Narrow-band ultraviolet-B stimulates proliferation and migration of cultured melanocytes.

Narrow-band ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation is an effective treatment for vitiligo vulgaris. However, the mechanisms of narrow-band UVB in inducing repigmentation of vitiligo lesions are not thoroughly clarified. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effects of narrow-band UVB irradiation on melanocyte proliferation and migration in vitro. Our results showed that the cell counts as well as [3H]thymidine uptake of melanocytes were significantly enhanced by narrow-band UVB-irradiated keratinocyte supernatants. In these supernatants, a significant increase in basic fibroblast growth facto

Clinical and dermoscopic findings of benign longitudinal melanonychia due to melanocytic activation differ by skin type and predict likelihood of nail matrix biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal melanonychia (LM) is a common dermatologic finding in clinical practice with a broad differential diagnosis. Melanocytic activation is the most common LM etiology. OBJECTIVE: To investigate clinical and dermoscopic differences of benign LM based on Fitzpatrick skin type and in biopsied versus nonbiopsied patients. METHODS: A 10-year retrospective cohort of 248 benign LM cases at Weill Cornell Dermatology was identified and analyzed. RESULTS: Darker-skinned versus lighter-skinned patients had higher band width percentage (P = .0125), had lower band brightness (P < .0

Co-doping of Ho-Yb ion pairs modulating the up-conversion luminescence properties of fluoride phosphors under 1550 nm excitation.

In this study, up-conversion fluoride phosphors NaY1-x-y-m-nMxF4:Er3+y,Ho3+m,Yb3+n (M = Lu3+/Gd3+) were synthesized by a low-temperature combustion method. The optimal ionic ratios in the matrix lattice were also determined by a controlled variable method. It was confirmed that doping a small amount of Ho3+ ions and Yb3+ ions in the Er-doped sample matrix lattice can form a mutual sensitizer and a transient energy capture center to enhance the sample's up-conversion luminescence under excitation at the 1550 nm band, respectively. It was also found that the lanthanide ion introduced can modulat

Classifying the structural heterogeneity of peritoneal adhesions by histopathological extracellular matrix characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal adhesions are a common complication following abdominal surgery and contribute substantially to long-termmorbidity, including bowel obstruction, chronic pain, and infertility. Their diverse clinical presentation, ranging from thin strands todense obstructive bands, suggests multiple underlying pathomechanisms. We propose a histopathological framework for classifyingperitoneal adhesions based on extracellular matrix characteristics, providing a microscopic correlation to clinical heterogeneity andsupporting translational research on adhesion prevention. METHODS: In this

Composition and peptide maps of cross-linked human choriogonadotropin-receptor complexes on porcine granulosa cells.

Radioiodinated human choriogonadotropin was affinity-cross-linked with a cleavable (nondisulfide) homobifunctional reagent to the hormone receptor on porcine granulosa cells and the solubilized sample was electrophoresed. Cross-linked samples revealed four additional bands of slower electrophoretic mobility in addition to the hormone alpha, beta, and alpha beta dimer bands. The four bands corresponded to masses of 68, 74, 102, and 136 kDa whereas the alpha beta dimer band corresponded to 50 kDa. Formation of the four bands requires the 125I-hormone to bind specifically to the receptor with sub

Altered gelatinolytic activities in an apparent unilateral keratoconus patient. A case report.

Recent studies have suggested that one possible cause of keratoconus involves increased degradation of the corneal extracellular matrix. Most studies have examined corneas from patients with bilateral, sporadic keratoconus. In this report, both corneas from a 70-year-old man with a history of familial keratoconus and clinical signs of unilateral keratoconus were examined for gelatinase activity. Our results demonstrated a qualitative (three additional activity bands of 88, 92, and 100 kDa molecular weights) and quantitative differences (an apparent increase in overall amounts) in the gelatinol

New diagnostic EEG markers of the Alzheimer's disease using visibility graph.

