Characterization of Classical Vaccines by Charge Detection Mass Spectrometry.

Vaccines induce immunity by presenting disease antigens through several platforms ranging from individual protein subunits to whole viruses. Due to the large difference in antigen size, the analytical techniques employed for vaccine characterization are often platform-specific. A single, robust analytical technique capable of widespread, cross-platform use would be of great benefit and allow for comparisons across manufacturing processes. One method that spans the antigen mass range is charge detection mass spectrometry (CDMS). CDMS is a single-ion approach where the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z)

Specialist confirmed allergic reactions to COVID-19 mRNA vaccines at a mass vaccination site.

Healthcare providers can play a key role in reaching the target for vaccine uptake through educating the public on the risk may be of severe allergic reactions to COVID-19 vaccines. Thus, it is important to resolve reports in the literature which present conflicting data on vaccine safety. We performed a prospective study of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccinations administered at the Albany Community Vaccination Center. All potential vaccinees to the site were screened for allergic history prior to triage by a board-certified allergist. In the first 14 days of operation, our site vaccinated 14,655 indivi

Mass media coverage and vaccination uptake: evidence from the demand for meningococcal vaccinations in Hungary.

We estimate the effect of mass media coverage of the meningococcal disease on the uptake of meningococcal vaccinations in Hungary. Our analysis is based on administrative county-level data on vaccination purchases linked to indicators of media coverage of the meningococcal disease and to administrative records of disease incidence. Using geographical and time variations in these indicators, our fixed effects estimates indicate a strong positive effect of mass media coverage of the disease on the rate of vaccination with all types of the meningococcal vaccine. At the same time, we do not find e

Immune response to measles vaccine after mass vaccination in Urmia, Islamic Republic of Iran.

We investigated the effectiveness of the mass measles vaccination campaign in Urmia, Islamic Republic of Iran, by examining the measles IgG seroprevalence and antibody response from paired data before and after the campaign. The overall seropositive rate of 624 subjects aged 5-25 years increased 1 year after the mass vaccination (from 53.0% to 72.3%). A rise in antibody titre occurred in all age groups except the 21-25 years group, which had the highest titre before mass vaccination. On logistic regression analysis, only immune status prior to vaccination was significantly associated with the

An implementation science framework to understand low coverage in mass dog rabies vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Dog-mediated human rabies has been greatly reduced in the Americas and eliminated from most high-income countries. However, many countries in Africa, Asia, and parts of Latin America are still struggling with this gruesome disease. Mass dog vaccination, a One Health strategy, is the primary approach for elimination. However, achieving and sustaining appropriate vaccination coverage in endemic areas remains a challenge. Our objective was to apply the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) in Arequipa, Peru as a guiding tool to understand the barriers faced by diff

Guillain-Barre syndrome should be monitored upon mass vaccination against SARS-CoV-2.

In response to the recent pandemic, vaccines have been developed for large-scale immunization. Despite safety and efficacy verified by health authorities, Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) remains a risk of unexpected adverse reactions. Since COVID-19-related GBS cases have largely been reported in Europe, vaccines involving viral genetic materials can potentially trigger GBS, as demonstrated in clinical trials in the Americas. Therefore, medical professionals should be aware of GBS as a potential adverse reaction in SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Consultation with a neurologist may be needed. Neverthele

Vaccination or mass drug administration against schistosomiasis: a hypothetical cost-effectiveness modelling comparison.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease, targeted by the World Health Organization for reduction in morbidity by 2020. It is caused by parasitic flukes that spread through contamination of local water sources. Traditional control focuses on mass drug administration, which kills the majority of adult worms, targeted at school-aged children. However, these drugs do not confer long-term protection and there are concerns over the emergence of drug resistance. The development of a vaccine against schistosomiasis opens the potential for control methods that could generate long-la

Quantifying the impact of mass vaccination programmes on notified cases in the Netherlands.

Vaccination programmes are considered a main contributor to the decline of infectious diseases over the 20th century. In recent years, the national vaccination coverage in the Netherlands has been declining, highlighting the need for continuous monitoring and evaluation of vaccination programmes. Our aim was to quantify the impact of long-standing vaccination programmes on notified cases in the Netherlands. We collected and digitised previously unavailable monthly case notifications of diphtheria, poliomyelitis, mumps and rubella in the Netherlands over the period 1919-2015. Poisson regression

[Quantifying the impact of mass vaccination programmes on notified cases in the Netherlands].

