Approximate numerical abilities and mathematics: Insight from correlational and experimental training studies.

Humans have the ability to nonverbally represent the approximate numerosity of sets of objects. The cognitive system that supports this ability, often referred to as the approximate number system (ANS), is present in early infancy and continues to develop in precision over the life span. It has been proposed that the ANS forms a foundation for uniquely human symbolic number and mathematics learning. Recent work has brought two types of evidence to bear on the relationship between the ANS and human mathematics: correlational studies showing individual differences in approximate numerical abilit

Time processing impairments in preschoolers at risk of developing difficulties in mathematics.

The occurrence of time processing problems in individuals with Development Dyscalculia (DD) has favored the view of a general magnitude system devoted to both numerical and temporal information. Yet, this scenario has been partially challenged by studies indicating that time difficulties can be attributed to poor calculation or counting skills, which can support reasoning on time in school-aged children and adults. Here, we tackle this debate by exploring the performance of young children before they fully develop the symbolic number system. Preschoolers at risk of developing DD were compared

Who Is At Risk for Persistent Mathematics Difficulties in the United States?

We analyzed two nationally representative, longitudinal data sets of U.S. children to identify risk factors for persistent mathematics difficulties (PMD). Results indicated that children from low socioeconomic households are at elevated risk of PMD at 48 and 60 months of age, as are children with cognitive delays, identified developmental delays or disabilities, and vocabulary difficulties. In contrast, children attending preschool either in Head Start or non-Head Start classrooms are at initially lower risk of PMD. Kindergarten-aged children experiencing either low socioeconomic status or mat

The Effect of Tutoring With Nonstandard Equations for Students With Mathematics Difficulty.

Students often misinterpret the equal sign (=) as operational instead of relational. Research indicates misinterpretation of the equal sign occurs because students receive relatively little exposure to equations that promote relational understanding of the equal sign. No study, however, has examined effects of nonstandard equations on the equation solving and equal-sign understanding of students with mathematics difficulty (MD). In the present study, second-grade students with MD (n = 51) were randomly assigned to standard equations tutoring, combined tutoring (standard and nonstandard equatio

Five-year growth trajectories of kindergarten children with learning difficulties in mathematics.

The investigators used data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K) to estimate whether and to what extent the timing and persistence of mathematics difficulties (MD) in kindergarten predicted children's first through fifth grade math growth trajectories. Results indicated that children persistently displaying MD (i.e., those experiencing MD in both fall and spring of kindergarten) had the lowest subsequent growth rates, children with MD in spring only had the second-lowest growth rates, and children with MD in the fall only (and who had thus recovered from the

Mathematics education and students with learning disabilities: introduction to the special series.

The prevalence of students with mathematics learning disabilities has triggered an interest among special education researchers and practitioners in developing an understanding of the needs of this group of students, and in identifying effective instructional programming to foster their mathematical performance during the school years and into adulthood. Research into the characteristics of students with mathematics learning disabilities is being approached from different perspectives, including developmental, neurological and neuropsychological, and educational. This diversity helps us develo

Mathematical problem-solving profiles of students with mathematics disabilities with and without comorbid reading disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to describe the mathematical problem-solving profiles of students with mathematics disabilities (MD) with and without comorbid reading disabilities (RD). The disability status of fourth-grade students was verified through testing (n = 18 MD; n = 22 MD + RD). Then a hierarchy of mathematics problem-solving tasks was administered. The results demonstrated large deficits for both groups; however, the differences between students with MD and those with MD + RD were mediated by the level of problem solving (arithmetic story problems vs. complex story problems vs. real-

Autonomy-Supportive Classroom Climate: Its Multilevel Structure and Associations with Students' Mathematics Achievement.

BACKGROUND: Autonomy-supportive climate has consistently been associated with positive student outcomes. Although Self-Determination Theory and Motivational Climate Theory conceptualize it as a multilevel construct, research has mainly examined autonomy support from an individual student perspective. The present study investigated autonomy-supportive climate as both a classroom-level construct and an individual microclimate component, examining its associations with mathematics achievement. METHODS: Data came from a representative sample of 26,564 Italian 10th-grade students. Doubly Latent Mu

The disgrace of geometry: Newton on postulates and the mechanical foundations of mathematics.