A new chaos-wavelet approach is presented for electroencephalogram (EEG)-based diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) employing a recently developed concept in graph theory, visibility graph (VG). The approach is based on the research ideology that nonlinear features may not reveal differences between AD and control group in the band-limited EEG, but may represent noticeable differences in certain sub-bands. Hence, complexity of EEGs is computed using the VGs of EEGs and EEG sub-bands produced by wavelet decomposition. Two methods are employed for computation of complexity of the VGs: one based

Extracellular matrix in regenerating rat sciatic nerve: a comparative study on the localization of laminin, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans, including versican.

Using a glial hyaluronate-binding protein as a probe, monoclonal antibodies against versican and ABC digested chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans, and polyclonal antibodies against laminin, we localized these extracellular matrix (ECM) components in the endoneurium of the adult rat sciatic nerve. During Wallerian degeneration caused by nerve crushing, the staining pattern of these ECM elements changed dramatically. In the first stages and up to 5 days after injury, the tubular endoneurial structures remained the same as in control nerves. Ten days after crush, the bands of Büngner formed by prol

Detection and identification of diagnostic Histoplasma capsulatum precipitates by counterelectrophoresis.

Studies were carried out to develop and evaluate a counterelectrophoresis (CEP) technique for the rapid and specific identification of the diagnostically important histoplasmosis H and M precipitin bands. Well-defined and centrally located precipitin bands were produced by using a discontinuous buffer system and a gel matrix composed of agarose and ionagar no. 2. A template was devised which allowed the selective identification of the H and M precipitins. Comparative evaluations were performed with the microimmunodiffusion (ID) and complement fixation tests. In 52 sera from persons with histop

A new chondrodystrophic mutant in mice. Electron microscopy of normal and abnormal chondrogenesis.

The occurrence of a new mutation affecting cartilage and bone in mice is reported. The gene is lethal, shows autosomal recessive inheritance, and has high penetrance. It is not allelic to shorthead and probably not to phocomelia or achondroplasia. It results in a foreshortened face, cleft palate, defective trachea, and shortened long bones with flared metaphyses. Chondrocytes of epiphyseal cartilage from the mutant are not aligned in columns, and there is a decrease in the usual staining of the cartilage matrix. Electron microscope observations show large, wide collagen fibrils with "native" b

Dendrimers made of porphyrin cores and carbazole chromophores as peripheral units. Absorption spectra, luminescence properties, and oxidation behavior.

Luminescent and redox-active porphyrin-based dendrimers of first and second generation have been synthesized, and their absorption spectra, photophysical properties, and oxidation behavior have been investigated, together with those of the corresponding aldehyde carbazole precursors. All the dendrimers contain a porphyrin core and carbazole-based chromophores as branches. The structural formulas of the new species are represented in Figures 1 and 2, with the corresponding schematizations. The absorption spectra of the aldehyde carbazole precursors A1-A6 in dichloromethane exhibit intense trans

Engineering highly-aligned three-dimensional (3D) cardiac constructs for enhanced myocardial infarction repair.

Native myocardium exhibits well-organized cellular orientations and highly vascularized architectures, which is important for tissue survival and synchronic contraction activities. Mimicking such structural organizations to engineer functional cardiac constructs is a promising approach to treat myocardial infarctionin vivo. Here we propose a novel strategy to engineer highly-aligned three-dimensional (3D) cardiac constructs by co-culturing cardiomyocytes and rat aortic endothelial cells (RAECs) along with native extracellular matrix-derived fibrin within electrohydrodynamic-printed microfibrou

Tailoring CuO/Polyaniline Nanocomposites for Optoelectronic Applications: Synthesis, Characterization, and Performance Analysis.

This research focuses on creating CuO/PANI nanocomposite films by electrodepositing copper oxide nanoparticles into a polyaniline matrix on ITO substrates. The CuO nanoparticle content was adjusted between 7% and 21%. These nanocomposites are promising for various applications, such as optoelectronic devices, gas sensors, electromagnetic interference shielding, and electrochromic devices. We utilized UV-Vis spectroscopy to examine the nanocomposites' interaction with light, allowing us to ascertain their refractive indices and absorption coefficients. The Scherrer formula facilitated the deter

Increased concentration of pro-matrix metalloproteinase 9 in term fetal membranes overlying the cervix before labor: implications for membrane remodeling and rupture.

