Background: The Neo-Malone (neo-appendicostomy) is a modification of the antegrade continence enema (ACE) procedure that constructs a new appendix using a cecal flap from the mesenteric side of the colon. Versatility in carbon source utilization is a major contributor to niche adaptation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Malonate is among the abundant carbon sources in the lung airways, yet it is understudied. Recently, we characterized how malonate impacts quorum sensing regulation, antibiotic resistance, and virulence factor production in P. aeruginosa. AIMS: We evaluated the long-term results with a left antegrade continence enema (LACE) approach: "Macedo-Malone (MM) procedure" to define parameters such as clinical durability of the technique and patients' compliance with the method.

PURPOSE: There is little objective data demonstrating improved quality of life after a Malone antegrade continence enema (ACE) despite the dramatic subjective improvements seen by physicians and caretakers.
METHODS: We utilized the FICQOL survey, a reliable and valid instrument for measuring the impact of fecal incontinence and constipation on quality of life (FICQOL) of caregivers and children with spina bifida. Between 2002 and 2009, 23 families were evaluated prospectively before and after an ACE procedure. Items on the survey were compared with Wilcoxon rank sum or signed rank test.

Fecal soiling or intractable constipation frequently occurs in association with urinary incontinence in children with varying pathologic conditions. To manage double incontinence or the combination of wetting and severe constipation, a Mitrofanoff conduit and a channel for antegrade continence enema is constructed using the appendix by open surgery. We present a video of the first case of robot-assisted laparoscopy for simultaneous reconstruction of a continent urinary diversion using the Mitrofanoff principle and a Malone antegrade continent enema using the divided appendix.

During this last decade, major surgical improvements have been proposed for the treatment of patients suffering from faecal incontinence or intractable constipation. Visible-light photoredox catalyzed 1,2-arylalkylation of alkenes with quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones and malonic esters has been developed through direct C(sp2)-H/C(sp3)-H functionalization under mild conditions. A number of quinoxalin-2(1H)-one containing esters could be obtained in moderate to good yields in a step and atom-economic manner. This transformation proceeded through a radical process, which features the advantages of mild conditions, a clean energy source, a wide substrate scope, and favorable functional group compatibility.

BACKGROUND: An option for medically refractory fecal incontinence and/or constipation is the antegrade continence enema (ACE). We investigated ACE usage and its perceptions, including whether patients were able to discontinue use of the appendicostomy/cecostomy tube.
METHODS: Patients who underwent appendicostomy creation or cecostomy tube placement at two institutions between 2012 and 2021 were reviewed. Patients or parents/guardians were contacted for completion of a survey. Summary statistics for clinical data were tabulated and associations were evaluated with chi-square analysis.
