Increased salt preference in adult offspring raised by mother rats consuming excessive amounts of salt and water.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of an early high-salt environment on the maternal and the young offspring physiology and on the adult offspring sodium appetite. Twenty-five-adult female Wistar rats were pseudorandomly divided into two groups. Twelve animals underwent a partial ligature of their abdominal aorta (PAL). Once polydipsia and sodium appetite (tested by measuring water and a 2.7% NaCl intakes) developed, they were mated. The other 13 rats (SHAM) were sham-operated and also mated. Throughout pregnancy and lactation, water and salt intake of PAL rats was consistently an

Assortative fertilization and selection at larval stage in the mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis.

Assortative mating (prezygotic isolation) and reduced hybrid fitness (postzygotic isolation) are typically invoked to explain the stability of hybrid zones. In the tension zone model, these factors work in opposition to migration, which promotes genetic homogeneity. Many marine animals migrate over long distances through a planktonic larval stage. Therefore, strong reproductive isolation is needed to maintain stable marine hybrid zones. However, surprisingly little is known about mating preferences and hybrid fitness in marine organisms. Smooth-shelled mussels (Mytilus spp.) form a well-known

A genetically explicit model of speciation by sensory drive within a continuous population in aquatic environments.

BACKGROUND: The sensory drive hypothesis predicts that divergent sensory adaptation in different habitats may lead to premating isolation upon secondary contact of populations. Speciation by sensory drive has traditionally been treated as a special case of speciation as a byproduct of adaptation to divergent environments in geographically isolated populations. However, if habitats are heterogeneous, local adaptation in the sensory systems may cause the emergence of reproductively isolated species from a single unstructured population. In polychromatic fishes, visual sensitivity might become ad

The effect of developmental temperature and inbreeding on sexual and reproductive traits of female guppies.

Global temperatures are rising and inbreeding is increasingly common in wild populations as habitats become fragmented and population sizes shrink. There is extensive research on how inbreeding or elevated temperatures affect animal performance, but little is known about how these 2 factors interact to affect sexually selected behavior and reproductive traits. We ran a 2 × 2 experiment to investigate how developmental temperature (26 °C or 30 °C) and inbreeding (outbreeding or full-sibling mating) affect female guppies (Poecilia reticulata). We reciprocally cross-bred full-siblings to create i

Effects of diisopentyl phthalate exposure during gestation and lactation on hormone-dependent behaviours and hormone receptor expression in rats.

Phthalates are found in different plastic materials, such as packaging, toys and medical devices. Some of these compounds are endocrine disruptors, comprising substances that are able to induce multiple hormonal disturbances and downstream developmental effects, including the disruption of androgen-dependent differentiation of the male reproductive tract and changes in pathways that regulate hormone-dependent behaviours. In a previous study, metabolites of diisopentyl phthalate (DiPeP), a potent anti-androgenic phthalate, were found in the urine of Brazilian pregnant women. Therefore, the pres

Unraveling the hierarchical structure of posture and muscle activity changes during mating of Caenorhabditis elegans.

One goal of neurobiology is to explain how decision-making in neuromuscular circuits produces behaviors. However, two obstacles complicate such efforts: individual behavioral variability and the challenge of simultaneously assessing multiple neuronal activities during behavior. Here, we circumvent these obstacles by analyzing whole animal behavior from a library of Caenorhabditis elegans male mating recordings. The copulating males express the GCaMP calcium sensor in the muscles, allowing simultaneous recording of posture and muscle activities. Our library contains wild type and males with sel

Evolution of the ABPA subunit of androgen-binding protein expressed in the submaxillary glands in New and Old World rodent taxa.

The salivary androgen-binding proteins (ABPs) are members of the secretoglobin gene family present in mammals. Each ABP is a heterodimer assembled as an ABPA subunit encoded by an Abpa gene and linked by disulfide bridges to an ABPBG subunit encoded by an Abpbg gene. The ABP dimers are secreted into the saliva of mice and then transferred to the pelage after grooming and subsequently to the environment allowing an animal to mark territory with a biochemical signal. The putative role of the mouse salivary ABPs is that of pheromones mediating mate selection resulting in assortative mating in the

Molecular characterization of firefly nuptial gifts: a multi-omics approach sheds light on postcopulatory sexual selection.

Postcopulatory sexual selection is recognized as a key driver of reproductive trait evolution, including the machinery required to produce endogenous nuptial gifts. Despite the importance of such gifts, the molecular composition of the non-gametic components of male ejaculates and their interactions with female reproductive tracts remain poorly understood. During mating, male Photinus fireflies transfer to females a spermatophore gift manufactured by multiple reproductive glands. Here we combined transcriptomics of both male and female reproductive glands with proteomics and metabolomics to be

The Genetic Basis of Baculum Size and Shape Variation in Mice.

The rapid divergence of male genitalia is a preeminent evolutionary pattern. This rapid divergence is especially striking in the baculum, a bone that occurs in the penis of many mammalian species. Closely related species often display diverse baculum morphology where no other morphological differences can be discerned. While this fundamental pattern of evolution has been appreciated at the level of gross morphology, nearly nothing is known about the genetic basis of size and shape divergence. Quantifying the genetic basis of baculum size and shape variation has been difficult because these str

Peripheral anosmia attenuates female-enhanced aggression in male rats.

It is well established that male rats with prior access to sexually active females show enhanced offensive aggression toward unfamiliar male intruders. The present study assessed the importance of the sense of smell for this facilitatory effect. It was found in 2 independent experiments that anosmia, induced peripherally by surgically removing the olfactory epithelium and cutting the olfactory nerves, reduced baseline levels of offensive aggression and significantly attenuated the female-enhanced aggression effect. It was also found that sexual performance of anosmic rats was context-dependent

Validation and refinement of existing methods for timed mating and early pregnancy detection in guinea pigs.