The essay explores Newton's assertion that geometry is grounded in mechanics, and demonstrates that this claim arises from his understanding of mathematical postulates. Several of Newton's unpublished works on the foundations of mathematics are examined, highlighting the various systems of postulates he developed throughout his lifetime as the foundations of geometry. Newton's research is placed in the broader context of seventeenth-century studies on axiomatics, particularly in relation to the works of mathematicians Viète and van Schooten. The article presents an inferential interpretation o

Language Predictors of Word-Problem Performance Among Third-Grade Students With Mathematics Difficulty.

We examined how generalized and mathematics-specific language skills predicted the word-problem performance of students with mathematics difficulty. Participants were 325 third-grade students in the southwestern United States who performed at or below the 25th percentile on a word-problem measure. We assessed generalized language skills in word reading, passage comprehension, and vocabulary knowledge. In addition, we measured mathematics-specific vocabulary knowledge. To explore variation within the mathematics-difficulty population, we utilized unconditional quantile regression to determine h

Evaluating the impact of short educational videos on the cortical networks for mathematics.

Many teaching websites, such as the Khan Academy, propose vivid videos illustrating a mathematical concept. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we asked whether watching such a video suffices to rapidly change the brain networks for mathematical knowledge. We capitalized on the finding that, when judging the truth of short spoken statements, distinct semantic regions activate depending on whether the statements bear on mathematical knowledge or on other domains of semantic knowledge. Here, participants answered such questions before and after watching a lively 5-min video, which taugh

Using Direct Observation to Document "Practice-Based Evidence" of Evidence-Based Mathematics Instruction.

Implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) is paramount to students' development of mathematics proficiency. This study investigated "practice-based evidence" of interventionists' actual use of explicit mathematics instruction, a well-established EBP. Specifically, this study analyzed direct observation data collected in a federally funded efficacy trial involving a Tier 2 first-grade mathematics intervention to examine whether the quantity and quality of explicit mathematics instruction was associated with the mathematics outcomes of 470 first-grade students with or at risk for mathema

Use of cognitive correction training improves learning for children with mathematics learning disability.

Children with normal intelligence may experience varying degrees of mathematics learning disabilities (MD). This study aims to conduct training to improve the brain's cognitive ability for mathematics learning by focusing on two important mathematical cognitive abilities. This was a prospective study of 70 children in grades 2-5 from two primary schools in Changzhou and with MD enrolled from June 2015 to February 2017. The children were randomized 1:1 to the training and control groups. A training cycle included 40 sessions (5/weeks) (30 min each session). The efficacy of learning was assessed

Longitudinal mediators of achievement in mathematics and reading in typical and atypical development.

Longitudinal studies of neurodevelopmental disorders that are diagnosed at or before birth and are associated with specific learning difficulties at school-age provide one method for investigating developmental precursors of later-emerging academic disabilities. Spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with particular problems in mathematics, in contrast to well-developed word reading. Children with SBM (n=30) and typically developing children (n=35) were used to determine whether cognitive abilities measured at 36 and 60 months of age mediated the effect

Mathematics deficiencies in children with very low birth weight or very preterm birth.

Children with very low birth weight (VLBW, <1500 g) or very preterm birth (VPTB, <32 weeks gestational age or GA) have more mathematics disabilities or deficiencies (MD) and higher rates of mathematics learning disabilities (MLD) than normal birth weight term-born children (NBW, >2500 g and >36 weeks GA). MD are found even in children without global disorders in cognition or neurosensory status and when IQ is controlled, and they are associated with other learning problems and weaknesses in perceptual motor abilities and executive function. ICD2Vec: Mathematical representation of diseases.

BACKGROUND: The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes represent the global standard for reporting disease conditions. The current ICD codes connote direct human-defined relationships among diseases in a hierarchical tree structure. Representing the ICD codes as mathematical vectors helps to capture nonlinear relationships in medical ontologies across diseases. METHODS: We propose a universally applicable framework called "ICD2Vec" designed to provide mathematical representations of diseases by encoding corresponding information. First, we present the arithmetical and semantic r

Mathematical Blueprint of a Mitral Valve.

Mathematical modeling tries to simplify understanding and proposes a fundamental mechanism that governs the motion and function of a complex biological system such as a mitral valve (MV) motion which represents a dynamic interplay between papillary muscle (PM) position in the context of left ventricular (LV) shape dynamics. Current therapeutic strategies to intervene on the MV may not have exploited these relationships due to lack of understanding of the interactions. We present a MV 3D mathematical model characterized by LV shape dynamics to understand fundamental working principles of ventri
