Highly Porous Magnetic Janus Microparticles with Asymmetric Surface Topology.

Monodispersed magnetic Janus particles composed of a porous polystyrene portion and a nonporous poly(vinyl acetate) portion with embedded oleic acid-coated magnetic nanoparticles were generated using microfluidic emulsification followed by two distinct phase separation events triggered by solvent evaporation. The template droplets were composed of 2 wt % polystyrene, 2 wt % poly(vinyl acetate), and 0.5-2 wt % n-heptane-based magnetic fluid dissolved in dichloromethane (DCM). The porosity of polystyrene compartments was the result of phase separation between a nonvolatile nonsolvent (n-heptane)

Synthesis of Manganese Zinc Ferrite Nanoparticles in Medical-Grade Silicone for MRI Applications.

The aim of this project is to fabricate hydrogen-rich silicone doped with magnetic nanoparticles for use as a temperature change indicator in magnetic resonance imaging-guided (MRIg) thermal ablations. To avoid clustering, the particles of mixed MnZn ferrite were synthesized directly in a medical-grade silicone polymer solution. The particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, temperature-dependent nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry (20 °C to 60 °C, at 3.0 T), and magnetic reso

Intracranial tumors mimicking benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is a common type of vertigo seen by the otolaryngologist; however, intracranial tumors can mimic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in their presentation. A review of patients seen in the Department of Otolaryngology at The Ohio State University between July 1992 and August 1996 identified five patients with intracranial pathologic conditions mimicking benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. These patients were first seen with episodic vertigo associated with positional change. Failure of the symptoms to respond to the particle repositioning maneuver or the

Molecular composition of iron oxide nanoparticles, precursors for magnetic drug targeting, as characterized by confocal Raman microspectroscopy.

The chemical and structural properties of ferrite-based nanoparticles, precursors for magnetic drug targeting, have been studied by Raman confocal multispectral imaging. The nanoparticles were synthesised as aqueous magnetic fluids by co-precipitation of ferrous and ferric salts. Dehydrated particles corresponding to co-precipitation (CP) and oxidation (OX) steps of the magnetic fluid preparation have been compared in order to establish oxidation-related Raman features. These are discussed in correlation with the spectra of bulk iron oxides (magnetite, maghemite and hematite) recorded under th

Magnetic Anisotropy Dominates over Physical and Magnetic Structure in Performance of Magnetic Nanoflowers.

Magnetic nanoparticles are indispensable in many biomedical applications, but it remains unclear how the composition and structure will influence the application specific performance. We consider two compositions, ferrite and cobalt ferrite, synthesized under conditions that create aggregated multi-core nanoparticles, called nanoflowers. Each nanoflower has an ionic surfactant or dextran to provide colloid stability in water. The composition, but not the coating, greatly impacts the heating output and the magnetic particle imaging tracer quality (with cobalt ferrite significantly reduced compa

[A Survey of Dosimetry in the Magnetic Field of MR-Linacs].

In recent years, MR-Linac, a radiotherapy linear accelerator (linac) equipped with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, has been deployed in clinical facilities across Japan. Because of the magnetic field of MR-Linac, which can affect the dose distributions and dose response of ionization chambers, conventional reference dosimetry for absorbed dose to water using an ionization chamber becomes impractical. Consequently, the magnetic field effect should be considered in the reference dosimetry for MR-Linac. Although numerous studies have delved into this matter and several magnetic field correction

Adsorptive removal of micron-sized polystyrene particles using magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles.

Microplastics are able to pass through many filtration systems due to their small sizes, making it difficult to remove them from, for example, water. In this study, we evaluated the ability of using magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles to achieve the adsorptive removal of micron-sized polystyrene (microPS) particles. Application of a magnet for 3 min to an aqueous sample of microPS particles mixed with iron oxide nanoparticles for 1 min was able to effectively remove the microPS particles from the water. Transmission electron microscopy images of such samples showed the formation of Fe3O4

Silicone synovitis: MR imaging in five patients.

Silicone synovitis is a known complication of silicone implants used in orthopedic surgery for joint reconstruction. It has been studied with routine radiography; however, no report on magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities of this condition exist in the literature. This article reports on five patients with silicone synovitis studied by magnetic resonance imaging. All patients showed hypointense implants that were deformed, fragmented or subluxed, and intra- and periarticular silicone particles were evident on T1- and T2-weighted images.

Active microgel particle swarms for intrabronchial targeted delivery.

