Detection of novel gammaherpesviruses in wild animals of South Africa.

Herpesviral DNA was detected in 24/261 DNA samples that were extracted from whole blood of 13 wild animal species in South Africa. Herpesviral DNA was shown in 22 impalas (Aepyceros melampus) and 2 springboks (Antidorcas marsupialis). All of DNA sequences detected in impalas were identical, whereas two DNA sequences detected in springboks were different each other. These three sequences showed 44 to 72% homology to the corresponding gene of the Gammaherpesvirinae, indicating that these three viruses should be unrecognized novel gammaherpesviruses. The putative novel herpesviruses were tentativ

Molecular weapons against agricultural vulnerability and the war on terror.

The multiple reports in this issue of the Journal from the Agenda for Action conference, coupled with the analysis by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Research Council, and the Auditor General (UK) on bioterror preparedness and homeland security, highlight the immediate need for rapid disease detection and advanced diagnostic capabilities to protect the public health, animal agriculture, and the numerous associated economies in the United States. In response to the potentially devastating consequences that could arise, there is an acute need for rapid detection of a variety of th

[Diagnostic aspects of neurological diseases of cattle. A retrospective study].

188 bovines with neurological disease were analysed in a retrospective study. We found that only few diseases can be diagnosed on the basis of neurologic signs only. However, with a few additional clinical data such as signalment, history, extraneural findings, hematological findings and cerebrospinal fluid analysis, a diagnosis can be made in many cases. A history of neurologic signs occurring since birth, is highly suggestive of a congenital malformation. High fever and mucosal changes are typical for malignant catarrhal fever. Lesions of peripheral nerves and spinal cord compression can be

18F-FDG PET/CT in lung B lymphoid hyperplasia-type Castleman disease.

We present a 62-year-old woman who, after a catarrhal episode, underwent a chest xray and a chest CT, identifying a pleural-based mass in the left lower lobe. This lesion presented a mixed pattern with solid and peripheral ground-glass attenuation, and an air-bronchogram sign. Despite de suspicion of bronchopneumonia, a lung neoplasm like a predominantly lepidic adenocarcinoma could not be ruled. A 18 F-FDG PET/CT showed a focal radiotracer uptake with SUVmax of 5.34 in the pulmonary lesion, supporting the neoplastic etiology. Consequently, a lower lobectomy was performed and histological exam

A review of mutual transmission of important infectious diseases between livestock and wildlife in Europe.

Oral vaccination of red foxes against rabies has been practiced in Europe since 1978 and has succeeded in greatly reducing the occurrence of this disease in foxes: this is an example of coordinated activity against a disease that affects both wild and domestic animals as well as humans. Some examples of diseases that affect both domestic and wild animals in Europe are: classical swine fever (hog cholera) in wild boars and domestic swine; myxomatosis and rabbit hemorrhagic disease in domestic and wild rabbits; bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) in cattle and roe deer; contagious ecthyma in domestic sh

Viral Diseases in Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis): New Insights and Perspectives.

The water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) has great adaptability to rustic environments and more variable conditions than cattle, who generally share the habitat. Diseases carried by buffaloes are relatively unknown and ignored and could be transmissible; an imbalance occurs between pathogens, environment, and susceptible hosts, generating a severe animal health problem. Also relevant is the effect of climate change on the populations of vectors that transmit viral diseases. The discovery of new virus variants that can pass from bovine (Bos) to buffalo or vice versa or to humans has highlighted the

Gammaherpesvirus Infections in Cattle in Europe.

The genus Macavirus, subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae, comprises ungulate viruses that infect domestic and wild ruminants and swine. They cause asymptomatic latent infections in reservoir hosts and malignant catarrhal fever in susceptible species. Lung, spleen, bronchial lymph node, and tongue were collected from 448 cattle (348 necropsied, 100 slaughtered) in Switzerland, United Kingdom, Finland, Belgium, and Germany to determine their infection with bovine herpesvirus-6 (BoHV-6) and gammaherpesviruses of other ruminants, i.e., ovine herpesvirus-1 and -2, caprine herpesvirus-2, and bison lymphotr

[Foot-and-mouth disease and its differential diagnoses].

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals, which leads to the formation of vesicles, erosions und ulcerations in the mouth and hairless parts of the skin, in particular on the feet. Due to its dramatic economic consequences, FMD is considered to be one of the most important diseases of animals. There is a permanent risk of introduction of the virus into Europe due to travel and illegal importation of agricultural products. Cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and related game animals) are the typical hosts of the FMD virus. However,

The Cytoplasmic Tail of Ovine Herpesvirus 2 Glycoprotein B Affects Cell Surface Expression and Is Required for Membrane Fusion.

Ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) causes the fatal veterinary disease malignant catarrhal fever (MCF). Fusion is an essential step in the host cell entry of enveloped viruses and is an important target for vaccine development. OvHV-2 cannot be propagated in vitro, so a robust virus-free cell-cell membrane fusion assay is necessary to elucidate its entry mechanism. OvHV-2 cell-cell fusion requires three conserved herpesviral envelope glycoproteins: gB, gH, and gL. OvHV-2 fusion activity is detectable but low. We hypothesize that enhancing the cell surface expression of gB, which is the core herpesvi

Possible Association of Bovine Gammaherpesvirus 6 with Pulmonary Disease in a Cow.

Bovine gammaherpesvirus 6 (BoGHV6), previously known as bovine lymphotropic virus, is a member of the Macavirus genus, subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae. Other members of the genus Macavirus include viruses that produce malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) in mammalian hosts, collectively referred to as the MCF virus (MCFV) complex, and the porcine lymphotropic herpesvirus (PLHV). However, the current role of BoGHV6 in the development of diseases and/or disease syndromes remains uncertain and controversial. This paper investigated the participation of BoGHV6 in the development of pulmonary disease in a

Neutralising antibody to herpesviruses dervied from wildebeest and hartebeest in wild animals in East Africa.

The sera of 728 game animals, collected in East Africa, were tested for neutralising antibody to a strain (WC11) of wildebeest herpesvirus, which is an important cause of malignant catarrhal fever of cattle. In addition, 290 of these sera were tested for neutralising activity against a closely related herpesvirus (K/30) from hartebeest (Alcelaphus sp.). Antibody was frequently present in three species of the subfamily Alcelaphinae (wildebest, hartebeest and topi) and one of the subfamily Hippotraginae (oryx). No activity was found in the sera of nine other species of four additional subfamilie

Diphtheric aspergillosis tracheitis with gastrointestinal dissemination secondary to viral infections in a dairy calf.

Diphtheric aspergillosis tracheitis is an uncommon syndrome described in human pathology, usually associated with immunosuppression in the affected individuals. Interestingly, no comparative/equivalent cases were found in domestic animals. This report describes the pathological and mycological findings associated with diphtheric aspergillosis tracheitis in an immunocompromised calf. The main pathological findings were diphtheric tracheitis and rhinitis, and necrotizing ruminitis associated with intralesional septate, acute branching fungal hyphae consistent with Aspergillus spp. Mycological cu

A participatory epidemiological study of major cattle diseases amongst Maasai pastoralists living in wildlife-livestock interfaces in Maasai Mara, Kenya.

Livestock-wildlife interactions promote the transmission of a wide range of infectious diseases that constraint livestock production. We used a participatory appraisal approach to find out and rank infectious diseases of concern to pastoralists in a zone of intense wildlife-livestock interaction and another zone with limited interactions. Four villages were selected purposively in areas with intensive cattle-wildlife interactions (zone 1), and another two in areas with low to moderate cattle-wildlife interactions (zone 2). Data were collected in focus group discussions (FGDs) using participato

A review of infectious interstitial and bronchointerstitial pneumonia in cattle with an algorithm for the detection of infectious and non-infectious causes.

Bovine interstitial and bronchointerstitial pneumonias are common and important diseases of cattle, caused by several infectious and non-infectious causes. Here, we review the roles of bovine respiratory syncytial virus, bovine parainfluenza virus 3, bovine alphaherpesvirus 1, bovine viral diarrhea virus, bovine coronavirus, influenza D virus, malignant catarrhal fever virus, and bovine adenovirus in interstitial or bronchointerstitial pneumonia. We describe the possible causes, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of bacterial septicemias that result in interstitial pneumonia, including E. coli, Salmo

Intestinal and mesenteric lymphangitis mimicking arteritis in a cow with paratuberculosis.

Paratuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). MAP is transmitted primarily through ingestion of contaminated feces, milk, or water and establishes persistent infection within intestinal macrophages by evading host immune defenses. Typical lesions include granulomatous enteritis, lymphangitis, and lymphadenitis. Lymphangitis mimicking arteritis has not been reported in bovine paratuberculosis, to our knowledge. Here, we describe a case of paratuberculosis in a 2-y-old Angus cow that was found dead. Gross changes consis

Pathological findings in African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) in South Africa.

The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is an iconic species of South African megafauna. As the farmed buffalo population expands, the potential impacts on population health and disease transmission warrant investigation. A retrospective study of skin biopsy and necropsy samples from 429 animals was performed to assess the spectrum of conditions seen in buffaloes in South Africa. Determination of the cause of death (or euthanasia) could not be made in 33.1% (136/411) of the necropsy cases submitted due to autolysis or the absence of significant lesions in the samples submitted.
