Selective survival of anaerobic digester microbes after C. bescii pretreatment of manure.

Extremophilic biological pretreatment (EBP) of dairy manure using Caldicellulosiruptor bescii at 75°C dramatically alters the microbial community structure and activity in anaerobic digesters (ADs). This study evaluated microbial abundance and activity in manure, EBP, and ADs at industrial scales using 16S sequencing of rDNA and rRNA. Results revealed that bacterial communities remained largely active and resilient throughout the system, but acetoclastic methanogens were sensitive to EBP treatment and failed to reestablish in ADs. In contrast, hydrogenotrophic methanogens survived EBP and pers

Mitigating Tetracycline antibiotic contamination in chicken manure using ex situ fermentation system.

Excessive use of tetracycline antibiotics in poultry farming results in significant concentrations of these drugs and tetracycline resistance genes (TRGs) in chicken manure, impacting both environmental and human health. Our research represents the first investigation into the removal dynamics of chlortetracycline (CTC) and TRGs in different layers of an ex situ fermentation system (EFS) for chicken waste treatment. By pinpointing and analyzing dominant TRGs-harboring bacteria and their interactions with environmental variables, we've closed an existing knowledge gap. Findings revealed that CT

Swine diets: Impact of carbohydrate sources on manure characteristics and gas emissions.

Swine growers seeking to lower costs and environmental impact have turned to alternative carbohydrate feed sources. A feeding trial was conducted to determine the effect carbohydrate sources have on manure composition and gas emissions. A total of 48 gilts averaging 138 kg BW were fed diets consisting of (a) low fiber (LF) grain, or (b) high fiber (HF) aro-industrial co-product (AICP). The LF diets included corn and soybean meal (CSBM) and barley soybean meal (BSBM). The HF AICP diets were CSBM based and supplemented with one of the following materials: beet pulp; corn distillers dried grains

Manure application facilitated electrokinetic remediation of antibiotic-arsenic co-contaminated paddy soil.

The co-existence of antibiotics and heavy metals in soil with manure application poses high risk to both environment and human health, and thus effective remediation methods are in urgent need. This study investigated the synergistic effects of electrokinetic remediation (EKR) on antibiotic resistance and arsenic (As) in co-contaminated paddy soils. EKR treatments in soil amended with pig manure (EKR-PD) showed better remediation efficiency compared with that without pig manure. In detail, the content of available As and the abundance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) decreased by 25.2 %-

Serious Risk of Tigecycline Resistance in Escherichia coli Isolated from Swine Manure.

The emergence of the plasmid-mediated tigecycline resistance gene tetX family in pig farms has attracted worldwide attention. The use of tetracycline antibiotics in pig farms has a facilitating effect on the prevalence of the tetX family, but the relationship among its presence, expression, and resistance phenotype in resistant bacteria is unknown. In this study, the presence and expression characteristics of tetracycline resistance genes (TRGs) in 89 strains of doxycycline-resistant E. coli (DRE) isolated from pig manure samples from 20 pig farms under low concentrations of doxycycline stress

Swine diets impact manure characteristics and gas emissions: Part I sulfur level.

Sulfur is an essential nutrient for animal growth but is also associated with odor and morbidity of animals from swine operations. A study was conducted to determine the effects of increasing dietary S levels in swine diets on DM, pH, C, N, S, VFA, indole, and phenol concentrations in the manure, and on the emissions of C-, N-, and S-containing gases. A total of 24 gilts averaging 152 kg BW were fed diets containing 0.19, 0.30, 0.43, or 0.64% dietary S, as supplied by CaSO4, for 31 d, with an ADFI of 3.034 kg d-1. High temperatures can effectively degrade residual tetracyclines in chicken manure through composting.

Tetracyclines (TCs) residues in livestock manure are the main origin of environmental tetracyclines contamination and have serious environmental and health risks. This work aimed to examine the effect of temperature on the degradation patterns of TCs antibiotics. Tetracycline (TC), doxycycline (DC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) were all degraded much more quickly in sterilized double distilled H2O (ddH2O) at higher temperatures and lost antibacterial activity after being incubated at 70 °C for 72 h. High pH value enhanced the degradation process of TCs solutions. Degradati

Assessing Nutrient Removal Kinetics in Flushed Manure Using Chlorella vulgaris Biomass Production.

The utilization of dairy wastewater for producing algal biomass is seen as a two-fold opportunity to treat wastewater and produce algae biomass, which can be potentially used for production of biofuels. In animal agriculture system, one of the major waste streams is dairy manure that contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Furthermore, it is produced abundantly in California's dairy industry, as well as many other parts of the world. We hypothesized that flushed manure, wastewater from a dairy farm, can be used as a potential feedstock after pretreatment to grow Chlorella vulgaris bio

Delivery of roxarsone via chicken diet→chicken→chicken manure→soil→rice plant.

