Police violence among people who inject drugs in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Police violence is a deleterious public health and criminal justice issue that disproportionately affects people who inject drugs (PWID). Studies documenting the prevalence and correlates of physical police violence in this population are rare. The aim of this study was to examine the correlates of past year physical police violence among an urban sample of PWID. METHODS: PWID participating in the 2015 wave of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system in Baltimore City, Maryland, completed a socio-behavioral survey. Multivariable logistic regression was used to detect

Dermocystidium sp. Infection in Blue Ridge Sculpin Captured in Maryland.

Raised pale cysts were observed on Blue Ridge Sculpin Cottus caeruleomentum during stream fish community surveys in Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland. When examined histologically, preserved sculpin exhibited multiple cysts containing spherical endospores with a refractile central body characteristic of Dermocystidium spp. Cysts were not observed on the gills or internally. The portion of the watershed in which affected sculpin were observed contained lower than expected numbers of sculpin, raising concerns about the population effects of this infection. A nearby stream lacked sculpin even thou

Correlating epidemiologic trends with the genotypes causing meningococcal disease, Maryland.

Epidemic meningococcal infection is generally caused by single clones; whether nonepidemic increases in infection are clonal is unknown. We studied the molecular epidemiology of meningococcal infection during a period that the incidence increased in two age groups. Serogroup C and Y meningococcal isolates were analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing. From 1992 to 1999, 96.4% (27/28) of serogroup C isolates from persons 15-24 years of age were in clonal group 1, compared with 65.6% (21/32) of isolates from persons < or =14 years, and 64.3% (9/14) of isolates

Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward skin cancer in Maryland youths.

PURPOSE: To describe the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of 7th-graders in Maryland with respect to sun protection and skin cancer. METHODS: Maryland middle school students ages 10 to 16 years (55% girls, estimated 67% white) from 6 counties completed an in-school questionnaire (n = 2,775) developed by the Coalition for Skin Cancer Prevention in Maryland in 1999 to assess knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors concerning sun exposure and skin cancer. To evaluate for gender and age differences, mean knowledge and attitude scores were compared using Student's t-tests and the prevalence of beha

Mapping Lyme disease incidence for diagnostic and preventive decisions, Maryland.

To support diagnostic and preventive decision making, we analyzed incidence of Lyme disease in Maryland on the zip code level. Areas of high incidence were identified on the Upper Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay and in counties north and east of Baltimore City. These latter foci, especially, are not visible when mapping Lyme disease on the county level.

Outbreak of primary and secondary syphilis--Baltimore City, Maryland, 1995.

From 1993 to 1995, the number of primary and secondary syphilis cases reported in Baltimore City (1990 population: 736,014) increased 97%, from 179 to 352 cases per year (Figure 1). To identify potential reasons for this increase, CDC, in collaboration with the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, analyzed data about primary and secondary syphilis cases during 1992-1995 and about temporal trends in factors that may affect syphilis rates (e.g., partner-notification results, access to medical care, and community illicit-drug use). In a

Opioid-Related Overdose Deaths in Maryland (2018), by Industry and Occupation.

OBJECTIVES: Opioid-related overdose deaths (OROD) increase annually, yet little is known about workplace risk factors. This study assessed differences in OROD rates across industry and occupation in Maryland, in addition to demographic differences within industry and occupation. METHODS: The 2018 State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System was used to compare OROD between industries and occupations. RESULTS: The leading industries in OROD included the following: construction, manufacturing, and transportation and warehousing. Occupational groups were similar: construction and extracti

Police custody deaths in Maryland, USA: an examination of 45 cases.

Previous published research suggests there are a diverse, yet relatively consistent, set of factors present in sudden, unexpected, and initially inexplicable deaths in police custody. This retrospective analysis examines police custodial deaths in Maryland, USA. Police custody death is operationalized to include deaths which occurred suddenly and unexpectedly during police/citizen encounters. Only deaths for which the cause was initially undeterminable are included. Suicidal hanging, police shootings and fatal pursuits are not included. Review of the records at Maryland's Office of the Chief M

An outbreak of acute infectious nonbacterial gastroenteritis in a high school in Maryland.

An outbreak of acute infectious nonbacterial gastroenteritis (AING) occurred in a high school in Maryland in 1984. Thirty-six percent of students surveyed met the case definition of gastroenteritis, as did 24 percent of school employees. Eating lunch in the cafeteria on January 30 was significantly associated with illness. After controlling for other food items consumed during the January 30 lunch, only the sandwiches were significantly associated with illness, but the source of the contamination was not identified. Four of 17 serum pairs from sick students and none of the 8 serum pairs from e

The prevalence of Toxocara species ova in backyards and gardens of Baltimore, Maryland.

Toxocara species ova were found in 16 of 146 (11 per cent) soil samples collected from backyards and gardens of private residences within Baltimore City. The recovery rate of parasite ova was similar for households regardless of their grouping by pet ownership characteristics or the presence of visible animal feces. The findings demonstrate the common occurrence of these eggs in locations likely to be important in the transmission of visceral larva migrans.

Pharmacy-level barriers to implementing expedited partner therapy in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Addressing record high rates of Chlamydia trachomatis incidence in the United States requires the utilization of effective strategies, such as expedited partner therapy, to reduce reinfection and further transmission. Expedited partner therapy, which can be given as a prescription or medication, is a strategy to treat the sexual partners of index patients diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection without prior medical evaluation of the partners. OBJECTIVE: There are multiple steps in the prescription-expedited partner therapy cascade, and we sought to identify pharmacy-level

Maryland Alcohol Sales Tax and Sexually Transmitted Infections: A Natural Experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections are common causes of morbidity and mortality, including infertility and certain types of cancer. Alcohol tax increases may decrease sexually transmitted infection rates overall and differentially across population subgroups by decreasing alcohol consumption in general and prior to sex, thus decreasing sexual risk taking and sexually transmitted infection acquisition. This study investigated the effects of a Maryland increase in alcohol beverage sales tax on statewide gonorrhea and chlamydia rates overall and within age, gender, and race/ethnicity s
