Facial trauma in pediatric population predisposes the child to injury of both the developing skeleton and dentition. This article aims to highlight the experience of the authors through a case report, in using self-drilling screws for fixation of mandibular fractures in pediatric age group. The use of self-drilling screws minimizes the complications such as thermal and/or mechanical damage to the developing dentition and the bone. They also provide significant advantages including ease of availability and technique, superior anchorage with primary stability, and minimizing or avoiding permanen

Retrieval of the displaced mandibular third molar in the floor of the mouth is challenging as the lingual nerve is always at risk of injury. However, there are no available data to show the incidence of the injury caused by the retrieval. The goal of this review article is to provide the incidence of the iatrogenic lingual nerve impairment/injury caused by the retrieval based on the review of the existing literature. The retrieval cases were collected with the search words below using PubMed, Google Scholar, and CENTRAL Cochrane Library database on October 6, 2021. A total of 38 cases of lingu

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anatomical relationship between mental foramen (MF), including the incidence of the anterior loop of the inferior alveolar nerve (AL), and roots of mandibular teeth in relation to risk of nerve injury with endodontic treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, which included teeth either side of the MF, were randomly selected. The anonymised CBCT images were reconstructed and examined in coronal, axial and sagittal planes, using three-dimensional viewing software, to determine the relationshi

BACKGROUND: Surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molar is associated with a number of complications including postoperative bleeding, dry socket, postoperative infection, and injury to regional nerves. Lingual nerve damage is one of the main complications. To prevent this complication different techniques had been used. Lingual flap reflection is one of these procedures in which lingual soft tissue is reflected and retracted deliberately, the nerve is identified and is kept out of the surgical field. The objective of this study was to evaluate a surgical technique for third molar remo

A 26-year-old woman was referred by a dentist to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon after an unsuccessful attempt to remove a mandibular third molar. A panoramic radiograph showed the remaining root of the third molar and the patient suffered from insensitivity of the lower lip. The root of the third molar was removed surgically. The sensitivity of the lip recovered completely within three months. Injury of the inferior alveolar nerve and the lingual nerve is a serious complication after mandibular third molar removal. The inferior alveolar nerve is at risk for injury if the third molar root is

PURPOSE: The study goal was to determine how sensory function varies across the border of impaired sensitivity to pinprick in patients with mandibular nerve injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Borders of decreased sensitivity to pinprick were mapped in 15 patients who reported altered sensation. Four mechanoreceptive, 2 thermoreceptive, and 2 thermonociceptive functions were studied at 5 sites separated by 0.6 cm across the border. The tests were repeated to evaluate day-to-day consistency in the pattern of variation for each sensory measure.
RESULTS: The estimates of sensory function were not f

The craniofacial complex is an anatomical region that, in humans, can be affected by developmental malformations, trauma, and pathologies such as cancer, leading to the loss of affected tissues. This creates a need to seek strategies for regenerating these lost tissues. This has promoted the study of cellular and molecular mechanisms that orchestrate the regenerative response of injured craniofacial structures in regenerating species, with Ambystoma mexicanum (A. mexicanum) being a species of great interest. In accordance with the above, a reproducible surgical lesion model was designed and st

BACKGROUND: Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is a widely adopted surgical procedure for correcting mandibular deformities, yet neurosensory disturbance (NSD) of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) remains a significant postoperative complication. This complication adversely impacts patients' quality of life due to persistent sensory abnormalities in the lower lip and chin region.
MAIN BODY: This narrative review summarizes anatomical risks and prevention/management strategies. Cone-beam CT (CBCT) may clarify canal anatomy and support risk stratification. Nerve-sparing osteotomy modific

Injuries to the mental nerve are not an uncommon complication in maxillofacial surgeries. Manipulation close to the mental nerve poses a great risk of nerve injury from drills, bone cutting and trimming burs, and oscillating/reciprocating saws. Nerve injuries can be painful and affect the patient's quality of life. The accompanying complication of the nerve injury depends on the severity of the damage inflicted and can range from transient hypoesthesia to neuropathic pain or trigeminal neuralgia. It is considered that direct injury to the nerve may lead to permanent damage and more severe post

Penetrating injuries with reinforced screwed steel bar in the skull base represent a unique challenge for oral maxillofacial surgeons. Management of these injuries is complicated by associated injuries and the proximity to vital neurovascular structures. A 35-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of injury due to a downward fall upon a reinforced steel rod. Radiologic studies of the skull base revealed that the steel bar traversed the temporomandibular space between the left cervical spine and the mastoid process to the space between the inner side of the left mandibular ramus and

BACKGROUND: Neck dissection to remove cervical lymph nodes is common practice in head and neck cancer management. The marginal mandibular nerve may be injured during neck dissection, particularly of level 1. The rate of injury to this nerve is underreported in the literature and its impact on patients is not well defined.
METHODS: An observational study was undertaken on patients who had undergone neck dissection over a 5-year period. The patients were examined for weakness and given a questionnaire related their perception of their appearance and their function.
RESULTS: Sixty-six patients

The yield of clinical sensory tests and electrophysiologic tests in the diagnostics of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) damage after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) was studied. The diagnostic value of these tests was evaluated by comparing the test results to the degree of nerve damage at the end of the operation as documented by means of the intraoperative nerve conduction recording of the IAN. Twenty patients undergoing BSSO were analysed preoperatively and 2 weeks postoperatively. The frequency of the IAN disturbance ranged from 10% to 94% depending on the test method and the test s

Perforation of the lower third molar roots by the inferior alveolar nerve is uncommon and can be difficult to determine by conventional radiographic methods. Presented is a case of perforation that was treated by coronectomy, and showed an unusual complication in that the retained root erupted, moving the canal with it. The radiographic assessment of root perforation and the imaging modalities used to assess such cases are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular cystectomy carries a considerable risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury (IANI); however, current evidence on modifiable preoperative imaging-based risk predictors remains limited. This knowledge gap underscores the critical need for developing advanced risk stratification models to optimize surgical decision-making.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to systematically identify key imaging-derived risk factors for IANI following mandibular cystectomy, quantify their associations, and construct/validate a predictive nomogram for personalized preoperative risk assessm

Periosteal radial forearm free flaps allow functional and curative treatment of osteoradionecrotic jaw lesions. The flap responds physiologically to hypoxia, hypocellularity, and hypovascularity, which are characteristic results of osteoradionecrotic injury. Here, we propose a reproducible, simple, and safe method for harvesting a forearm free flap, allowing us to obtain a periosteal composite free flap. Our technique offers potential early management of osteoradionecrotic lesions resistant to medical treatment. Furthermore, the forearm periosteal composite free flap offers the advantage of a

CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the injury of the marginal mandibular branch improved the recovery of the buccal branch in a rat model.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the injury or intactness of the marginal mandibular branch affects the regeneration of the facial nerve buccal branch in a rat model.
METHODS: This experiment was conducted on 30 adult rats, which were randomly and equally divided into two groups. The buccal branch of the facial nerve was transected and reconstructed, with the marginal mandibular branch damaged (group A) or intact (group B).