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the impact of long-standing vaccination programmes on notified cases in the Netherlands. DESIGN: Estimates based on model projections of historical morbidity data. METHOD: We collected and digitised previously unavailable monthly case notifications of diphtheria, poliomyelitis, mumps and rubella in the Netherlands over the period 1919-2015. Poisson regression models accounting for seasonality, multi-year cycles, secular trends and auto-correlation were fit to pre-vaccination periods. Cases averted were calculated as the difference between observed and expected cases ba

Cost-Effectiveness of Mass Dog Vaccination Campaigns against Rabies in Flores Island, Indonesia.

A dynamic deterministic simulation model was developed to determine the cost-effectiveness of different mass dog vaccination strategies against rabies in a dog population representative of a typical village on Flores Island. Cost-effectiveness was measured as public cost per averted dog-rabies case. Simulations started with the introduction of one infectious dog into a susceptible dog population of 399 dogs and subsequently ran for a period of 10 years. The base scenario represented a situation without any control intervention. Evaluated vaccination strategies were as follows: annual vaccinati

Sustained low hospitalization rates after four years of rotavirus mass vaccination in Austria.

This hospital based surveillance study evaluates the effects of the rotavirus mass vaccination program, which was initiated in Austria in August 2007. Since then, incidence rates of rotavirus hospitalizations in children <15 years of age have decreased by 70% and 64% in 2010 and 2011 compared to the pre-vaccination era (2001-2005). Incidence rates were highest in children <90 days of age, highlighting the importance of the early start of active rotavirus immunization. In children between 2 and 3.5 years in 2011, who were in the second and third year after vaccination in the universal mass vacc

Improving polio vaccination during supplementary campaigns at areas of mass transit in India.

BACKGROUND: In India, children who are traveling during mass immunization campaigns for polio represent a substantial component of the total target population. These children are not easily accessible to health workers and may thus not receive vaccine. Vaccination activities at mass transit sites (such as major intersections, bus depots and train stations), can increase the proportion of children vaccinated but the effectiveness of these activities, and factors associated with their success, have not been rigorously evaluated. METHODS: We assessed data from polio vaccination activities in Jyo

Use of administrative data to estimate mass vaccination campaign coverage, Burkina Faso, 1999.

Administrative coverage data are commonly used to assess coverage of mass vaccination campaigns. These estimates are obtained by dividing the number of doses administered by the number of children of eligible age, usually at the health district level. This study used data from a cluster survey conducted in each of the 53 Burkina Faso health districts immediately after 1999 the National Immunization Days to assess whether administrative estimates correlated with those obtained through survey and whether the former identified districts that achieved suboptimal coverage as measured by cluster sur

Dengue Incidence Following Mass Vaccination: An Interrupted Time Series Study in Paraná, Brazil.

In southern Brazil, dengue transmission in the state of Paraná has shown a significant increase in the number of cases since the first recorded occurrence in 1995, with more frequent outbreaks in the west, northwest, and north of the state. We evaluated the impact of a campaign of dengue vaccination administered to a fraction of the population in 30 municipalities in the state by conducting a 15-year interrupted time-series ecological study using data obtained from an official Brazilian data register. We modeled dengue incidence using Poisson regression adjusted by covariates (demographic, cli

Applying Lean principles to create a high throughput mass COVID-19 vaccination site.

A high throughput COVID-19 vaccination site was created using Lean principles and tools. Mass-vaccination sites can achieve high output by creating a standard physical design for workspaces and standardised work protocols, and by timing each step in the vaccination process to create a value stream map that can identify and remove all wasteful steps. Reliability of the vaccination process can be assured by creating a visual checklist that monitors the individual steps as well as by building in second checks by downstream personnel. Finally, productivity can be closely monitored by recording the

Co-infection and enterovirus B: post EV-A71 mass vaccination scenario in China.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common child infectious disease caused by more than 20 enterovirus (EV) serotypes. In recent years, enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) has been replaced by Coxsackievirus A6 (CV-A6) to become the predominant serotype. Multiple EV serotypes co-circulate in HFMD epidemics, and this study aimed to investigate the etiological epidemic characteristics of an HFMD outbreak in Kunming, China in 2019. METHODS: The clinical samples of 459 EV-associated HFMD patients in 2019 were used to amplify the VP1 gene region by the three sets of primers and identify ser
