A Pilot Study on the Estimation of Bite Force Using Electromyograms of the Masticatory Muscles.

BACKGROUND: It has not been established how electromyographic (EMG) data of masticatory muscles can estimate bite force (BF) during daily activities at home, such as eating and bruxism, utilising the EMG-BF correlation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between actual BF and BF estimated using corresponding EMG data and additional information on BF and EMG measured on a separate day. METHODS: Participants were 16 volunteers. The unilateral masseteric EMG was recorded during clenching tasks at 10 levels of force up to maximum voluntary clenching (MVC) twice on separa

Understanding the role of osteoarthrosis on electromyographic activity of masticatory muscles and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthrosis is a severe, evolutionary, chronic, and limiting disease that influences on quality of life, as it affects synovial joints and promoted degradation of hyaline articular cartilage. We sought to determine if electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles and quality of life are negatively impacted by osteoarthrosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample of 72 participants between 40 and 70 years old diagnosed with osteoarthrosis were selected. Forty-eight participants met the inclusion criteria of this study and were divided into two distinct groups: with osteoarthros

The role of electrophysiological investigations of masticatory muscles in patients with persistent idiopathic facial pain.

INTRODUCTION: The authors tried to establish whether there is any electrophysiological difference of masticatory muscle activity between patients with persistent idiopathic facial pain (PIFP) and healthy subjects. METHODS: Twenty-eight PIFP patients (6 men and 22 women, mean age 40 years) and 28 normal subjects (12 men and 16 women, mean age 40 years) underwent EMG of temporal and masseter muscles before and after transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS). RESULTS: After TENS stimulation, the mean amplitude difference was found to be smaller than the baseline before TENS in the PIFP p

The effect of psychological stress on masticatory muscle electromyography-a scoping review.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are the second most common reason for orofacial pain with myalgia being the most prevalent diagnosis. Overuse of the masticatory muscles and the presence of stress are both risk factors for myalgia. The extent to which these risk factors interact remains unclear, including whether psychological stress contributes to increased masticatory muscle activity. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify, examine, and map the available literature exploring the relationship between psychological stress and masticatory muscle electromyography (EMG). Pre-clinica

An adolescent case of anterior open bite with masticatory muscle dysfunction.

In adolescence an open bite is likely to be induced by various causes, and most patients with open bite show masticatory muscle dysfunction. The orthodontic correction of an open bite may lead to the recovery of harmonious stomatognathic function. This article reports treatment for a 12-year and 10-month-old female patient with an anterior open bite. She complained of occlusal disturbances due to an anterior open bite. Before the eruption of the upper second molars, she recognized the presence of occlusal contacts between the upper and lower anterior teeth. Before treatment, the activity of th

Masticatory muscle pain: an important indicator of giant cell arteritis.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a polysymptomatic disease which constitutes an ophthalmic emergency because early recognition and management can prevent blindness. There is conflicting information in the literature on the validity, sensitivity, and specificity of various systemic symptoms and signs of GCA. This paper presents a review of our prospective studies on the subject, and our findings are particularly relevant to dentists. We investigated 363 patients in a prospective study. Positive temporal artery biopsy was seen in 106 patients and negative in 257 referred for diagnosis of GCA. Syste

Alterations in Surface Electromyography Are Associated with Subjective Masticatory Muscle Pain.

BACKGROUND: Tenderness of masseters and temporalis can be considered a relevant tool for diagnosis of myo-type craniofacial pain disorders, but a limit of pain score systems is that they are based on subjective pain perception. Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a noninvasive and reliable tool for recording muscle activity. Therefore, we investigated whether a correlation exists between tenderness on masseters and temporalis, assessed by subjective pain scale, and muscles activity, evaluated by sEMG, in patients with painful temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and concurrent tension-type headache

Muscle hardness and masticatory myofascial pain: Assessment and clinical relevance.

The impression of increased muscle hardness in painful muscles is commonly reported in the clinical practice but may be difficult to assess. Therefore, the aim of this review was to present and discuss relevant aspects regarding the assessment of muscle hardness and its association with myofascial temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain. A non-systematic search for studies of muscle hardness assessment in patients with pain-related TMDs was carried out in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and Google Scholar.
