The α-glucosidase and maltase inhibitory effects of Punica granatum L. flowers (PGF) were investigated. The methanol extract (PGFMe), n-hexane extract (PGFH), chloroform extract (PGFC) and the remaining water fraction (PGFW) were assayed for their α-glucosidase and maltase inhibitory effects. PGFW showed potent α-glucosidase inhibition with IC₅₀ of 0.8 μg/mL followed by PGFMe (IC₅₀ of 4.0 μg/mL) then PGFC (IC₅₀ of 5.21 μg/mL) in comparison to acarbose (0.9 μM). Due to its selectivity towards α-glucosidase, PGFC was subjected to bioactivity-guided isolation of its main active constituents. Five

Fourteen consecutive cases of erysipeloid cutaneous leishmaniasis were seen and evaluated. There were 13 females and one male patient with a mean age of 59 years. Diagnosis was based on clinical grounds and the presence of amastigotes in the lesions. Patients were divided into acute and chronic groups, with chronicity being defined as a disease duration of more than a year. All cases were treated with a fresh preparation of a herbal mixture, namely "Z-HE". The paste was applied once daily for 5 consecutive days and thereafter every 2 weeks, as needed, for a maximum period of 3 months. Two pati

Mercuric chloride (HgCL2) is an environmental and industrial toxicant that affects many tissues. Considering oxidative stress is an important component of mercury induced hepatotoxicity, antioxidants are expected to play a protective role against it. The present study was designed to investigate the probable effects of pomegranate seed oil (PSO) on hepatotoxicity induced by HgCL₂, administration in rats. Rats were divided into five groups. Group 1 and 2 received corn oil (1 mL/kg, i.p.) and PSO (0.8 mL/kg, i.p.), respectively. Group 3 was treated with HgCl, (5 mg/kg, i.p.) for 3 days. In group

BACKGROUND: Liver fibrosis is a feature in the majority of chronic liver diseases and oxidative stress is considered to be its main pathogenic mechanism. Antioxidants including vitamin E, are effective in preventing liver fibrogenesis. Several plant-drived antioxidants, such as silymarin, baicalin, beicalein, quercetin, apigenin, were shown to interfere with liver fibrogenesis. The antioxidans above are polyphenols, flavonoids or structurally related compounds which are the main chemical components of Pomegranate peels and seeds, and the antioxidant activity of Pomegranate peels and seeds have