Roxarsone (ROX), a widely used feed additive, occurs as itself and its metabolites in animal manure. Rice is prone to accumulate As than other staple food. Four diets with 0, 40, 80 and 120mgROXkg(-1) were fed in chickens, and four chicken manures (CMs) were collected to fertilize rice plants in a soil culture experiment. Linear regression analysis shows that the slopes of As species including 4-hydroxy-phenylarsonic acid, As(V), As(III), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in CM versus dietary ROX were 0.033, 0.314, 0.033, 0.054 and 0.138, respectively. Microbial fuel cell assisted nitrate nitrogen removal using cow manure and soil.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are emerging wastewater treatment systems with a proven potential for denitrification. In this study, we have developed a high-rate denitrifying MFC. The anode consisted of cow manure and fruit waste and the cathode consisted of cow manure and soil. The initial chemical oxygen demand (COD)/nitrate nitrogen (NO3 (-)-N) was varied from 2 to 40 at the cathode while keeping the anode ratio fixed at 100. NO3 (-)-N removal rate of 7.1 ± 0.9 kg NO3 (-)-N/m(3) net cathodic compartment (NCC)/day was achieved at cathode COD/NO3 (-)-N ratio 7.31 with the current density of 190

Green manure addition to soil increases grain zinc concentration in bread wheat.

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is a major problem for many people living on wheat-based diets. Here, we explored whether addition of green manure of red clover and sunflower to a calcareous soil or inoculating a non-indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) strain may increase grain Zn concentration in bread wheat. For this purpose we performed a multifactorial pot experiment, in which the effects of two green manures (red clover, sunflower), ZnSO4 application, soil γ-irradiation (elimination of naturally occurring AMF), and AMF inoculation were tested. Both green manures were labeled with 65Zn rad

Evaluating phosphorus release from biosolids and manure-amended soils under anoxic conditions.

The solubility of P in biosolids and manures has been shown to influence the potential for dissolved P losses in runoff and leachate when these materials are land applied. As a result, some Mid-Atlantic US states have developed P source coefficients (PSCs) to account for differences in P solubility between fertilizers, manures, and biosolids in P risk assessment tools. The reliability of these PSCs has not been evaluated under anoxic conditions, where environmental changes may affect the P solubility of biosolids or manures. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of anoxic condi

Odor generation pattern of swine manure according to the processing form of feed.

Feed has a great influence on the composition of swine manure, which is the principal cause of odor. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to simply change the shape of pig feed and control calories to find a suitable feed form for reducing the smell of swine manure. The experiment was conducted on 15 pigs from July to August 2021, and a total of three measurements were done. Three types of feed were evaluated in this study. The analysis items related to odor of swine manure are complex odor, ammonia, sulfur-based odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the case of complex odor, dil

Determination of antibiotics and other veterinary drugs in the solid phase of pig manure.

The presence of residues of veterinary pharmaceuticals in farm wastewaters such as pig slurry represents a problem that needs to be tackled to avoid further contamination of environmental waters and the development of resistant bacteria. For their monitoring and control, it is necessary the existence of reliable analytical tools. The present paper describes for the first time the development and optimization by statistical experimental design of a specifically designed analytical method for the analysis of 21 veterinary drugs, including 18 antibiotics of several families (β-lactams, tetracycli

Enhancing Extraction and Detection of Veterinary Antibiotics in Solid and Liquid Fractions of Manure.

Analysis of veterinary antibiotics in separated liquid and solid fractions of animal manures is vital because of wide variations in the composition of agriculturally applied manure. Differentiation of antibiotic concentrations is important between liquid and solid manures, as their sorption onto the solid fraction depends on physicochemical properties of each antibiotic and manure composition (e.g., organic content, pH) and because each fraction may be treated and reused differently. Here, an efficient and sensitive method for the analysis of 22 veterinary antibiotics in the liquid and solid f

A simple method to identify areas of environmental risk due to manure application.

The management of swine manure is becoming an important environmental issue in Chile. One option for the final disposal of manure is to use it as a biofertilizer, but this practice could impact the surrounding environment. To assess the potential environmental impacts of the use of swine manure as a biofertilizer, we propose a method to identify zones of environmental risk through indices. The method considers two processes: nutrient runoff and solute leaching, and uses available information about soils, crops and management practices (irrigation, fertilization, and rotation). We applied the m

Establishing a linkage between phosphorus forms in dairy diets, feces, and manures.

Effective manure management to efficiently utilize organic wastes without causing environmental degradation requires a clear understanding of the transformation of P forms from diet to manure. Thus, the objective of this study was to establish quantitative relationships between P forms in diets, feces, and manures collected from U.S. Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic commercial dairy farms. Total P in diets ranged from 3.6 to 5.3 g kg(-1) dry matter, while the feces had higher P than diets (5.7-9.5 g kg(-1)) and manures had lower P (2.5-8.9 g kg(-1)) than feces. The farms with total dietary P of 4

Thermochemical valorisation of sheep manure into bio-oil for asphalt binder modification.

Sheep manure is an abundant biogenic residue with potential as a renewable feedstock for producing value-added materials through thermochemical conversion. This study investigates the valorisation of sheep manure by slow pyrolysis to obtain a bio-oil suitable for use as a bio-based modifier in bituminous binders. Physicochemical characterisation showed that the recovered BO had a pH of 4.8, 2.20 wt% water, and 30.33 wt% oxygen, with ketones dominating the GC-MS profile. The sheep-manure-derived bio-oil was incorporated into a conventional B50/70 bitumen at 3, 6, and 9 wt%, and its performance

Superphosphate-driven low-pH regime reduces greenhouse gas emissions during manure composting.

Additives are widely used to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during manure composting, but whether additive combinations improve mitigation remains unclear. Here, we compared zeolite, ferrous sulfate, superphosphate, and their combinations in cattle manure composting. Superphosphate alone showed the strongest overall mitigation, reducing cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions by 87% and 38%, respectively, relative to the control. The best-performing combined treatment (FL) reduced cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions by 52% and 48%, respectively, indicating that FL performed better for N2O, wher