OBJECTIVES: Regional structural alterations that develop before labor are important in the mechanisms of both physiologic and pathologic membrane rupture, because they are also detected in preterm prelabor rupture of the fetal membranes, the most common cause of preterm birth (as great as 60%). Matrix metalloproteinases are located in the fetal membranes and are the main mediators of extracellular matrix degradation. The objective of this study was to examine whether gelatinases (matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9) could be involved in the development of these regional structural changes seen a

Dynamics of enamel formation in the rat incisor tooth.

Enamel formation was reviewed by morphology and radioautography in rat incisors. Labeled amino acids and sugars were used as matrix precursors whereas labeled calcium monitored mineral deposition. All ameloblasts synthesize organic material, but only cells in the zone of secretion release labeled matrix. The pattern of matrix deposition indicates that enamel rods are elaborated by Tomes' processes within cavities formed by interrod partitions. The latter are elaborated by cytoplasmic projections from adjacent ameloblasts. Initially-labeled matrix is added as a band near the cells. With time th

Glucocorticoid-induced alterations in collagen of neonatal mouse condylar cartilage.

Neonatal mice were treated with a single dose of triamcinolone hexacetonide, a long-acting synthetic analogue of cortisol, and their mandibular condyles were studied ultrastructurally ten days thereafter. A pronounced decrease in the number and size of matrix granules (proteoglycans) was found in the cartilaginous matrix of triamcinolone-treated condyles. In contrast, a marked increase concomitant with significant structural changes was noted in collagen fibrils. An obvious enhancement of collagen fibrillogenesis was noticed in the pre-mineralizing extracellular matrix. Atypical, wider than no

Surface enhancement Raman scattering of tautomeric thiobarbituric acid. Natural bond orbitals and B3LYP/6-311+G (d, p) assignments of the Fourier Infrared and Fourier Raman Spectra.

Surface enhancement Raman scattering (SERS) of two tautomer of thiobarbituric acid was obtained using silver and gold nanoparticles. Large band enhancement in the region of the ν(C=S), ν(C=C), δ(CH2), and δ(CNH) vibrational modes was found. Natural bond analysis of the tautomer species revealed expressive values of charge transfer, principally from lone pair electron orbitals of the S, N, and O atoms. Complete vibrational assignment was done for the two tautomers using the B3LYP/6-311+G (d, p) procedure, band deconvolution analysis, and from a rigorous interpretation of the normal modes matrix

A multi-band centroid contrastive reconstruction fusion network for motor imagery electroencephalogram signal decoding.

Motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interface (BCI) assist users in establishing direct communication between their brain and external devices by decoding the movement intention of human electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. However, cerebral cortical potentials are highly rhythmic and sub-band features, different experimental situations and subjects have different categories of semantic information in specific sample target spaces. Feature fusion can lead to more discriminative features, but simple fusion of features from different embedding spaces leading to the model global loss is not easily c

Classification of Visually Induced Motion Sickness Based on Phase-Locked Value Functional Connectivity Matrix and CNN-LSTM.

To effectively detect motion sickness induced by virtual reality environments, we developed a classification model specifically designed for visually induced motion sickness, employing a phase-locked value (PLV) functional connectivity matrix and a CNN-LSTM architecture. This model addresses the shortcomings of traditional machine learning algorithms, particularly their limited capability in handling nonlinear data. We constructed PLV-based functional connectivity matrices and network topology maps across six different frequency bands using EEG data from 25 participants. Our analysis indicated

Dermatology (Beau's Lines) and Forensic Pathology (Harris Lines and Linear Enamel Hypoplasia) Signs of Growth Arrest: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Dermatology encompasses the evaluation and management of localized conditions that affect the nail plate, including trauma, primary dermatoses involving the nail bed and nail matrix, and systemic disorders with manifestations that impact the nail unit. In addition to traumatic events that can alter the nail unit, localized conditions such as periungual dermatitis and infections, as well as generalized diseases, can affect the nail matrix, resulting in temporary growth arrest of the nail plate. This can present as a groove (Beau's line) in the nail plate that progressively grows out as the nail
