The incidence of acute mastoiditis accounts for 0.004% of acute middle otitis. Nowadays there is a decrease of number of mastoiditis and its complications, but from time to time are seen outbreaks without logical explanation of facts. We report 4 clinical cases of acute mastoiditis complicated with subperiosteal abscess, in children between 8 and 23 month old, seen at our department during the last 3 years, three of them diagnosed in a 4-month term.

The risk of facial nerve injury during mastoid surgery has decreased substantially since the advent of the microscope and the otological drill. However, the facial nerve remains at risk during mastoid surgery with the present day incidence suggested to be one per cent. Despite the severity of this complication there are no recent studies that accurately quantify the incidence or discuss its management. The aims of this study were to identify the risk of facial nerve injury for both the specialist as well as the trainee specialist and to review a management protocol for this complication. Durin

75 ears of 44 patients with secretory otitis and 80 ears of 40 patients with normal ear were observed and reserched. All of the cases were received X-ray examination of mastoid process in Schuller's lateral projection. The size of the air cell system was obtained by planimetry: the method what was originally devised by Diamant. The outline of the mastoid air cell system (MACS) was marked out on the radiograph and then transferred to graph paper where the number of mm2 can be counted directly. According to measuring the planimetric area of MACS. The mastoids were divided into two categories: pn

The first isolated case of agenesis of the mastoid antrum, previously only described in association with the congenital syndromes trisomy 13 and mandibulofacial dysostosis, is reported. The loss of this important surgical landmark may result in disorientation and iatrogenic trauma. The surgeon must be aware of its existence, and where it is suspected the middle fossa dura should be exposed and followed posteriorly until the lateral sinus is encountered.

Primary clinical presentation of malignant lymphoma in the middle ear is rare. One case of African Burkitt's lymphoma involving the mastoid has been reported, but the case herein presented would appear to be the first case of American Burkitt's lymphoma in the literature. American and African varieties have distinct clinical presentations but are histologically identical. Chemotherapy is effective against these aggressive tumors. A 6-year-old boy with the first known case of American Burkitt's lymphoma of the mastoid is presented. He is doing well 23 months from the onset of symptoms.

A large meatoplasty improves the postoperative management of mastoid cavities in providing good ventilation, preventing otorrhoea and allowing ease of inspection for removal of wax. A technique to provide a large meatoplasty is described and the results of 56 operations performed over a 5-year period are reviewed.

Soft tissue mastoid obliteration was used as a means to control a persistent draining mastoid cavity that would not respond to aggressive office management using meticulous cleansing, local antibiotics, and packing. Thirty-three draining cavities which could not be controlled medically, had soft tissue mastoid obliteration performed using a Palva flap. Of the 33 cases obliterated, 31 were successful in obtaining a dry cavity but two still required cleansing every four to six months. Primary reconstruction of the hearing mechanism was performed in 21 of the 33 cases, the others having severe pr

The size of the mastoid penumatization was radiographically examined and planimetrically measured in the patients with Meniere's disease, patients with other sensorineural hearing loss and clinically ear healthy persons. Law projection was used for the radiographical examination. No statistical differences were seen among the three groups. Meniere's disease and the factors which influence the mastoid pneumatization are discussed.

The diagnosis of carcinoma primary in the mastoid bone is usually made while performing a mastoidectomy in an effort to control presumed chronic mastoiditis. The association of chronic infection, serosanguineous otorrhea, and severe otalgia, common warning signs of carcinoma of the middle ear or external auditory canal, may or may not be present with a carcinoma primary in the mastoid bone. If the amount of bony mastoid destruction seen by roentgenography is out of proportion to the degree of clinical infection, malignancy should be strongly suspected. The authors present a case of primary car

As many human organs exist in pairs or have symmetric appearance and loss of symmetry may indicate pathology, symmetry evaluation on medical images is very important and has been routinely performed in diagnosis of diseases and pretreatment evaluation. Therefore, applying symmetry evaluation function to deep learning algorithms in interpreting medical images is essential, especially for the organs that have significant inter-individual variation but bilateral symmetry in a person, such as mastoid air cells. In this study, we developed a deep learning algorithm to detect bilateral mastoid abnor

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of deep learning algorithm trained by single view (anterior-posterior (AP) or lateral view) with that trained by multiple views (both views together) in diagnosis of mastoiditis on mastoid series and compare the diagnostic performance between the algorithm and radiologists.
METHODS: Total 9,988 mastoid series (AP and lateral views) were classified as normal or abnormal (mastoiditis) based on radiographic findings. Among them 792 image sets with temporal bone CT were classified as the gold standard test set and remaining sets w

Increased otitis media rendering acute mastoiditis and mastoid lesions severe or intractable appear to be related to dominant drug-resistant strains and the dissemination of nursery school attendance. Acute mastoiditis involves middle-ear inflammation spreading to the antrum mastoideum and accompanied by subcutaneous abscess. This emergency condition risks progression to subperiosteal abscess and meningitis. Mastoid cavity opacity in computed tomography (CT) scan often occurs with recurrent or intractable otitis media similar to that with mastoiditis. Four of the 8 cases of mastoiditis we trea

PURPOSE: To evaluate the surgical results of revision canal wall down (CWD) surgery for chronically discharging mastoid cavities and to compare the non-obliteration approach to mastoid obliteration with canal wall reconstruction.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. All adult patients (≥ 18 years) who underwent revision surgery for chronically draining mastoid cavities between January 2013 and January 2020 were included. Primary outcome measures included the dry ear rate, complications and postoperative hearing.
RESULTS: 79 ears were included; 56 ears received revision CWD with mas

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate disease control and functional outcomes of mastoid obliteration using bone substitute material in cholesteatoma surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 81 adult patients operated on between March 2014 and March 2023. All patients underwent mastoid obliteration using bone substitute material either during canal wall down cholesteatoma surgery with external auditory canal reconstruction or for rehabilitation of a pre-existing mastoid cavity. Follow-up at 18 months, including otoscopy, audiometry, CT scan and/or MRI, wa

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe the various techniques in performing a tympanomastoidectomy canal wall reconstruction with mastoid obliteration for surgical management of chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma, and to assess the outcomes and complications compared to the more traditional canal wall up and canal wall down surgical techniques. Additionally, the purpose of this review is to highlight the versatility and novelty of this approach in addressing other middle ear pathologies such as glomus tympanicum.
RECENT FINDINGS: As canal wall reconstruction (CWR) with mastoid obliteration (MO) h

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is a saprophytic infection caused by actinomycetes. Actinomycetes is a gram positive, anaerobic, non acid-fast, filamentous bacterium. Although actinomyce is considered as a part of the normal flora, it is rarely seen in middle ear and mastoid cavity.
AIM: is to report a rare case of Actinomycosis infection of the middle ear and mastoid cavity.
CASE REPORT: We presented A 24 years old male arrived to our outpatient department complaining of right-sided otalgia and hearing loss for 8 years, no history of otorreah, vertigo or dizziness. He had a history of right-sid
