Uptake of mass drug administration programme for schistosomiasis control in Koome Islands, Central Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis is one of the neglected tropical diseases targeted for elimination in Uganda through the Mass Drug Administration (MDA) programme. Praziquantel has been distributed using community resource persons in fixed sites and house-to-house visits; however the uptake is still below target coverage. In 2011/2012 MDA exercise, uptake stood at 50% yet WHO target coverage is 75% at community level. We assessed the uptake of MDA and the associated factors in Koome Islands, Central Uganda. METHODS: In March 2013, we conducted a mixed methods cross sectional study in 15 randomly

Awareness of health personnel about lymphatic filariasis and mass drug administration in Kerala State.

The mass drug administration programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis with DEC in Kerala was started in 1997, extended to all the 11 endemic districts by 2005. Since the beginning of Mass drug Administration, the drug consumption rate was found to be not satisfactory. The reasons for noncompliance indicated that the community is not fully convinced about the programme. The knowledge of the medical and para medical workers is certainly a factor in the success of implementation of the programme and is vital. To ascertain the knowledge, a study was undertaken and found not satisfactory. Hence

Microplanning improves stakeholders' perceived capacity and engagement to implement lymphatic filariasis mass drug administration.

BACKGROUND: Achieving adequate mass drug administration (MDA) coverage for lymphatic filariasis is challenging. We sought to improve stakeholder engagement in MDA planning and increase subsequent MDA coverage through a series of microplanning workshops. METHODOLOGY: Prior to the 2018 MDA, Haiti's Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) and partners conducted 10 stakeholder microplanning workshops in metropolitan Port-au-Prince. The objectives of the workshops were to identify and address gaps in geographic coverage of supervision areas (SAs); review past MDA performance and propose st

Community views on mass drug administration for soil-transmitted helminths: a qualitative evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are amongst the most common infectious diseases worldwide, with an estimated 24% of the world's population currently infected. Mass drug administration (MDA) is the periodic medicinal treatment, without prior individual diagnosis, of at-risk people living in endemic areas. The World Health Organization currently recommends MDA for STHs. MDA programmes are complex health interventions; achieving adherence is important to their success. Adherence is influenced by the target population's perceptions of the drug, the programme, and those deliv

Perceptions Associated with Noncompliance to Community-Wide Mass Drug Administration for Soil-Transmitted Helminths.

Mass drug administration (MDA) is a key strategy for the control of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). Within MDA programs, poor and non-random compliance threaten successful control of STHs. A case-control study was conducted comparing perceptions among non-compliant participants with compliant participants during a community-wide MDA (cMDA) with albendazole in southern India. Common reasons cited for non-compliance were that the individual was not infected with STH (97.4%), the perception that he/she was healthy (91%), fear of side-effects (12.8%), and dislike of consuming tablets (10.3%). Scabies prevalence after ivermectin-based mass drug administration for lymphatic filariasis, Samoa 2018-2019.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a common skin infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabei mite. Ivermectin, one of three drugs used in mass drug administration (MDA) for lymphatic filariasis, is also effective for treating scabies. Ivermectin-based MDA was first conducted in Samoa in August 2018, with ivermectin being offered to those aged ≥5 years. Here, we report scabies prevalence in Samoa after MDA. METHODS: We conducted household surveys 1.5-3.5 months (Survey 1) and 6-8 months (Survey 2) after the 2018 MDA in 35 primary sampling units. We conducted clinical examination for scabies-like rash and u

The Health and Economic Burdens of Lymphatic Filariasis Prior to Mass Drug Administration Programs.

BACKGROUND: The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) was launched in 2000 with the goal of eliminating lymphatic filariasis (LF) as a public health problem by 2020. Despite considerable progress, the current prevalence is around 60% of the 2000 figure, with the deadline looming a year away. Consequently, there is a continued need for investment in both the mass drug administration (MDA) and morbidity management programs, and this paper aims to demonstrate that need by estimating the health and economic burdens of LF prior to MDA programs starting in GPELF areas. METHODS:

Does mass drug administration for community-based scabies control works? The experience in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: After a scabies outbreak in Amhara Region, Ethiopia in 2015/2016, the Regional Health Bureau performed an extensive Mass Drug Administration (MDA). In May 2017, we collected data to assess the impact of the treatment on the scabies control. METHODOLOGY: We retrieved baseline data from the 2015/16 burden assessment: campaign organization and administration information. We did a community based cross-sectional study using a structured questionnaire on disease and treatment history plus the presence or absence of active scabies in three Zones. We selected households using stratifie

Gender equity in mass drug administration for neglected tropical diseases: data from 16 countries.

