MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF SARCOCYSTIS SPOROCYSTS IN INTESTINES OF BOBCAT (LYNX RUFUS) FROM MINNESOTA.

Sarcocystis species are heteroxenous protozoan parasites of major veterinary and public health relevance, yet the role of wild felids in their natural transmission cycles remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated Sarcocystis infections in 189 bobcats (Lynx rufus) harvested from Minnesota during 2024-2025. Intestinal homogenates of 179 were examined microscopically, and Sarcocystis sporocysts were found in 38 bobcats (21.2%). DNA was extracted from all 38 positive samples, of which 19 were PCR-positive, and 14 yielded high-quality sequences for molecular characterization using p

Assessment of Eurasian lynx reintroduction success and mortality risk in north-west Poland.

Despite recent local reintroductions of the Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx in central and north-eastern Poland, the increase in its population was not followed by its westward expansion. To address this problem and restore the lynx population in north-western Poland, 61 captive-born individuals of Baltic population origin were released in the province of Western Pomerania in 2019-2021. Prior to their release, all the animals underwent an adaptation training phase. They were then set free according to a hard-release protocol and subsequently monitored by means of GPS telemetry. In order to assess the

Detection of Trichinella murrelli and Trichinella pseudospiralis in bobcats (Lynx rufus) from Oklahoma.

Trichinella spp. infect wild carnivores throughout the world. We determined the prevalence and mean infection intensity of Trichinella spp. in bobcats (Lynx rufus) from 41 counties in Oklahoma (USA). Tongues from 306 bobcats were examined using artificial tissue digestion. The prevalence (95% confidence interval) of Trichinella spp. was 5.9% (3.7%-9.2%) in which 18 of the 301 bobcats were infected. Bobcats infected with Trichinella spp. were detected in 10 of the 41 (24.4%; 13.7%-39.5%) counties sampled. Although variable, a statistically significant difference was not detected in the prevalen

Age-specific patterns of reproductive success in wild female Eurasian lynx across Europe.

Reproductive lifespan and age-specific reproductive performance are key life-history traits, shaping individual fitness and population dynamics. Here, we examine age-specific variation in reproductive success in a wild large carnivore, the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), using 38 years of longitudinal data from 173 known-age females across Europe and western Asia. Female lynx exhibited age-related reproductive patterns: (i) breeding probability increased with age before declining at older ages, (ii) litter size remained generally stable at two kittens, although it declined to one kitten in older mo

Three Distinct Circovirids Identified in a Tapeworm Recovered from a Bobcat (Lynx rufus).

Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are an iconic North American predator; however, there is limited knowledge regarding their associated parasites. In this case study, we used a metagenomic approach to identify associated viruses and helminth species from a deceased bobcat. We determined the full mitochondrial genome of the bobcat and three helminths, i.e., tapeworm (Taenia sp.), stomach worm (Physaloptera sp.), and lung worm (Metathelazia sp.). Furthermore, we identified four circovirids; two (identified in a tapeworm and fecal swab) are members of the genus Circovirus and share 96.7% genome-wide identity

"Ears of the Lynx" Sign on Brain MRI in Siblings With Spastic Paraplegia: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a rare, clinically and genetically heterogenous condition that selectively affects the terminal segment of the descending corticospinal tract of the lumbar spine area, causing lower extremity spastic weakness with or without associated complex neurological symptoms. HSP type 11 is the most common form of autosomal recessive HSP and has unique clinical and neuroimaging features. METHODS: We describe the clinical manifestations and imaging features of siblings with childhood-onset autosomal recessive HSP. Genetic testing confirmed compound hete

Identification of a Mutation in SPG11 in an Iranian Patient with Spastic Paraplegia and Ears of the Lynx Sign.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) includes a number of inherited disorders which are characterized by stiffness in the lower extremities and progressive gait disturbance. Mutations in terms of spastic gait genes (SPGs) are responsible for occurrence of different types of HPS with autosomal recessive, X-linked recessive, and autosomal dominant modes of inheritance. In the current case report, we identified a mutation in SPG11 gene in a female patient with progressive stiffness of lower extremities and atrophy of corpus callosum and the "lynx ear" sign in brain MRI. "Ears of the Lynx" MRI Sign Is Associated with SPG11 and SPG15 Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The "ears of the lynx" MR imaging sign has been described in case reports of hereditary spastic paraplegia with a thin corpus callosum, mostly associated with mutations in the spatacsin vesicle trafficking associated gene, causing Spastic Paraplegia type 11 (SPG11). This sign corresponds to long T1 and T2 values in the forceps minor of the corpus callosum, which appears hyperintense on FLAIR and hypointense on T1-weighted images. Our purpose was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the ears of the lynx MR imaging sign for genetic cases compared with common po

Assessment of the prevalence of Trichinella spp. in red foxes and Eurasian lynxes from Switzerland.