Biomedical research increasingly focuses on early developmental stages to better understand homeostasis, environmental influences, and disease origins, an approach summarised by the concept of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease. However, studying these processes in humans is challenging, highlighting the need for suitable animal models that closely mimic human pregnancy and early development. Historically, guinea pigs were the preferred model for specific research areas and are now regaining attention in embryological studies due to their physiological similarities to humans. We p

Kisspeptin signaling and nNOS neurons in the VMHvl modulate lordosis behavior but not mate preference in female mice.

It was recently shown that kisspeptin neurons in the anteroventral periventricular area (AVPV) orchestrate female sexual behavior, including lordosis behavior and mate preference. A potential target of AVPV kisspeptin signaling could be neurons expressing the neuronal form of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the ventrolateral part of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMHvl). Therefore, in the present study, we further refined the role of the VHMvl in female sexual behavior. Adult female mice received a bilateral cannula aimed at the VMHvl. A single injection with kisspeptin (Kp-10) or SNAP/BAY, a

Improving reproductive success in captive marmosets through active female choice.

The recent upsurge in the use of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) as a desirable model for high priority biomedical research has challenged local and global suppliers struggling to provide sufficient numbers of marmosets for large scale projects. Scientific research laboratories are increasingly establishing institutional breeding colonies, in part to combat the resulting shortage and high cost of commercially available animals, and in part to have maximum control over research lines involving reproduction and development. For such laboratories, efficient marmoset breeding can be challeng

FIELD TECHNIQUES FOR VASECTOMY IN BLACK HOWLER MONKEYS (ALOUATTA PIGRA).

Three adult black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) were vasectomized for the purpose of population control. Two different surgical approaches (inguinal and pelvic) were used to vasectomize the animals under general anesthesia. One monkey was vasectomized with a pelvic approach, and the other two monkeys were vasectomized with an inguinal approach. The inguinal approach was minimally invasive and proved to be an effective field procedure, utilizing minimal surgical equipment with a mean operative time of 35 min. The inguinal approach allowed for better visualization of the spermatic cord, which

Perceptual adaptation to facial asymmetries.

Humans and other animals are highly sensitive to deviations from bilateral symmetry and prefer symmetric mates. Fluctuating asymmetries (FAs) are random deviations from perfect symmetry that can result from developmental instability. Human perceptions of facial asymmetry are driven by FAs and insensitive to directional asymmetries (DAs), which have a consistent direction of bias (e.g., left side always larger) across the population and are unrelated to developmental stability. We hypothesized that perceptual adaptation may filter out DAs and provide a proximate mechanism for this perceptual fo

Toward a Mechanistic Understanding of Color Vision in Insects.

Many visual animals exploit spectral information for seeking food and mates, for identifying preys and predators, and for navigation. Animals use chromatic information in two ways. "True color vision," the ability to discriminate visual stimuli on the basis of their spectral content independent of brightness, is thought to play an important role in object identification. In contrast, "wavelength-specific behavior," which is strongly dependent on brightness, often associates with foraging, navigation, and other species-specific needs. Among animals capable of chromatic vision, insects, with the

Canine desexing attitudes and practices of Australian veterinarians: A cross-sectional survey.

Canine desexing is one of the most common small animal surgical procedures in Australia, yet little is known about current practices. This study characterised attitudes, practitioner recommendations and surgical practices for routine canine desexing among Australian veterinarians using an online cross-sectional survey (n = 107). Respondent demographics were broadly comparable to the 2023/2024 Australian Veterinary Workforce Survey, suggesting appropriate representation. Most veterinarians (93.6%) recommended routine desexing, with orchiectomy and ovariohysterectomy being the predominant surgic

An investigation into the potential effects of infrapopulation structure and other sources of sampling error, on population genetic studies of the transmission of Schistosoma japonicum (Trematoda: Digenea).

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma japonicum remains a major challenge to human and animal health. Earlier microsatellite-based studies reported possible definitive-host-specific private alleles within S. japonicum, opening the possibility that different definitive hosts might harbour different parasite strains. Previous investigations have also detected near-identical multilocus genotypes in populations of adult worms - possibly the result of mutations occurring during the asexual (intramolluscan) phase of clonal expansion. Research has also revealed extensive deviations from Hardy-Weinberg Proportions

Testing for links between face color and age, dominance status, parity, weight, and intestinal nematode infection in a sample of female Japanese macaques.

Studies of the role of secondary sexual ornaments in mate choice tend to focus on colorful traits in males, but females of many animal species express colorful ornamentation too. Among non-human primates, investigations into the role of female secondary sexual traits as indicators of life history characteristics, reproductive success, and health status have mostly focused on sexual swellings, whereas only few studies have been conducted on the role of facial color. Recent studies on rhesus macaques and mandrills suggested that female ornamentation might provide information about female life hi

Combined Cardiopulmonary Assessments Using Impedance and Digital Implants in Conscious Freely Moving Cynomolgus Monkeys, Beagle Dogs, and Göttingen Minipigs: Pharmacological Characterization and Social Housing Effects.

Respiratory monitoring, using impedance with implanted telemetry in socially housed animals, was not possible until the recent development of digital signal transmission. The objective of this study was to evaluate digital telemetry monitoring of cardiopulmonary parameters (respiratory rate, tidal volume, minute volume, electrocardiography (DII), systemic arterial blood pressure, physical activity, and body temperature) in conscious, single-housed, non-rodent species commonly used in toxicology studies following administration of positive/negative controls (saline, dexmedetomidine, morphine, a
