Leptospirosis in Tasmanian Devils ( Sarcophilus harrisii ) in Tasmania, 2008-12.

In 2014, we performed a diagnostic study of leptospirosis in Tasmanian devil ( Sarcophilus harrisii ) samples collected between 2008 and 2012 from wild and captive animals. Tasmanian devil populations have been declining because of a facial tumor disease since the 1990s, with ongoing investigations examining potential causative agents. Identifying other causative pathogens that may contribute additively to their decline is important to preserve current and future populations. We tested 81 Tasmanian devil serum samples and two tissue samples using PCR, microscopic agglutination test (MAT), and

Erysipelas in a numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus).

An adult, female numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) was submitted to the Perth Zoo Veterinary Department for postmortem examination in November 2011. This radio-collared wild numbat had been found dead in the Dryandra Woodland, 191 km southeast of Perth, Western Australia. On external examination, the body condition was good. Three ticks (Ixodes spp.) were found on the thoracic region. The external pouch was contaminated with dirt and palpably flocculent, and the nipples oozed a purulent material. Histopathology showed widespread fibrin thrombi containing bacterial microcolonies within interstitia

A novel technique for orchiectomy and scrotal ablation in the sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps).

In this report, we describe a simple, safe, and efficacious technique for orchiectomy and scrotal ablation with the use of a carbon dioxide light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (laser) in sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps). The study population included nine sugar gliders, ages 2-24 mo, presented for orchiectomy. After induction of general anesthesia, orchiectomy and scrotal ablation were performed by severing the scrotal stalk with the laser. All sugar gliders were discharged the same day. Mean anesthesia time was 6.09 +/- 0.94 min. Mean surgery time was 15.11 +/- 8.39 sec,

Hepatic intranuclear glycogen inclusions in western barred bandicoots (Perameles bougainville).

The western barred bandicoot, Perameles bougainville, is an endangered Australian marsupial species. Routine histology of liver samples collected at necropsy from 19 of 20 (95%) western barred bandicoots revealed the sporadic to common occurrence of abnormal hepatocyte nuclei characterized by margination of chromatin and concomitant central pallor. Some abnormal hepatocyte nuclei were mildly to markedly enlarged and irregularly shaped. Periodic acid-Schiff reagent stained 131 of 142 (92%) of these abnormal hepatocyte nuclei. Positive staining was completely eliminated by diastase pretreatment.

Selective retention of fluid digesta in the hindgut of bandicoots and other marsupial caecum fermenters.

Many small hindgut fermenters have a mechanism in the proximal colon that separates fluid and/or bacteria from large particles, and excretes the large particles relatively rapidly. The fluid and/or bacteria are retained in the caecum, which concentrates digestive effort in that region of the hindgut and improves overall digestive efficiency. Previously observed among marsupials only in arboreal marsupials, selective retention of fluid digesta has recently been reported also in bandicoots, small terrestrial omnivores. The separation mechanism operated independently of the nature of the diet, in

Sarcocystis mucosa (Blanchard 1885) Labbé 1889 in unadorned rock wallabies (Petrogale assimilis) and Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus).

Macroscopic cysts of a protozoan parasite were detected in the gastro-intestinal walls of two unadorned rock wallabies (Petrogale assimilis) and 20 Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus). The cysts were located predominantly in the muscularis externa and the submucosa of the forestomach, small intestine and colon and sometimes in the muscularis externa of the oesophagus and caecum. All cysts exhibited similar morphological and ultrastructural characteristics. They were bounded by thick primary cyst walls (containing distinctive bulbous-like protrusions) and were surrounded by collagen fibr

The mammalian yolk sac placenta.

There are three fetal membranes in mammals, namely the yolk sac, allantois and amnion, but only the first two form a placenta. In Monotremata (monotremes), Marsupialia (marsupials) and Placentalia (eutherians), the yolk sac transfers nutrients originating from uterine glandular secretion or the maternal blood. Ontogenetically, the yolk sac of most eutherians loses contact with the peripheral chorion and forms a free splanchnopleuric yolk sac that transfers substances from the exocoelomic cavity, not directly from the endometrium as in marsupials and rodents. This free yolk sac has been preserv

The broad spectrum of Trichinella hosts: from cold- to warm-blooded animals.