Intrabronchial delivery of therapeutic agents is critical to the treatment of respiratory diseases. Targeted delivery is demanded because of the off-target accumulation of drugs in normal lung tissues caused by inhalation and the limited motion dexterity of clinical bronchoscopes in tortuous bronchial trees. Herein, we developed microrobotic swarms consisting of magnetic hydrogel microparticles to achieve intrabronchial targeted delivery. Under programmed magnetic fields, the microgel particle swarms performed controllable locomotion and adaptative structure reconfiguration in tortuous and air

Polymeric micelles as carriers of diagnostic agents.

This review deals with diagnostic applications of polymeric micelles composed of amphiphilic block-copolymers. In aqueous solutions these polymers spontaneously form particles with diameter 20-100 nm. A variety of diagnostic moieties can be incorporated covalently or non-covalently into the particulates with high loads. Resulting particles can be used as particulate agents for diagnostic imaging using three major imaging modalities: gamma-scintigraphy, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. The use of polyethyleneoxide-diacyllipid micelles loaded with chelated (111)In/Gd(3+) as we

A polymeric fastener can easily functionalize liposome surfaces with gadolinium for enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

Common methods of loading magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents into nanoparticles often suffer from challenges related to particle formation, complex chemical modification/purification steps, and reduced contrast efficiency. This study presents a simple, yet advanced process to address these issues by loading gadolinium, an MRI contrast agent, exclusively on a liposome surface using a polymeric fastener. The fastener, so named for its ability to physically link the two functional components together, consisted of chitosan substituted with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) t

The effect of ligands on FePt-Fe3O4 core-shell magnetic nanoparticles.

FePt-Fe3O4 core-shell nanoparticles functionalized with 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) ligands were synthesized and characterized. We found that the DOPAC ligand enhances the magnetic properties of the FePt-Fe3O4 particles, in comparison with the DMSA ligand, which induces the oxidation of the shell layer that causes a significant reduction of the saturation magnetization. The synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were evaluated for applications in magnetic hyperthermia and magnetic resonance imaging contrast enhancement.

Phosphatidylcholine-coated iron oxide nanomicelles for in vivo prolonged circulation time with an antibiofouling protein corona.

We report the synthesis of micellar phosphatidylcholine-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as a new long circulation contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging. Oleic acid-coated Fe3 O4 nanoparticles were first prepared through thermal degradation and then encapsulated into small clusters with a phosphatidylcholine coating to obtain hydrophilic nanomicelles. A thorough characterization confirmed the chemical nature of the coating and the excellent colloidal stability of these nanomicelles in aqueous media. Magnetization and relaxivity properties proved their suitability as m

Simulation-Guided Tracer Optimization for Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy: Interplay of Core, Shell and Anisotropy Across Physiological-Range Viscosities for Single- and Dual-Frequency Excitation.

Detection of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) relies on their nonlinear magnetic response, changing with the local environment in vivo. Employing an effective viscosity model within stochastic coupled Néel-Brownian simulations, we quantify how viscosity (0.8-50 000 mPa·s) affects signal intensity of single-frequency magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS, 25 kHz) and frequency-mixing MPS (FM-MPS; fH = 40.5 kHz, fL = 0.063 kHz). We investigate single-core, non-interacting MNP with various core sizes (12-28 nm), hydrodynamic shell thicknesses (5-100 nm), and anisotropy (4-200 kJ m- 3), using dominant r

Bridging the resolution gap in alpha therapy dosimetry: a space for quantitative MRI?

While external beam radiotherapy relies heavily on pre-treatment imaging for advanced treatment planning and radiation dosimetry, tools for predicting local dose delivery in systemic radiopharmaceutical therapies have generally lagged behind. Furthermore, targeted alpha particle-emitting radiopharmaceuticals, with their uniquely short range and high-energy dose deposition, require specialized dosimetry methods at the micro- and mesoscale. Magnetic resonance imaging methods may represent the missing link between standard diagnostic tumor imaging and personalized radionuclide treatment planning

Preparation of magnetite-loaded silica microspheres for solid-phase extraction of genomic DNA from soy-based foodstuffs.

Solid-phase extraction has been widely employed for the preparation of DNA templates for polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based analytical methods. Among the variety of adsorbents studied, magnetically responsive silica particles are particularly attractive due to their potential to simplify, expedite, and automate the extraction process. Here we report a facile method for the preparation of such magnetic particles, which entails impregnation of porous silica microspheres with iron salts, followed by calcination and reduction treatments. The samples were characterized using powder X-ray diffrac
