Evaluation of a pilot paediatric concussion telemedicine programme for northern communities in Manitoba.

Pediatric concussion patients living in northern communities in Canada can face unique challenges accessing primary and specialized healthcare. In this study we report the clinical characteristics, healthcare utilization, outcomes and estimated cost avoidance associated with a pilot pediatric concussion telemedicine program established between a multi-disciplinary pediatric concussion program in Winnipeg, Manitoba and a hospital in Thompson, Manitoba. From October 1st- July 1st, 2018, 20 patients were evaluated; mean age 13.1 years, 15 (75%) males and 14 (70%) self-identified as Indigenous. In

Surveillance of Echinococcus tapeworm in coyotes and domestic dogs in Winnipeg, Manitoba: Abstract.

BACKGROUND: The Echinococcus species, including E. multilocularis and E. canadensis, are tapeworms that primarily infect canids such as dogs, foxes and coyotes, but which can also infect humans. In humans, E. multilocularis can cause alveolar echinococcosis; a serious condition that mimics metastatic malignancy and has a poor prognosis. It is known that coyotes in rural Manitoba are infected with Echinococcus species, but it is not known if coyotes in peri-urban areas are also infected. OBJECTIVES: To document and map Echinococcus species in wild canids and domestic dogs in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Rate of Appendiceal Metastasis with Non-Serous Epithelial Ovarian Cancer in Manitoba.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to evaluate the rate of appendiceal involvement in non-serous mucinous and endometrioid-associated epithelial ovarian cancers. METHODS: The Manitoba Cancer Registry and CancerCare database were used to find all women with non-serous epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer between 1995 and 2011. All patients with an appendectomy were then identified, and their final pathology findings were reviewed. Women who did not receive treatment or lacked follow-up were excluded. RESULTS: We identified 338 patients from 1995-2011 with no prior append

Correlates of suicidality: investigation of a representative sample of Manitoba First Nations adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: We examined individual, friend or family, and community or tribe correlates of suicidality in a representative on-reserve sample of First Nations adolescents. METHODS: Data came from the 2002-2003 Manitoba First Nations Regional Longitudinal Health Survey of Youth. Interviews were conducted with adolescents aged 12 to 17 years (n=1125) from 23 First Nations communities in Manitoba. We used bivariate logistic regression analyses to examine the relationships between a range of factors and lifetime suicidality. We conducted sex-by-correlate interactions for each significant correlate

Home hemodialysis in the remote Canadian north: treatment in Manitoba fly-in communities.

Manitoba has the highest prevalence of ESRD in Canada. Northern Manitoba is a very sparsely settled area with a high proportion of aboriginal ESRD patients. Relocating to urban areas for dialysis is psychosocially and culturally stressful to patients. Delivering dialysis care in a home setting has demonstrated advantages in both clinical, economic, and health related quality of life domains. Establishing home hemodialysis in very remote communities has significant challenges, including poor and inadequate housing, unreliable water supply, limited community medical backup, and poor road access

The incidence and prognosis of Brugada electrocardiographic pattern in the Manitoba Follow-Up Study.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of long-term follow-up data on individuals with asymptomatic Brugada electrocardiographic (ECG) pattern. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence and prognosis of spontaneous Brugada ECG pattern in a prospective cohort. METHODS: The Manitoba Follow-up Study is Canada's longest-running study of cardiovascular disease. Since 1948, a cohort of 3983 healthy aircrew recruits has been followed with routine medical examination, including ECG. Over a 55-year follow-up period, clinical and ECG assessments were performed every three to five years, with yearly contact to

Prevalence of caries among preschool-aged children in a northern Manitoba community.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is a devastating form of dental decay affecting many Canadian children, especially those from northern First Nations communities. ECC is multifactorial in origin, and the notion that the principal etiology is inappropriate feeding modalities is no longer tenable. METHODS: This study was conducted in the community of Garden Hill First Nation, Manitoba, to assess the prevalence of dental decay in young children, to assess risk factors for ECC and to determine the influence of vitamin D supplementation (a modified form of stosstherapy using 100,000 IU vit

Coronary angiography and bypass surgery in Manitoba and the United States: a first comparison.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the appropriateness of use of coronary angiography (CA) and bypass surgery (CABS) in the early 1980s in one Canadian hospital and several American hospitals using explicit case-based criteria. Procedure rates were much lower in Canada during this period. SUBJECTS: Canadian subjects, 502 Manitoba residents undergoing CA at one hospital in 1981-82 were tracked forward to determine whether and when they underwent CABS. CA comparisons were made with 351 Canadian patients aged 55 years or older; 1677 American CA patients aged 65 years or older and were drawn in 1981 from thre

Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) Predicts Fracture in Ankylosing Spondylitis: The Manitoba BMD Registry.