Trichinella spp. larvae have not been detected in Swiss pigs, horses, or wild boar for many decades, whereas the parasite was repeatedly isolated from red foxes and Eurasian lynxes. Whenever the isolated larvae could be subjected to genotyping, T. britovi was found as infective agent. The present study was initiated to re-assess the epidemiological situation of Trichinella infection in Swiss carnivorous wildlife, namely in red foxes and lynxes. Tissue samples from 1,298 foxes were collected between 2006 and 2007, and those of 55 lynxes between 1999 and 2007. All samples were tested by a standa

Novel lynx spider toxin shares common molecular architecture with defense peptides from frog skin.

A unique 30-residue cationic peptide oxyopinin 4a (Oxt 4a) was identified in the venom of the lynx spider Oxyopes takobius (Oxyopidae). Oxt 4a contains a single N-terminally located disulfide bond, Cys4-Cys10, and is structurally different from any spider toxin studied so far. According to NMR findings, the peptide is disordered in water, but assumes a peculiar torpedo-like structure in detergent micelles. It features a C-terminal amphipathic α-helical segment (body; residues 12-25) and an N-terminal disulfide-stabilized loop (head; residues 1-11), and has an unusually high density of positive

Epizootiologic investigations of selected infectious disease agents in free-ranging Eurasian lynx from Sweden.

Serum samples from 106 Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) from across Sweden, found dead or shot by hunters in 1993-99, were investigated for presence of antibodies to feline parvovirus (FPV), feline coronavirus, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus, feline immunodeficiency virus, Francisella tularensis, and Anaplasma phagocytophila, and for feline leukemia virus antigen. In addition, tissue samples from 22 lynx submitted in 1999 were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect nucleic acids specific for viral agents and A. phagocytophila. Except for FPV antibodies in one lynx and

Infection with the zoonotic nematode, Trichinella murrelli in bobcats (Lynx rufus) from Minnesota, USA.

During a survey for other parasitic infections, tongue and limb muscles of wild bobcats (Lynx rufus) were examined microscopically from a sample of 190 Minnesota bobcats. One batch (n = 50) was studied in 2015, yielding no cases of Trichinella when examined only with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining of <25 mg of tissue. In a 2024 cohort (n = 140), this method was paired with a compression of ∼5 g of tissue. Although these methods were not perfectly suited to the detection of Trichinella, such larvae were nonetheless identified in one specimen. Genetic data confirmed these as Trichinella mur

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Endangered Wild Felines (Felis silvestris and Lynx pardinus) in Spain.

The wildcat (Felis silvestris) and the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) are important species in Spain, considered as near-threatened and endangered, respectively. Both can be infected by Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that can cause morbidity and mortality in transplacentally-infected or immunocompromised mammals. The data on the prevalence of this parasite in wild populations of these species in Spain are outdated. The objective of this study was to update information and evaluate the role of these felines in parasite epidemiology and the potential impact of the parasite on their conservation. Bl

Non-invasive monitoring of hormones: a tool to improve reproduction in captive breeding of the Eurasian lynx.

The survival of many critical endangered mammal species is often depending on successful captive breeding programmes which include the future option of reintroduction to the wild. Breeding in captivity also demands the application of modern assisted reproductive techniques to ensure maximal biodiversity, but knowledge on reproductive physiology is often limited. Therefore, non-invasive monitoring of urinary and faecal hormones has become an important tool for reproductive management. To exemplify the importance of non-invasive hormone monitoring, we choose the Eurasian lynx as a model for the

Toxic load at the top of the food chain: Eurasian Lynx exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides in Switzerland.

Wild mammals are widely exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). This was demonstrated for both rodent predators and carnivores eating mainly large prey such as wolf or Mountain lion. To date, only little information is available on the exposure of the Eurasian lynx to ARs, a top predator endangered in Western Europe. Here, we monitored the liver concentrations of ARs in 123 Eurasian lynxes collected during 2014-2022 in Switzerland, a country that hosts one of the main populations in this part of its range. Relations between AR concentrations and health indicators like iron deficiency, bod

Comparing the Efficacy of Two Immobilization Drug Combinations for the Chemical Restraint of Bobcats (Lynx rufus).

Chemical immobilization agents that provide rapid induction time, short duration of action, wide margin of safety, and postreversal recovery are important attributes to the handling process of immobilized animals. Retention of functional variation despite extreme genomic erosion: MHC allelic repertoires in the Lynx genus.

BACKGROUND: Demographic bottlenecks erode genetic diversity and may increase endangered species' extinction risk via decreased fitness and adaptive potential. The genetic status of species is generally assessed using neutral markers, whose dynamic can differ from that of functional variation due to selection. The MHC is a multigene family described as the most important genetic component of the mammalian immune system, with broad implications in ecology and evolution. The genus Lynx includes four species differing immensely in demographic history and population size, which provides a suitable
