Evaluation of factors related to maternal anxiety during pregnancy among women referred to Tabriz primary care centers.

BACKGROUND: Maternal anxiety during pregnancy is sometimes considered a normal mechanism to overcome the mother's mental preoccupation with having a child. However, stress and anxiety might become a medical condition, becoming so severe as to affect the mother's mental health. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate factors related to maternal anxiety during pregnancy in women referring to prenatal primary care centers in Tabriz. METHODS: The target population in the present cross-sectional study was the pregnant women referring to primary care centers affiliated with Tabriz Univers

Early socioaffective programming in infants: Maternal perinatal psychosocial stress and developmental profiles in a longitudinal Argentine study.

Maternal perinatal stress is a well-documented risk factor for adverse child outcomes, but limited evidence is available from Latin America. This study investigated associations between maternal psychosocial stress during pregnancy and postpartum and infant socioaffective development at 3 months of age in Argentina. The sample included 198 mother-infant dyads recruited from two public health centers. Mothers completed standardized assessments of anxiety, depression, perceived stress, and pregnancy-specific distress during the second and third trimesters and 3 months postpartum. Infant socioemo

Early diagnosis at the CDH clinic.

In 1978, 488 of 8,211 registered newborn babies in the Haifa area were referred to us for suspected congenital dislocation of the hip. The findings were as follows: normal, 53%; justifying further follow-up, 40.5%; subluxation, 4% (19 cases); and dislocation, 2.5% (12 cases). The infants with subluxation or dislocation were not older than six months. Treatment of dislocation included: open reduction, 1; closed reduction under general anesthesia, 4; and reduction and treatment by abduction splints, 7. After this treatment, all hips were stable. Abduction splints were used in the 19 subluxation

Developmental Pathways to BPD-Related Features in Adolescence: Infancy to Age 15.

The self-damaging behaviors central to borderline personality disorder (BPD) become prominent in adolescence. Current developmental theories cite both early family processes and childhood dysregulation as contributors to BPD, but longitudinal data from infancy are rare. Using the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development database (SECCYD; N = 1,364), we examined path models to evaluate parent and child contributors from infancy/preschool, middle childhood, and adolescence to adolescent BPD-related features. In addition, per

Post-Partum Depression Effect on Child Health and Development.

While studies have shown the disastrous effects of post-partum depression (PPD) on children's behaviors, there is relatively lack of reliable data in Asian countries. This study examined the relative significance of maternal PPD in children's developmental disabilities at age four. In a longitudinal study design (2009), 1801 pregnant women attending in primary health centers of Mazandaran province in the north of Iran provided self-reports of depression from two to twelve postpartum weeks using Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Approximately four years later, the women experiencing

Consequences of maternal complications in women's lives in the first postpartum year: a prospective cohort study.

Maternal complications are common during and following childbirth. However, little information is available on the psychological, social and economic consequences of maternal complications on women's lives, especially in a rural setting. A prospective cohort study was conducted in southern Rajasthan, India, among rural women who had a severe or less-severe, or no complication at the time of delivery or in the immediate postpartum period. In total, 1,542 women, representing 93% of all women who delivered in the field area over a 15-month period and were examined in the first week postpartum by

Promoting secure attachment, maternal mood and child health in a vulnerable population: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of an early home-based intervention on the quality of maternal-infant attachment, maternal mood and child health parameters in a cohort of vulnerable families. METHODOLOGY: A total of 181 families were recruited to the study in the immediate postnatal period on the basis of a self report questionnaire relating to known family vulnerability factors. Families were assigned randomly to intervention (90), or control (91) groups. The intervention group received a series of home visits from a child health nurse (weekly to 6 weeks, fortnightly to 3 months), with a

High rates of anxiety detected in mothers of children with inconclusive cystic fibrosis screening results.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to assess postpartum depression, anxiety, and depression in mothers of children with an inconclusive diagnosis after a positive cystic fibrosis (CF) newborn screening (NBS), known as cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR)-related metabolic syndrome (CRMS) or CF screen positive, inconclusive diagnosis (CFSPID). There is limited information on the prognosis and on the impact of this designation on maternal mental health. METHODS: Mothers of children with CRMS/CFSPID and CF identified by NBS were recruited from two centers in California. Maternal me

BACKGROUND: The study aims to report the short-term outcome for the mothers and newborns for all pregnancies accepted for birth at maternity homes in Norway. METHODS: A 2-year prospective study of all mothers in labor in maternity homes, i.e. all births including women and newborns transferred to hospital intra partum or the first week post partum. RESULTS: The study included 1275 women who started labor in the maternity homes in Norway; 1% of all births in Norway during this period. Of those who started labor in a maternity home, 1217 (95.5%) also delivered there while 58 (4.5%) women were

Prevalence and barriers to HIV testing among mothers at a tertiary care hospital in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Barriers to HIV testing in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: One-third of all new HIV infections in Cambodia are estimated to be due to mother-to-child transmission. Although the Ministry of Health adopted a policy of provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling (PITC), nearly a quarter of pregnant mothers were not tested in 2007. Greater acceptance of HIV testing is a challenge despite Cambodia's adoption of the PITC policy. METHODS: A hospital-based quantitative and cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess the prevalence of and barriers to HIV testing among mothers after delivery at the National Maternal and Child Health Center in

Sexual and reproductive health in overweight and obesity: Aims and visions for integrated research approaches.

Overweight and obesity increasingly affect women in their reproductive phase, during family planning, pregnancy, breastfeeding and the postpartum period. Overweight and obesity are associated with impaired sexual and reproductive health, including increased rates of infertility, pregnancy complications, and reduced breastfeeding rates. Furthermore, maternal overweight and obesity are associated with long-term negative health consequences for the child, such as an increased risk for respiratory and metabolic disease. With the Junior Research Center for Reproduction: Sexual and Reproductive Heal

Prenatal maternal mood instability and child externalizing problems: An ecological momentary assessment study.

This study examines whether exposure to affect fluctuations during fetal development have implications for child psychopathology. To evaluate maternal mood instability, participants (N = 154) completed Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) eight times per day across three days at 15-, 25-, and 35-weeks' gestation, and then at two months postpartum. The EMA measured depressive symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale), anxiety (Profile of Mood States), and stress (Perceived Stress Scale). Mood instability was quantified by calculating root mean square of successive difference

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the impact of the Improving Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Survival (IMNCS) project, which is being implemented by BRAC in rural communities in Bangladesh. METHODS: Four districts received program intervention i.e. trained community health workers to deliver essential maternal, neonatal, and child healthcare and nutrition services while two districts were treated as comparison group. A quasi-experimental study design (compared before-and-after) was undertaken. Baseline survey was conducted in 2008 among 7200 women followed by end line in 2012 among 4800 women with simi
