A case of a foreign body tumor resembling fungus ball pre-operatively diagnosed by bronchofiberscopic examination is reported. A 54-year-old male was referred with a complaint of fever. A case of extragonadal germ cell tumor is reported. A 41-year-old man, an elementary school teacher, was referred to our department with left abdominal pain and gynecomastia on September, 1985. A thymic mass was diagnosed by computed tomography in a young male with an anterior mediastinal mass demonstrated by chest X-ray. The association of thymic hyperplasia and thyrotoxicosis is discussed and the importance of CT in the evaluation of anterior mediastinal masses in patients with thyrotoxicosis is emphasized. Micronodular enlargement of the thymus is a common association of Graves' disease in contradistinction to the rare detection of radiologically visible thymic masses in this condition.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) relapse is frequent. Although lung involvement occurs in 85% of patients, endobronchial presentation of the disease is uncommon. We reported a relapsing case of WG presenting as an endobronchial mass. A 56- year-old man present ed with recurrence of WG following 14 months of cyclophosphamide and prednisolone therapy and 36 months of complete remission. A 67-year-old male referred to our hospital for the close examination of abnormal chest X-ray findings. Chest X-ray films showed abnormal shadows in the right lung field. Chest computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the 3 tumors which located in superior, middle and posterior mediastinum. A 21-year-old male was pointed out an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography showed a multilocular cystic mass of 10×4×4 cm in size in the anterior mediastinum. A case of bilateral Castleman tumors in the posterior mediastinum is described. Computed tomography proved to be an accurate, noninvasive method of investigation since it identified not only a large mass but also a smaller mass, which was not visible on standard chest X-ray film. Complete surgical excision was possible. The high attenuation values of both masses demonstrated the hypervascularity of the lesion.

We report a case of a 37-year-old mild asthmatic male presenting with fever, productive cough and chest pain. The chest x-ray showed a multilobular perihilar shadow of the right lung with a mass-like appearance, confirmed by the CT-scan. He was diagnosed with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). ABPA usually manifests as chronic asthma, recurrent pulmonary infiltrates and bronchiectasis. However, it can rarely be seen in patients with mild asthma and with an unusual radiological presentation of a solid mass.

A 62-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of dyspnea. A chest X-ray film showed a massive left pleural effusion. Thoracentesis was done and purulent fluid was found. Streptococcus intermedius was detected in the fluid. Chest drainage and administration of antibiotics were successful, but computed tomography of the chest revealed a mass in the left main bronchus. A 37-year-old woman was admitted with fever and cough. The chest roentgenogram revealed a solitary large round mass in the right lower lung field. Diagnosis was made by transbronchial lung biopsy. There was no evidence of abnormal cell-mediated immunity. The patient made an uneventful recovery and the chest X-ray showed progressive clearing without specific therapy. After 6 months, the mass lesion disappeared. This case suggests that specific therapy may not be necessary for all cases of primary pulmonary cryptococcosis.

Castleman's disease is a rare disorder of the lymphoid tissue. We report the case of a female patient with bilateral otosclerosis, no respiratory symptoms, and pleural effusion discovered as an incidental finding on a chest X-ray. Computed tomography of the chest revealed a mediastinal mass. The biopsy findings demonstrated that it was a plasmacytic variant of Castleman's disease. The patient underwent mediastinal mass resection. This resulted in near-total resolution of the effusion, which remained as a small loculation within the left pleural space.

A 12-year-old boy was admitted to hospital for abdominal pain, vomiting and fever. On physical examination he had râles on the lower right hemithorax without any respiratory complaints. The rising number of traffic accidents increases the number of traumatic ruptures of the diaphragm. Often there are no characteristic symptoms or those of other injuries may dominate. Sometimes a long time elapses before signs of hernia appear. Therefore the mass X-ray screening of the population is very important to demonstrate such cases. Chest X-ray, barium meal and pneumoperitoneum are required to detect a late herniation. Prompt surgical repair will give patients the best chance of recovery, thus avoiding complications which greatly increase the mortality rate.

Although the prevention of habituation-related diseases has become an important topic in Japan, the early detection of cancers such as lung, gastric, and breast cancers is an important issue for X-ray-related imaging modalities. The sonographic appearances of 12 intrathoracic masses in children are presented. Seven out of 12 masses were malignant and presented with opaque hemithorax on chest X-ray. Different types of masses encountered were: Lymphoma, Neuroblastoma, Ewing's sarcoma, metastatic Ewing's sarcoma, Teratocarcinoma, Pseudotumor of the lung, Neuroenteric duplication cyst, Bronchogenic cyst and tubercular mediastinal lymph nodes.
