Protective effect of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides against cadmium-induced testicular toxicity in male mice.

The present study was performed to determine whether Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) would protect mice against cadmium (Cd)-induced testicular toxicity. Seventy-two male mice were randomly divided into six groups with twelve mice per group. Four groups were administered orally with cadmium chloride (5.0 mg per kg body weight) for 35 days and treated in combination with LBPs (0, 10.0, 33.3 or 100 mg kg-1) from one week before exposure to Cd until the end of the experiment. The other two groups were administered orally with vehicle or LBP (100 mg kg-1) only. Pretreatment with LBP amelior

Effect of Lycium barbarum (Wolfberry) on alleviating axonal degeneration after partial optic nerve transection.

Our previous results showed that the polysaccharides extracted from Lycium barbarum (LBP) could delay secondary degeneration of retinal ganglion cell bodies and improve the function of the retinas after partial optic nerve transection (PONT). Although the common degeneration mechanisms were believed to be shared by both neuronal bodies and axons, recently published data from slow Wallerian degeneration mutant (Wld(s)) mice supported the divergence in the mechanisms of them. Therefore, we want to determine if LBP could also delay the degeneration of axons after PONT. Microglia/macrophages were

Lycium barbarum Glycopeptide Promotes Testosterone Synthesis and Glucose Metabolism in Leydig Cells of the Testis.

Lycium barbarum extracts have been shown to be effective in male reproductive protection and male infertility. However, its role in enhancing testicular function, such as testosterone synthesis, and the potential mechanism remain to be understood. To elucidate the effects of Lycium barbarum glycopeptide (LbGp) on testosterone synthesis, we isolated primary Leydig cells (LCs) from testes and performed RNA sequencing (RNA seq) on LCs treated with LbGp. In this study, we demonstrated that LbGp promoted testosterone synthesis in LCs both in vivo and in vitro. We also demonstrated that LbGp elevate

New insights into the salt tolerance of the extreme halophytic species Lycium humile (Lycieae, Solanaceae).

Knowledge about Solanaceae species naturally adapted to salinity is scarce, despite the fact that a considerable number of Solanaceae has been reported growing in saline environments. Lycium humile Phil. inhabits extreme saline soils in the Altiplano-Puna region (Central Andes, South America) and represents a promising experimental model to study salt tolerance in Solanaceae plants. Seeds, leaves and roots were collected from a saline environment (Salar del Diablo, Argentina). Seeds were scarified and 30 days after germination salt treatments were applied by adding NaCl salt pulses (up to 750

Effects of long-term consumption of polysaccharides from the fruit of Lycium barbarum on host's health.

Polysaccharides from the fruit of Lycium barbarum (LBPs) are functional molecules with diverse biological functions in vivo and in vitro. This study investigated the long-term consumption of LBPs on host's health in BALB/c mice. Six-week-old male mice (n = 10 each group) were fed either a normal control (NC) diet or supplemented with 200 mg/kg (body weight)/d of LBPs for 14 weeks. Compared with the NC diet, the LBPs diet enhanced the expression of mucin 2 and Claudin5, improved the intestinal barrier morphologically, moreover, promoted the growth of Lactobacillus and strongly increased the pro

Ultrasonic complexation with Lycium barbarum polysaccharide significantly enhances the aqueous solubility and bioavailability of curcumin.

Curcumin is a natural bioactive compound with a wide range of established health benefits. However, its practical applications are severely limited due to extremely poor aqueous solubility, which directly leads to low bioavailability. While polysaccharides like Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) can partially improve curcumin solubility, their solubilization efficiency remains limited. To overcome this challenge, we implemented ultrasonication as an effective processing strategy to enhance LBP's capacity to promote curcumin dissolution. Our findings show that ultrasound-induced cavitation an

Lycium barbarum glycopeptide attenuates orthodontic force-induced alveolar bone loss by activating ATG4D-mediated autophagy.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) requires a delicate balance between osteoclastic bone resorption and osteoblastic bone formation. Excessive mechanical stress disrupts this coupling, leading to alveolar bone loss. Lycium barbarum glycopeptide (LbGP), a natural bioactive compound with antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, has been reported to regulate bone metabolism. However, its precise mechanism in orthodontic bone remodeling remains unclear. PURPOSE: To determine whether LbGP protects alveolar bone during OTM by activating ATG4D-dependent autophagy. METHODS: An OTM rat

Subunit-dependent interfacial assembly of wheat gliadin subunits by Lycium barbarum polysaccharide underlies foam stabilization.

Protein foams are governed by interfacial adsorption kinetics and film stability, yet the subunit-specific regulation of wheat gliadins by polysaccharides remains unclear. Here, the differential responses of α- and ω-gliadin to Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) were systematically elucidated by integrating interfacial tension kinetics, foaming performance, multiscale structure, and atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Under the matched solvent conditions, α-gliadin exhibited higher foaming capacity and stability than ω-gliadin. LBP significantly enhanced the foam stability of both

Targeting retinal degeneration: zeaxanthin dipalmitate from Lycium barbarum L. prevents A2E photooxidation under blue light.

The accumulation of the toxic byproduct A2E in retinal pigment epithelial cells, coupled with blue-light-induced photooxidation, is a key driver of oxidative damage in early age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Zeaxanthin dipalmitate (ZD), the esterified carotenoid abundant in goji berries, has higher lipophilicity and stability. In this study, ZD was isolated from the berries using its fat-soluble nature and purified using medium-pressure liquid chromatography. Isolated ZD and synthesised A2E were structurally characterised using HPLC, NMR, and positive mode LC-ESI-TQ-MS. An acellular phot

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides ameliorates high-fat diet induced lipid accumulation and aging through triggering lipophagy.

It has been reported that hyperlipidemia can induce meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) has been proven to improve abnormal blood lipids. However, it is still unclear whether LBP exerts a protective effect on MGD caused by hyperlipidemia. This study aims to explore the effect and specific mechanism by which LBP on MGD induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). In present study, we clarified that HFD induced lipid accumulation, inhibited autophagy, and promoted aging by suppressing the AMPK pathway in mice meibomian glands (MG). Not only that, similar results were al