In recent years, studies on Trichinella have shown that the host range is wider than previously believed and new Trichinella species and genotypes have been described. Three classes of vertebrates are known to act as hosts, mammals, birds and reptiles, and infected vertebrates have been detected on all continents but Antarctica. Mammals represent the most important hosts and all Trichinella species are able to develop in this vertebrate class. Natural infections with Trichinella have been described in more than 150 mammalian species belonging to 12 orders (i.e., Marsupialia, Insectivora, Edent

Widespread detection of second generation anticoagulant rodenticides in Australian native marsupial carnivores.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) have been detected in non-target wildlife species worldwide but information on exposure in Australian mammals is extremely limited. To address this, we analysed liver tissue from the five largest sized species of native Australian carnivorous and scavenging mammals for all SGARs currently used in Australia. A total of 52 individual animals from five dasyurid species were tested for exposure to ARs with 26 individuals (50 %) testing positive. Eleven individuals (21 %) tested positive for more than one AR compound, and two individuals tested positive for three ty

Three Blind Moles: Molecular Evolutionary Insights on the Tempo and Mode of Convergent Eye Degeneration in Notoryctes typhlops (Southern Marsupial Mole) and Two Chrysochlorids (Golden Moles).

Golden moles (Chrysochloridae) and marsupial moles (Notoryctidae) are textbook examples of convergent evolution. Both taxa are highly adapted to subterranean lifestyles and have powerful limbs for digging through the soil/sand, ears that are adapted for low-frequency hearing, vestigial eyes that are covered by skin and fur, and the absence of optic nerve connections between the eyes and the brain. The eyes of marsupial moles also lack a lens as well as retinal rods and cones. Two hypotheses have been proposed to account for the greater degeneracy of the eyes of marsupial moles than golden mole

Microbial biogeography of the wombat gastrointestinal tract.

Most herbivorous mammals have symbiotic microbes living in their gastrointestinal tracts that help with harvesting energy from recalcitrant plant fibre. The bulk of research into these microorganisms has focused on samples collected from faeces, representing the distal region of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. However, the GI tract in herbivorous mammals is typically long and complex, containing different regions with distinct physico-chemical properties that can structure resident microbial communities. Little work has been done to document GI microbial communities of herbivorous animals at

Placentation in Marsupials.

It is sometimes implied that marsupials are "aplacental," on the presumption that the only mammals that have a placenta are the eponymous "placental" mammals. This misconception has persisted despite the interest in and descriptions of the marsupial placenta, even in Amoroso's definitive chapter. It was also said that marsupials had no maternal recognition of pregnancy and no placental hormone production. In addition, it was thought that genomic imprinting could not exist in marsupials because pregnancy was so short. We now know that none of these ideas have held true with extensive studies ov

Pathological and Immunohistochemical Findings of Disseminated Histiocytic Sarcoma in a Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps).

A 6-year-old intact female sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) had a swelling at the pouch region and died 8 days after presentation. At necropsy, the urinary bladder and abdominal lymph nodes were enlarged and a mass was located in the pericloacal region. Tumour infiltration was also observed in the medial iliac lymph nodes, liver, spleen, small intestine, uterus and left ovary. Histopathologically, the tumours were composed of pleomorphic histiocytes that had round or bizarre nuclei and abundant pale eosinophilic cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, tumour cells were positive for ionized calcium-

Microbiological survey of sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) kept as pets in Italy.

The sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a small, arboreal, nocturnal, gliding mammalian possum belonging to the marsupial infraclass. Exotic marsupials, including sugar gliders, are becoming popular companion pets and, consequently, the risk of potential infections that can be transmitted to humans should be investigated. Data on the role of the sugar glider as a possible carrier of pathogenic and zoonotic bacteria are scarce and fragmentary. Therefore, this study is aimed at evaluating the prevalence of potentially zoonotic bacteria (Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Campylobacter spp., Pse

Novel adenovirus detected in kowari (Dasyuroides byrnei) with pneumonia.

A male kowari (Dasyuroides byrnei) originating from a zoo facility was delivered for post mortem evaluation in Hungary. Acute lobar pneumonia with histopathologic changes resembling an adenovirus (AdV) infection was detected by light microscopic examination. The presence of an AdV was confirmed by obtaining partial sequence data from the adenoviral DNA-dependent DNA-polymerase. Although the exact taxonomic position of this novel marsupial origin virus could not be determined, pairwise identity analyses and phylogenetic calculations revealed that it is distantly related to other members in the
