This review focus on the utility of HRM for the evaluation of gastric motility. The evaluation of gastric motility has clinical implications for the study of a myriad of diseases. Disordered motility represents a spectrum of dysfunction ranging from delayed gastric emptying to abnormally rapid gastric transit. Gastric motility may be measured by a variety of methods with different efficacy and different variables that may be obtained. High-resolution manometry was created and added to the diagnostic armamentarium. The methods and outcomes for the study of proximal motility that may be useful t

Diffuse esophageal spasm (DES) causes chest pain and/or dysphagia in adults. We reviewed charts of 278 subjects 0 to 18 years of age after esophageal manometry to describe the frequency and characteristics of DES in children. Patient diagnoses included normal motility (61%), nonspecific esophageal motility disorder (20%), DES (13%, n=36), and achalasia (4%). Of patients with DES, the most common chief complaint was food refusal in subjects younger than 5 years (14/24, 58%) and chest pain in subjects older than 5 years (4/12, 33%). Comorbid medical conditions, often multiple, existed in 33 subj

BACKGROUND/AIM: Patients with fecal incontinence (FI) have lower anal resting (MRP) and squeeze (MSP) pressure and an impaired sensitivity compared to healthy people. However, whether anorectal manometry (ARM) can separate precisely between health and disease is discussed controversially. The aim was to evaluate the accuracy of ARM in a huge cohort of patients and controls.
METHODS: ARM was obtained in 144 controls and in 559 FI patients. MRP, MSP, and balloon volume at first perception (BVP) and urge sensation (BVU) were determined. Receiver operating curve analysis was used to determine opt

BACKGROUND: High-resolution manometry (HRM) represents a valuable tool for the evaluation of peristalsis in the oesophagus. Due to the wide spacing of the pressure transducers, however, examination of the upper oesophageal sphincter's relaxation period has not proved satisfactory as yet.
DESIGN: A feasibility study was carried out to clarify whether evaluation of the upper oesophageal sphincter's behaviour during swallows is possible using a catheter with very closely spaced pressure transducers.
SETTING: University hospital.
PROCEDURE: Healthy subjects were analysed using a specially devel

BACKGROUND: Restrictive bariatric procedures are frequently considered for patients with morbid obesity, because the weight loss and reduction of comorbidities are good. An impact on gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is common in this population, may be anticipated. Converse results of GERD symptoms are reported for patients after adjustable gastric banding (AGB), sleeve gastrectomy (SG), and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP).
METHODS: A literature search was performed and, with our personal experience, are summarized.
RESULTS: Esophageal manometry is a practical tool to identify

OBJECTIVES: The study explores, by the use of manometry, the frequency and severity of small intestinal involvement in patients with systemic sclerosis, and relates the manometric findings to clinical symptoms, radiology, and some intestinal regulatory peptides.
METHODS: Stationary antroduodeno-jejunal manometry was used to study small bowel involvement in 10 patients with systemic sclerosis and dysmotility of the oesophagus or signs of malabsorption. Measurements were made during fasting, after a meal, and after octreotide administration and were then compared with a sex-matched control grou

BACKGROUND: The interpretation of antroduodenal manometry in children with gastrointestinal motility disorder has been limited by a paucity of data from normal children. The purpose of this study was to define antroduodenal manometry findings in children with no upper gastrointestinal symptoms.
METHODS: We reviewed 260 consecutive antroduodenal manometries and selected 18 studies from subjects aged 2-12 years with no symptoms referable to a gastrointestinal motility disorder involving the stomach and/or the small bowel.
RESULTS: During fasting, phase 3 of the migrating motor complex (MMC) wa

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this prospective study were to determine the bowel function and the anal sphincter function in women with urinary stress incontinence by means of anorectal manometry and to look for manometric variables which could predict the development of surgery demanding genital prolapse after Burch colposuspension.
SUBJECTS: During 1991-1992 twenty-one women with urodynamically proven genuine stress urinary incontinence were consecutively operated upon with the Burch colposuspension. No concomitant prolapse repair surgery was performed. Forty-four healthy subjects without anorecta

BACKGROUND/AIM: Endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) of the sphincter of Oddi (SO) has been accepted as an effective method in extraction of common bile duct stones in postcholecystectomy patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the completeness of the performed ES and observe the post sphincterotomy pancreatic duct sphincter (PDS) activity using endoscopic manometry.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Activity of the sphincter of Oddi was examined in 15 sphincterotomized patients using endoscopic manometry one to 2.5 years after endoscopic sphincterotomy for choledocholithiasis.
RESULTS: In eight p

