Constrictive pericarditis in the setting of repeated chest trauma in a mixed martial arts fighter.

BACKGROUND: Constrictive pericarditis (CP) is characterized by scarring and loss of elasticity of the pericardium. This case demonstrates that mixed martial arts (MMA) is a previously unrecognized risk factor for CP, diagnosis of which is supported by cardiac imaging, right and left heart catheterization, and histological findings of dense fibrous tissue without chronic inflammation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old Caucasian male former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter from the Western United States presented to liver clinic for elevated liver injury tests (LIT) and a 35-pound weight loss wi

Increasing diversity on spacecraft mission teams reduces risk.

Many of the NASA spacecraft sent into Earth orbit and throughout the Solar System are competitively selected and led by principal investigators (PIs). These senior scientists are responsible for directing research activities, managing the use of funds, and reporting to the funding agency. Additionally, the European Space Agency (ESA) has competitively selected missions that are led by ESA-nominated project scientists and include instruments that are overseen by PIs. Usually, the PIs and project scientists form a science working team that provides scientific leadership of the mission. These NAS

Epidemiological analysis of athlete injuries in Muay Thai in-ring matches.

BACKGROUND: Compared to other sports, combat sports are typically thought to be dangerous and more prone to injury. The injury rates sustained by Muay Thai combat athletes during practice, competition, and tournaments are presented as an overall rate in the literature. However, none of the earlier studies have focused on injuries during official championship matches. Head trauma (5-66%), epistaxis, laceration, contusion (2-28%), soft tissue of the extremities (9-77%), and other conditions have been linked to high rates of disability. In addition to its distinct qualities and growing appeal, Mu

Carpal fractures in athletes.

A review of the literature shows that 3% to 9% of all athletic injuries occur to the hand or wrist. Also, hand and wrist injuries are more common in pubescent and adolescent athletes than adults. Although knee and shoulder injuries are more common athletic injuries, an injury to the hand or wrist significantly can impair the athlete's ability to throw or catch a ball, or swing a bat or racquet. A college football player trains year round for just 11 or 12 hours of playing time. An athletic injury that occurs during the season can have profound consequences for the athlete's career and emotions

Pelvic fractures in professional cyclists: a report of 3 cases.

BACKGROUND: Professional riders demonstrate increased risk factors for such injuries including both extensive time on the bike in addition to a possible underlying osteopenia secondary to the nonimpact nature of the sport. HYPOTHESIS: Nonoperative management of stable, nondisplaced pelvic fractures in professional cyclists offers excellent results. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. METHODS: Three cases of professional cyclists with pelvic fractures were reviewed. RESULTS: All 3 cyclists were able to return to professional competition and remain symptom free. CONCLUSION: Accurate early diagnosis

Monomorphic Ventricular Arrhythmias in Athletes.

Ventricular arrhythmias are challenging to manage in athletes with concern for an elevated risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) during sports competition. Monomorphic ventricular arrhythmias (MMVA), while often benign in athletes with a structurally normal heart, are also associated with a unique subset of idiopathic and malignant substrates that must be clearly defined. A comprehensive evaluation for structural and/or electrical heart disease is required in order to exclude cardiac conditions that increase risk of SCD with exercise, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and arrhythmogenic right v

Resource Competition Between Melon Fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae and Oriental Fruit Fly, Bactrocera dorsalis.

The melon fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae, and the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, are economically important tephritid pests whose sympatric distribution and overlapping host ranges precipitate intense interspecific competitive interactions. To explore the interspecific competition during larval development between these two species, we conducted a comparative study under controlled laboratory conditions. Larvae were evaluated on five host fruits-pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), winter melon (Benincasa hispida), bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), and guava (Psidi

Isolated avulsion fracture at the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle.

An isolated avulsion fracture involving the femoral origin of the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle without an associated muscular, meniscal, or ligamentous injury is extremely rare. We report a case of a 14-year-old male wrestler who presented with a radiographically occult avulsion fracture of the medial gastrocnemius tendon sustained during competition. To our knowledge, this is the first case to describe a mechanism of injury as well as to report a return to competition after non-operative management.

Review of equine feeding and stable management practices in the UK concentrating on the last decade of the 20th century.

Equine feeding and stable management practices for horses kept in the UK vary greatly and it is probable that almost any permutation of regimen could be found somewhere. Unfortunately, there is uncertainty about the number of horses in the UK and very limited data are available on the ways horses are being fed and managed. This paper reviews some of the information that is available and provides an outline of some of the factors influencing the practices used. To a certain extent, the way UK horses are fed and managed primarily reflects the purpose for which they are kept (e.g. racing Thorough

Asthma and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in athletes: Diagnosis, treatment, and anti-doping challenges.

