Quality of maternal healthcare services in public health facilities of Addis Ababa: Documentation, prenatal and postnatal care, and key determinants of service delivery.

This study assesses the quality of maternal healthcare services in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, focusing on documentation practices, prenatal and postnatal care, and factors influencing high-quality services. A review of 354 maternity medical records from five public hospitals and ten public health centers evaluated the completeness and consistency of maternal healthcare documentation, including patient identification, prenatal care, and postnatal care services. The findings revealed gaps in prenatal care documentation, particularly in maternal medical history, risk factors, and continuity of care.

Socio-economic and geographic equity in maternal health services utilization in Ethiopia: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Addressing disparities in reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health services is crucial in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of universal health coverage. The persistence of social and geographic disparities in maternal health service coverage and utilization poses significant challenges. Ensuring equity in health service access and utilization as part of universal health coverage requires evidence whether these inequities exist. This study aimed to measure socio-economic and geographic equity in coverage and effective coverage of both antenatal care and skilled bi

Explaining changes in educational disparities in competent maternal health care services in urban and rural areas in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Aggregate statistics of maternal health care services have improved in Ethiopia. Nevertheless, the country has one of the lowest Universal Health Coverage (UHC) service coverage indices, with slight improvement between 2000 and 2019. There are disparity studies that focus on a single dimension of inequality. However, studies that combine multiple dimensions of inequality simultaneously may have important policy implications for closing inequalities. In this study, we investigated education inequalities in the receipt of maternal health care services in rural and urban areas separ

Continuity of maternal healthcare services utilisation in Indonesia: analysis of determinants from the Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey.

OBJECTIVE: WHO recommends that every pregnant woman and newborn receive quality care throughout the pregnancy, delivery and postnatal periods. However, Maternal Mortality Ratio in Indonesia for 2015 reached 305 per 100 000 live births, which exceeds the target of Sustainable Development Goals (<70 per 100 000 live births). Receiving at least four times antenatal care (ANC4+) and skilled birth attendant (SBA) during childbirth is crucial for preventing maternal and neonatal deaths. The study aims to assess the determinants of ANC4 +and SBA independently, evaluate the distribution of utilisation

Delivery of maternal health care in Indigenous primary care services: baseline data for an ongoing quality improvement initiative.

BACKGROUND: Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) populations have disproportionately high rates of adverse perinatal outcomes relative to other Australians. Poorer access to good quality maternal health care is a key driver of this disparity. The aim of this study was to describe patterns of delivery of maternity care and service gaps in primary care services in Australian Indigenous communities. METHODS: We undertook a cross-sectional baseline audit for a quality improvement intervention. Medical records of 535 women from 34 Indigenous community health centres in fi

Potential effects of Whatsapp on maternal health services uptake during COVID-19: a cross-sectional study in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic period Health Care Practitioners (HCPs) were seen to facilitate healthcare delivery by using their mobile phones also known as "informal mHealth", especially in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). WhatsApp has become popular in recent years with over 380 million users. It has therefore been identified that the effective use of WhatsApp by HCP for health could positively impact it. This study aims to assess the potential effect of the use of WhatsApp by HCPs on Maternal Health Services (MHS) uptake during the COVID-19 pandemic in four primary healthcare facilities

Access to maternal health services for young women with disabilities in Sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Young women with disabilities (WWDs) face multiple barriers in accessing maternal healthcare services in low-resource settings. Consequently, they are at an increased risk of adverse maternal health outcomes due to young age and having a disability. This review focuses on synthesising evidence regarding the extent of access to maternal healthcare services and the barriers faced by young WWDs in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct a scoping review guided by the updated Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews. A systematic search of MEDLINE, E

The impacts of migration on maternal and child health services utilisation in Sub-Saharan Africa: evidence from Togo.

OBJECTIVES: Togo is experiencing a growing phenomenon of migration and consequently receives remittances from international migrants back to their relatives. Remittances represent about 9.4% of the gross domestic product (GDP), placing Togo in the top 10 recipients of remittances in the world in 2014. Despite the importance of remittances, information on their health outcomes is inadequate, particularly if remittances have a positive impact on the utilisation of maternal and child health services. The aim of this article is to evaluate the impacts of migration on maternal and child health serv

Roles of social workers and community health extension workers in enhancing access to maternal and child health services: reflection on a Nigerian intervention.

Nigeria introduced Maternal and Child Health (MCH) programs to improve access to skilled care in response to persistently poor health outcomes among women and children. While existing assessments often emphasize the role of healthcare workers, the contributions of social workers and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) remain largely overlooked. This study explores the roles played by social workers and CHEWs in enhancing access to MCH services through an intervention project in Anambra State, Nigeria. An exploratory qualitative design was employed, involving interviews with five social

Association between media exposure and maternal health service use in Nepal: A further analysis of Nepal Demographic and Health Survey-2022.

BACKGROUND: Nepal has made incremental progress in improving coverage of maternal health services leading to improved health outcomes. Government and other health sector stakeholders have consistently considered dissemination of educational messages on maternal health through mass media. However, in Nepal's context, the media's influence on the uptake of maternal health services is less known. This study examines the links between media exposure and maternal health service use in Nepal. METHOD: Our analysis is based on the nationally representative Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2

Using fatherhood to engage men in HIV services via maternal, neonatal and child health entry points in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: In South Africa, uptake of HIV services remains lower amongst men compared to women, resulting in poorer clinical outcomes. Several factors contribute to this situation, including stigma, confidentiality concerns, inconvenient clinic operating hours, fear of an HIV-positive test result, and long-waiting times. Additionally, women living with HIV are frequently identified whilst accessing other routine services, particularly antenatal and well-baby care. Novel approaches and strategies are needed to increase men's routine utilization of health services. For many men, fatherhood is

Socioeconomic inequalities in maternal health service utilisation: a case of antenatal care in Nigeria using a decomposition approach.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care (ANC) services are critical for maternal health but Nigeria performs poorly in ANC utilisation compared to other countries in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to assess socioeconomic inequalities in ANC utilisation and the determinants of these inequalities in Nigeria. METHODS: The 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey data with 18,559 women was used for analysis. The paper used concentration curves and indices for different measures of ANC utilisation (no ANC visit, 1-3 ANC visits, at least four ANC visits, and the number of ANC visits). A positive (or neg