PURPOSE: Although many studies reported the association between high anal sphincter pressures and anal fissures, one question is open to date: is manometry really necessary for surgical management/does manometry influence the outcome?
METHODS: Between October 1, 1990 and December 31, 1991, lateral sphincterotomy was performed in 177 patients with chronic anal fissure. In all patients the operation was performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthetic. Electromanometry of the anal canal was carried out preoperatively to demonstrate the raised resting pressure profile within the anal

Eleven children with total colonic aganglionosis were studied by esophageal and duodenal manometry. They were separated into two groups: group 1, with ileal involvement, and group 2, without ileal involvement. The results of the digestive motility studies were compared with the extent of ileal involvement of the aganglionosis and with the amount of artificial nutritional support required. All children showed abnormalities on both esophageal and duodenal manometry, suggesting complete digestive tract motility involvement. Recent advances in understanding Hirschsprung's disease and manometrial a

This oesophageal laboratory serves a population of 1.5 million. The study aimed to review referral patterns and assess the cost effectiveness of oesophageal manometry in clinical practice. All 276 consecutive manometry studies performed between 1988 and 1991 were reviewed. Reasons for referral in the 268 first referrals were: dysphagia 50.4%, non-cardiac chest pain 23.1%, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease 14.2%, connective tissue disease 11.2%, and 'other' 1.1%. Manometry was normal in 49.3%, showed achalasia in 17.9%, diffuse oesophageal spasm in 13.4%, connective tissue disease in 7.8%, hype

To investigate whether endoscopy affects sphincter of Oddi (SO) manometry, three patients who had undergone previous cholecystectomy and had a T-tube in situ for drainage were studied. Manometry was performed using a perfused triple lumen manometry catheter (diameter 1.7 mm), which was advanced into the SO lumen through the T-tube. SO motility, baseline pressure, common bile duct pressure and duodenal pressure were monitored before and during endoscopy while the tip of the endoscope was in the mouth, esophagus (upper third, precardial), stomach and duodenum. Endoscopy and even a moderate insuf

The purpose of this study is to analyze the results of anorectal manometry and to evaluate the merits and disadvantages of this technique for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease. Studies were performed in 268 patients with constipation, including 95 cases of Hirschsprung's disease. It is concluded from the results that Hirschsprung's disease can be confidently diagnosed by manometric studies. If the studies are performed carefully with a suitable probe, reliability is over 95%. Manometry is the most useful method to differentiate Hirschsprung's disease from other conditions, such as extrem

The value of anorectal manometry as a diagnostic tool for Hirschsprung's disease (HD) was assessed in 50 children presenting with chronic constipation. Anorectal manometric studies and rectal biopsy were performed on all children. Biopsy specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and serial sections were examined for ganglion cells. Forty-five children had concordant manometric and histologic results, 15 of whom were positive for HD and 30 negative. In five children, the results were discordant. Using histologic aganglionosis as the reference point for the final diagnosis of HD, the ove

Anorectal manometry was performed in 79 patients, aged 2 days to 19 years, who were referred to us because of constipation or symptoms of intestinal obstruction. A definitive diagnosis was obtained in 75 of the 79 patients (95%). Thus, anorectal manometry is a reliable tool in the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease. In the neonatal period, however, a definite diagnosis was possible in only 17 of the 21 neonates (81%). The age at the time of the first examination was 14 +/- 2 days in those with a definite diagnosis and 5 +/- 1 days in those with an indefinite diagnosis (p less than 0.001). If

This study evaluates the endoscopic manometric findings within the sphincter of Oddi (SO) in nine healthy volunteers premedicated with atropine 1 h before and with diazepam during the investigation. We measured the bile duct sphincter in seven persons and the pancreatic duct sphincter in two. A hydraulic capillary infusion system and a triple-lumen catheter were used. In all the SO was identified as a zone (median length, 8 mm) with elevated base-line pressure and superimposed phasic activity. Median values for amplitude was 102.9 mm Hg; base-line pressure, 10 mm Hg; wave duration, 4.8 sec; an

We studied the usefulness of anorectal manometry in excluding Hirschsprung's disease in 25 neonates with signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction. An intraluminal pressure transducer or perfused side-opening catheters were used to evaluate anal tone, anal rhythmicity, and internal sphincter relaxation during rectal distention. Hirschsprung's disease was diagnosed by rectal biopsy in 16% of the neonates. Studies using anorectal manometry gave one false positive and one false negative diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease, which resulted in 75% sensitivity, 95% specificity, and a kappa coeffic
