyperlucency over the upper abdominal quadrants, and the deep costophrenic sulcus sign. Hydropneumothorax may be recognized when a sharp pleural line is bordered by increased opacity within the pleural space. The presence of pneumothorax and hydropneumothorax can be confirmed by decubitus or upright chest x-rays.

Swyer-James syndrome with myocardial bridge: a case report.

Swyer-James syndrome is an uncommon disease with unknown aetiology. It is generally discovered on a chest radiograph as increased translucency involving one hemithorax because of diminished vascular markings. Pulmonary vascularization on the affected side is greatly reduced leading to radiological translucency. Myocardial bridging describes an angiographic entity, which is any degree of systolic narrowing of a coronary artery observed in at least one angiographic projection. It is a congenital anomaly of the coronary artery and may occur in 5-12% of the human population. We report a patient su

Bronchial cartilage dysplasia with multifocal lobar bullous emphysema and lung torsions in a pup.

Bronchial cartilage dysplasia is believed to have caused lobar bullous emphysema in a 5-month-old Chow Chow that had exercise intolerance, progressive dyspnea, and episodic cough. Radiography of the thorax revealed hyperlucency of the left hemithorax, displacement of the mediastinum and heart to the right, and flattening of the diaphragm. The pup died shortly after the radiographs were obtained. Necropsy revealed massive hyperinflation with 180 degrees torsion of the cranial portion of the left cranial lung lobe, and hyperinflation with less than 180 degrees torsion of the right accessory lung

[A case of surgical treatment of Swyer-James syndrome].

Swyer-James syndrome was usually diagnosed on the past history and the radiologic features, and almost all the cases were followed by the conservative therapy. Therefore, the examination of the pathologic features was rare. We recently experienced a patient with Swyer-James syndrome, who had a history of respiratory infection from his childhood onward and whose chest radiograph revealed hyperlucency of the right lower lung field. A standard right middle and lower lobectomy was performed. Histological examination of the resected specimens revealed hypoplasia of alveoli and pulmonary artery.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome with an anomalous origin of coronary artery: Case report.

Swyer-James (Macleod) syndrome was first defined in the 1950s by Swyer, James and Macleod in patients with unilateral hyperlucent lungs. Coronary artery anomalies are congenital anomalies that affect a small part of the population. They constitute about 1-2% of congenital heart diseases. The incidence of a left coronary artery arising from the right coronary sinus Valsalva has been reported as 0.017%, and 1.3% among coronary artery anomalies. We hereby present this case since the case was diagnosed in adult age and was accompanied by a rare congenital heart disease.
