Evaluation of the maxillofacial morphological characteristics of Apert syndrome infants.

Apert syndrome is a rare craniosynostosis syndrome characterized by irregular craniosynostosis, midface hypoplasia, and syndactyly of the hands and feet. Previous studies analyzed individuals with Apert syndrome and reported some facial and intraoral features caused by severe maxillary hypoplasia. However, these studies were performed by analyzing both individuals who had and those had not received a palate repair surgery, which had a high impact on the maxillary growth and occlusion. To highlight the intrinsic facial and intraoral features of Apert syndrome, five Japanese individuals with Ape

Multidiscipline Therapy: Cervicofacial Vascular Anomaly With Macroglossia, Maxillofacial Deformity.

Vascular malformations are congenital vascular developmental defects that usually grow slowly and persist throughout life. Venous malformations (VMs) are the most prevalent type of vascular anomalies, representing roughly 70% of all cases. VMs can cause significant pain, impaired mobility, disrupt organ function, and in severe cases, become life-threatening. Intralesional sclerotherapy after tracheotomy is a safe and effective treatment for extensive VMs involving oropharyngeal areas of the head and neck. For the first time, we present a life-threatening case in which tracheostomy was not feas

Orofacial Deformities in 3 Related Rhesus Monkeys (Macaca mulatta) Resembling Human Binder's Syndrome.

Binder's syndrome is a rare congenital deformity characterized by midface hypoplasia, particularly around the nasomaxillary area. Genetic etiology or developmental failure caused by prenatal exposure to teratological agents has been considered. In this article, we present 3 related rhesus monkeys born with orofacial deformities similar to those found in infants with the Binder phenotype. For the first time, a primate biomodel for this condition is presented. The clinical description and association with management and environmental factors are discussed. These findings reinforce the knowledge

Bilateral oblique facial clefts, rudimentary eyes and hydrocephalus in an aborted equine foetus.

Knowledge of congenital malformations and their causes in horses is generally sparse. Such conditions require more scientific attention to improve their diagnostics and inform prevention strategies. Here, a unique syndrome of bilateral oblique facial clefts (meloschisis), rudimentary eyes and hydrocephalus is reported in an equine foetus spontaneously aborted at gestation day 224. The cause of abortion was considered to be intrauterine death caused by umbilical cord torsions and subsequent compromised blood flow, but the aetiology of the malformation could not be determined. A detailed history

Artificial intelligence for maxillofacial prosthodontics: A technological shift in craniofacial rehabilitation- a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) transforms dentistry and holds considerable promise for maxillofacial prosthodontics (MFP). Applications in imaging, computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), and additive manufacturing are improving diagnosis, treatment planning, and prosthetic rehabilitation for patients with craniofacial abnormalities. Despite advances in materials and digital workflows, challenges remain in achieving optimal accuracy, efficiency, and customisation in prosthetic design. The integration of AI in maxillofacial prosthodontics is still in its early stages. Cur

[How I explore … a dento-maxillofacial dysmorphosis].

Dento-maxillofacial dysmorphoses represent a considerable area of maxillofacial surgery. Their incidence has constantly been on the rise since the beginning of the century. This can be explained by variations in the food and society habits. We will first discuss the various causes (congenital and environnemental) and the pathophysiology of these disorders. Then, we will separate them according to the skeletal and Angle's classifications. We will examine the predictive criteria of these dysmorphoses from the youngest age and consider their clinical and cephalometrical diagnosis. We will envisage

[Genetics and the dento-facial complex].

Recently mutations in single genes have been found to cause dentofacial deviations like hypodontia, cleft lip and palate, as well as some craniofacial malformation syndromes like Aperts/Crouzon syndromes, cleidocranial dysostosis... These findings may lead to an overestimation and oversimplification of the role of genes in our daily life. The "one gene, one disease" principle has been applied too often, while most complex human characteristics are determined by a large number of genes, each leading to an increased liability for a certain condition. Whether this condition is expressed or not de

[Orthodontic treatment for adults].

The number of adults undergoing orthodontic treatment has increased strongly and the average age that adult patients undergo orthodontic treatment increased steadily although 3/4 is still younger than 27 years. In adults the facial skeletal pattern can only be changed in a very confined way, consequently in case of an abnormal skeletal pattern one has to choose between a combined orthodontic-surgical approach (which is the case in 18% of the patients) and a compromised orthodontic treatment, if necessary combined with other disciplines. It is still controversial whether tooth movement in adult

China experts' consensus on preventive and interceptive orthodontic treatments of malocclusions of children.

Malocclusion is one of the three most common oral diseases reported by World Health Organization(WHO). In China, its incidence rate is rising. Malocclusion seriously affects the dental and maxillofacial function, facial appearance and growth development of nearly 260 million children in China, and what is more, it affects their physical and mental health development. Malocclusion occurrence is related to genetic and environmental factors. Early treatment of malocclusion can create a good dental and maxillofacial development environment, correct abnormal growth and control the adverse effects o

Surgical Correction of Post-traumatic Residual Deformity of the Mandible: A Case Report.

Mandibular fractures are the most common trauma cases that we often come across in our day-to-day practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Various factors can lead to deformities and make those cases more challenging, which includes a delay in surgical treatment, resulting in non-union or malunion of the fracture site causing occlusal disturbances and functional abnormalities in the temporomandibular joint.

[Application of 3 dimensional computer tomography to maxillofacial surgery].

Three dimensional CT examination is a recently developed technique. Nine patients suffering from traumatic and developmental abnormalities were examined with this new method and the results were satisfying. Applying this technique, we routinely obtain a set of equal spaced, nonoverlapping, high resolution CT scans of the maxillofacial deformities. It provided a condition for facilitating surgical planning and improving quantitative of postoperation evaluation.