INTRODUCTION: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the spine characterized among other features by spinal boney proliferation, back pain, loss of flexibility, and increased fracture risk. Overlying bone limits the utility of bone mineral density (BMD) by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in the spine. Trabecular bone score (TBS) is a bone texture measurement derived from the spine DXA image that indicates bone quality and fracture risk independent of BMD. METHODOLOGY: Using the Manitoba Bone Density Program database, patients with diagnosis codes for ankylosing spond

Validation of administrative case ascertainment algorithms for chronic childhood arthritis in Manitoba, Canada.

We validated case ascertainment algorithms for juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in the provincial health administrative databases of Manitoba, Canada. A population-based pediatric rheumatology clinical database from April 1st 1980 to March 31st 2012 was used to test case definitions in individuals diagnosed at ≤15 years of age. The case definitions varied the number of diagnosis codes (1, 2, or 3), time frame (1, 2 or 3 years), time between diagnoses (ever, >1 day, or ≥8 weeks), and physician specialty. Positive predictive value (PPV), sensitivity, and specificity with 95% confidence interv

Effectiveness of the quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine against cervical dysplasia in Manitoba, Canada.

PURPOSE: Effectiveness of the quadrivalent human papillomavirus (QHPV) vaccine against cervical dysplasia has not been estimated using population-based individual level data. We assessed the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of the QHPV vaccine against cervical dysplasia using data collected routinely in Manitoba. METHODS: Females ≥ 15 years old who received the QHPV vaccine in Manitoba between September 2006 and April 2010 privately (n = 3,541) were matched on age to up to three nonvaccinated females (n = 9,594). We used Cox regression models to estimate the hazard ratios for three outcomes: atypic

Epidemiology of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in Manitoba, Canada, 1975-92: cycles in incidence.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the yearly incidence of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and to seek correlations between this and cyclic infections occurring in the province of Manitoba, Canada, during the same period. METHODS: An estimate of the incidence of JRA in Manitoba was determined from a disease registry of the Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic, Children's Hospital, Winnipeg. The numbers of confirmed Mycoplasma pneumoniae and viral respiratory infections were determined from annual reports of Cadham Provincial Laboratory. Both facilities provide centralized services for the province. RESULT

Developmental outcomes of preschool children requiring craniosynostosis surgery in Manitoba: a cohort study.

Craniosynostosis is a congenital abnormality resulting in the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures and usually requires surgical correction in the first year of life. While the majority of craniosynostosis cases represent isolated, nonsyndromic defects, approximately 25% are linked to a genetic diagnosis. Craniosynostosis has been associated with developmental delay. Therefore, historically in Manitoba, all children with surgically managed craniosynostosis were referred to the Child Development Clinic (CDC) for developmental assessment. There are currently prolonged wait times for n

Examining Early Childhood Health Outcomes of Children Born Late Preterm in Urban Manitoba.

Objective The late preterm population [34-36 weeks gestational age (GA)] is known to incur increased morbidity in the infancy stage compared to the population born at term (39-41 weeks GA). This study aimed to examine the health of these children during their early childhood years, with specific attention to the role of socioeconomic status. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy, including all live-born children born at 34-36 and 39-41 weeks GA in urban Manitoba between 2000 and 2005 (n = 28,100). Factors influencing H1N1 vaccine behavior among Manitoba Metis in Canada: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: During the first wave of the H1N1 influenza pandemic in 2009, Aboriginal populations in Canada experienced disproportionate rates of infection, particularly in the province of Manitoba. To protect those thought to be most at-risk, health authorities in Manitoba listed all Aboriginal people, including Metis, among those able to receive priority access to the novel vaccine when it first became available. Currently, no studies exist that have investigated the attitudes, influences, and vaccine behaviors among Aboriginal communities in Canada. This paper is the first to systematically

Cloacal exstrophy and related abdominal wall defects in Manitoba: incidence and demographic factors.

A retrospective descriptive study of omphalocele and exstrophic defects of the abdominal wall was carried out in Manitoba to determine the prevalence of these defects, changes in birth incidence with time and their etiologic heterogeneity. The incidence of isolated omphalocele was similar to that reported in other series but the overall incidence of other types of abdominal wall defects was high. Cloacal exstrophy, bladder exstrophy and amnion disruption defects contributed significantly to the number of cases ascertained and emphasized the heterogeneity of abdominal wall defects. There were f
