The elbow is a complex joint. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is often the imaging modality of choice in the workup of elbow pain, especially in sports injuries and younger patients who often have either a history of a chronic repetitive strain such as the throwing athlete or a distinct traumatic injury. Traumatic injuries and alternative musculoskeletal pathologies can affect the ligaments, musculotendinous, cartilaginous, and osseous structures of the elbow as well as the 3 main nerves to the upper limb, and these structures are best assessed with MRI.Knowledge of the complex anatomy of the

Low back and neck pain are common and result in significant patient disability and health care expenditure. When conservative treatment fails or worrisome clinical findings are present, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice to assess the cause and complicating features of spine pain. There are many potential aetiologies of spine pain with similar clinical presentation, including degenerative changes, infection, and insufficiency and pathologic fractures. MRI allows for the differentiation of these sources of spine pain and potential complicating features, permittin

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) employs the nuclear resonance phenomenon to produce images of living tissues. Unlike computed tomography (CT), which relies solely on differences in the propensity of tissues to absorb X-rays to produce various contrasts, MRI offers a wide variety of pulse sequences, each of which exploits differences in the magnetic properties of protons in living tissue to produce contrast resolution. When optimal protocols are used, MRI contrast resolution in the orbital soft tissues is superior to that provided by any other imaging modality. Other advantages of MRI over CT

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides useful information regarding the elbow joint. Many abnormalities seen in the elbow are a result of trauma, often from sports such as baseball and tennis. Elbow problems are frequently related to the medial tension-lateral compression phenomenon where repeated valgus stress produces flexor-pronator strain, ulnar collateral ligament sprain, ulnar traction spurring, and ulnar neuropathy. The lateral compression causes osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum and radial head, degenerative arthritis, and loose bodies. Other elbow abnormalities seen on MR

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging plays an important role in evaluation of ocular and orbital lesions. Ocular tumors can be distinguished and delineated from adjacent fluid collections. Demonstration of internal septa within a well-defined mass leads to the diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma, whereas vascularity and internal lobulations are the hallmark of capillary hemangiomas. MR is the procedure of choice for evaluation of the optic nerve sheath complex. It precisely delineates and characterizes optic neuritis, optic gliomas, and perioptic meningiomas.

MR imaging has emerged as the most accurate imaging modality for the evaluation of many conditions affecting the uterus. This technique can both define the normal internal anatomy of the uterus and monitor the physiologic responses of this organ to various endogenous and exogenous stimuli. MR imaging provides unique diagnostic information that may guide therapeutic management of developmental anomalies, adenomyosis, and endometrial carcinoma.

As improvements in surface coil technology and imaging sequences continue, increased applicability of MRI to small yet complex structures such as the wrist is assured. Almost certainly, the full potential of MRI in the wrist has yet to be realized, and its versatility is perhaps limited only by the radiologist's experience. As we become more adept at this modality, it will become an increasingly important component in the radiology armamentarium.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is becoming a primary modality for evaluating the mediastinum. MR affords multiplanar imaging capabilities without exposing patients to ionizing radiation. The inherent contrast effect of different mediastinal tissues sharply delineates anatomic structures on MR images without contrast enhancement. Gradient-echo and phase-mapping techniques permit noninvasive qualitative and quantitative assessment of mediastinal blood flow. High soft tissue contrast and flow analysis capabilities make MR imaging a valuable modality for evaluating mediastinal vascular disorders.

Until recently magnetic resonance imaging of the musculoskeletal system tended to be confined to the larger joints, such as the knee and shoulder. Advances in magnetic resonance technology, especially in the area of improved software and development of surface coils, have made feasible the imaging of smaller joints, such as the wrist. This article reviews the potential applications of magnetic resonance in evaluating disorders of the wrist.

The development of appropriate surface coils has resulted in outstanding depiction of the laryngeal anatomy using MRI. The multiplanar capability of MR allows superior definition of anatomy and tumor extent compared with CT scanning. MR appears to be more effective in detecting cartilage invasion. MR is as effective as CT in defining adenopathy and extension into the carotid sheath. MRI is therefore the primary modality in imaging the larynx.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is gaining acceptance as the diagnostic imaging procedure of choice for the disorders of the knee. MRI can reliably display tears of the menisci and ligaments. It also has an unmatched capability of detecting and assessing a wide spectrum of knee disorders that may be present as nonspecific knee pain: osteonecrosis, osteochondritis dissecans, stress fracture, bone and soft-tissue tumors, and vascular abnormalities. Practicing orthopedists should become better acquainted with this powerful diagnostic tool that can be an invaluable asset to their clinical practic

The results of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations in 50 patients with histological or clinical diagnoses of retroperitoneal disorders and 20 normal volunteers are presented. An increase in relaxation time (T1) was recognised in most pathological conditions except for four liposarcomas and one adrenal cortical neoplasm and one metastatic lesion of the same gland. Inversion recovery (IR) provided the best tissue contrast, enabling the detection of small lesions. Flow-dependent sequences and sagittal imaging planes were particularly helpful in the evaluation of aortic aneurysms. Ferric

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the adrenals was performed on 50 subjects: 5 normal volunteers, 6 Cushing patients with bilateral adrenal hyperplasia, 14 patients with adrenal adenomas, 3 with adrenal carcinomas, 15 with pheochromocytomas and 7 with metastatic disease to the adrenal. The normal and hyperplastic adrenal glands were imaged in all cases. Using the signal intensity of the adrenals on a T2 weighted image, various forms of adrenal pathology could be differentiated. A ratio of signal intensity of the adrenal mass to the liver was utilized and allowed the differentiation of adrena

The prostate was examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 33 subjects, including five normal volunteers, 18 with prostatic carcinomas, seven with benign nodular hyperplasias, two cases of acute prostatitis, and one case of chronic prostatitis. Of 18 prostatic carcinomas, 16 produced an inhomogeneous signal intensity, with areas of diminished signal on T1-weighted scans and usually increased signal on T2-weighted images relative to the rest of the prostate. However, a similar appearance was also seen in five cases of benign nodular hyperplasia. It is doubtful at present whether MRI is ab

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a new technique in chest radiology. It appears to be particularly useful in examining the hila. Other regions of the mediastinum can also be successfully imaged, and vessels are well seen. MRI has become the procedure of choice for evaluating dissecting aortic aneurysms, especially in stable patients. Imaging of other conditions and diseases has yielded information comparable to that obtained with CT.

A study of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances of the kidneys in six normal volunteers and 52 patients is reported. Corticomedullary differentiation was seen with the inversion-recovery (IR 1400/400) sequence in the normal volunteers and in patients with functioning transplanted kidneys and acute tubular necrosis. Partial or total loss of corticomedullary differentiation was seen in glomerulonephritis, acute and chronic renal failure, renal artery stenosis, and transplant rejection. The T1 of the kidneys was increased in glomerulonephritis with nephrotic syndrome, but the T1 was w