BACKGROUND: Gender equity in global health is a target of the Sustainable Development Goals and a requirement of just societies. Substantial progress has been made towards control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) via mass drug administration (MDA). However, little is known about whether MDA coverage is equitable. This study assesses the availability of gender-disaggregated data and whether systematic gender differences in MDA coverage exist. METHODS: Coverage data were analyzed for 4784 district-years in 16 countries from 2012 through 2016. The percentage of districts rep

Dose and formulation of azithromycin in mass drug administration studies: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Azithromycin has been given for tropical infectious diseases such as trachoma and yaws by mass drug administration (MDA). As well as controlling the infectious disease in question, MDA may have a beneficial effect in reducing mortality in young children. However, the dose, formulation, frequency and duration of azithromycin used in certain infectious diseases may vary in different studies, and these differences may have impacts on the effectiveness of azithromycin MDA. Furthermore, whether the dose, formulation, frequency and duration are associated with the effectiveness of azit

Diagnosing risk factors alongside mass drug administration using serial diagnostic tests-which test first?

BACKGROUND: When tests are used in series to determine individual risk factors and infection status in a mass drug administration (MDA), the diagnostics, test order and subsequent treatment decisions (the testing algorithm) affect population-level treatment coverage and cost, but there is no existing framework for evaluating which algorithm optimizes any given outcome. METHODS: We present a mathematical tool (with spreadsheet implementation) to analyse the effect of test ordering, illustrated using treatment for onchocerciasis in an area where high-burden Loa loa co-infections present a known

Mass drug administration in Central Equatoria, South Sudan: results and suggestions for future distributions.

BACKGROUND: South Sudan has rolled out a neglected tropical disease programme, which envisaged deworming campaigns in states endemic for soil transmitted helminth infections and schistosomiasis. METHODS: In 2016, two deworming campaigns targeting school-age children were performed in Central Equatoria. Distribution sites were set up in primary schools, Boma Health Initiative headquarters, health centres and markets. Training, radio adverts and community meetings were performed before the campaigns. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Central Equatoria implemented the first helminth infections and schis

Mass drug administration and the global control of schistosomiasis: successes, limitations and clinical outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Preventive chemotherapy is advocated for the global control and elimination of schistosomiasis. Despite the well known short-term benefits of treating patients for schistosomiasis, the impact of mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns to control the disease in the long term remains unresolved. RECENT FINDINGS: Many studies have advocated the success of MDA programs in order to attract donor funds for elimination efforts but such successes are often short-lived given the drug does not alter the life cycle of the organism or prevent reinfection. Within a matter of months to

Longitudinal analysis of antibody responses to trachoma antigens before and after mass drug administration.

BACKGROUND: Blinding trachoma, caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis, is a neglected tropical disease targeted for elimination by 2020. A major component of the elimination strategy is mass drug administration (MDA) with azithromycin. Currently, program decisions are made based on clinical signs of ocular infection, but we have been investigating the use of antibody responses for post-MDA surveillance. In a previous study, IgG responses were detected in children lacking clinical evidence of trachoma, suggesting that IgG responses represented historical infection. To explore the utility

Impact of mass drug administration on elimination of lymphatic filariasis in Surat city, India.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is one of the major public health problems in some of the endemic districts in India including Surat city of Gujarat province. Historical data reveals that in 1960s, Surat city had infection rate of about 23% and infectivity rate of 1.6%. Since then, Surat city has been reporting the cases of Lymphoedema and hydrocele. Filaria Control Unit was established under National Filaria Control Programme to detect and provide treatment to the cases. Based on the reports of NFCP, Surat City has been considered as LF endemic. During 2004, the country launched campaign of Elimina

Mass administration of an antimalarial drug combining 4-aminoquinoline and 8-aminoquinoline in Tanganyika.

For the eradication of malaria from hyperendemic regions of tropical Africa it is apparent that use may have to be made of antimalarial drugs, administered individually on a census basis, in addition to measures directed against the mosquito. The suppressive activity of existing compounds among individuals having different degrees of immunity is well established, and trials among large groups of people have been conducted with single drugs and with combination of drugs. In the large-scale trials carried out in Tanganyika and described in this paper, such a combination, containing amodiaquine f