Athletes often experience lower airway dysfunction, such as asthma and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), which affects more than half the athletes in some sports, not least in endurance sports. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness, alongside airway narrowing, hyperresponsiveness, and inflammation. Early diagnosis and management are essential. Not only because untreated or poorly managed asthma and EIB potentially affects competition performance and training, but also because untreated airway inflammation can result in airway epithelial damage, remodeling, and fibro

Associations of waterbirds with harvesting and ploughing events in rice fields: increasing foraging opportunities or just gathering for the feast?

Surges in food availability create localized intense foraging opportunities, often attracting multi-species consumer groups. Agricultural practices can trigger these surges, prompting bird associations. However, the strength and duration of associations and its drivers, remain unclear. This study examines waterbird association with harvesting and ploughing events in rice fields. The duration and magnitude of these associations were determined and three hypotheses addressed to explain them: (1) increased food availability, (2) enhanced foraging success and (3) reduced time allocated to vigilanc

"Impact of regional surgeon competition on use and costs of carpal tunnel releases".

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic CTR (ECTR) accounts for a growing proportion of surgeries over open CTR (OCTR). In a cost-conscious healthcare environment, it is important to characterize the drivers of high-cost care, since OCTR can be performed with similar outcomes but less costs. We investigated whether regional surgeon competition affects the type of CTR. METHODS: : Using MarketScan claims data from 2018 to 2022, we calculated the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, a measure of market competition. Multivariable regression was used to identify factors affecting the type of CTR performed, costs, and compl

A Central Slip Injury in a Professional Basketball Player.

Hand injuries are extremely prevalent in sports such as ball sports. Delayed diagnosis or improperly managed injuries have the potential to prolong the athlete's return to the competition and permanently damage their abilities. We report the case of a 35-year-old male professional basketball player who presented to a chiropractor with pain and swelling of the right fifth finger two days after a basketball game. The injury occurred when a player passed the basketball and the ball hit his fifth finger "head-on". Examination revealed enlargement of the middle joint of the right fifth finger and a

Mechanisms mediating false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (lepidoptera: Tortricidae), mating disruption using point-source pheromone dispensers.

BACKGROUND: False codling moth (FCM) is a polyphagous Tortricid moth that is a priority agricultural pest. Mating disruption shows potential as an environmentally friendly and sustainable control option against FCM in stone fruit, table grapes and citrus. How the technique alters the mate-finding ability of FCM and what factors are important to ensure the control success is uncertain. Recent work indicated that Lepidoptera are disrupted either competitively or non-competitively. No studies have yet been conducted on FCM to determine its disruptive mechanism. However, studies conducted on close

Midlife health crisis of former competitive athletes: dissecting their experiences via qualitative study.

Sports participation confers many health benefits yet greatly increases injury risk. Long-term health outcomes in former athletes and transition to life after competitive sports are understudied. Ending a sport may pose physical and psychosocial challenges. The purpose was to determine the lived experiences of former competitive athletes and how their sports participation impacted their long-term health and well-being. Former college varsity athletes participated in semistructured interviews focusing on their experiences, including past and current health, the impact of injuries, activity, exe

Do follow-on therapeutic substitutes induce price competition between hospital medicines? Evidence from the Danish hospital sector.

OBJECTIVE: The pricing of follow-on drugs, that offer only limited health benefits over existing therapeutic alternatives, is a recurring health policy debate. This study investigates whether follow-on therapeutic substitutes create price competition between branded hospital medicines. METHODS: New follow-on drugs and their incumbent therapeutic competitors were identified from Danish sales and product registration data on hospital pharmaceuticals using medically relevant criteria. We examined whether follow-on drugs adopt lower prices than their incumbent competitors, and whether incumbent c

Functional portal flow competition after auxiliary partial orthotopic living donor liver transplantation in noncirrhotic metabolic liver disease.

Auxilliary partial orthotopic liver transplantation (APOLT) was introduced initially as a tentative or permanent support for patients with potentially reversible fulminant hepatic failure and has extended its indication to congenital metabolic disorder of the liver that has otherwise normal functional integrity. Postoperative management of APOLT is complicated because of functional portal flow competition between the native and graft liver. The native portal vein diversion to the graft is sometimes indicated to prevent functional competition; however, it is still an open question whether this

Recommendations for participation in competitive and leisure time sport in athletes with cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, and pericarditis: position statement of the Sport Cardiology Section of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC).

Myocardial diseases are associated with an increased risk of potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death/cardiac arrest during exercise, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, left ventricular non-compaction, arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, and myo-pericarditis. Practicing cardiologists and sport physicians are required to identify high-risk individuals harbouring these cardiac diseases in a timely fashion in the setting of preparticipation screening or medical consultation and provide appropriate advice regarding the participation in competitive sport
