Introduction: Following mass traumatic events, greater exposure to traditional media like television (TV) about the event is associated with higher burden of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, we know little about how social media exposure, combined with other media sources, shapes the population burden of PTSD following mass traumatic events. Materials and Methods: We built a microsimulation of 1,18,000 agents that was demographically comparable to the population of Parkland and Coral Springs, Florida that experienced the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018. We parametr

BACKGROUND: Social media have become one of the primary sources of nutrition-related information among young adults; however, the widespread promotion of restrictive diets may contribute to unhealthy eating behaviors and body image concerns. The aim of this study was to examine the association between exposure to restrictive diet-related content on social media and eating-behavior dimensions measured using the TFEQ-13 among women aged 18-49 years in Poland. Additionally, the study descriptively assessed participants' restrictive dietary practices and their self-reported perceptions regarding t

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related media exposure is strongly associated with adolescents' psychosocial factors, but the mechanisms underlying drinking intention and potential sex differences remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study examined the associations between alcohol-related media exposure and rural Thai adolescents' drinking intention, focusing on psychosocial mediators-perceived drinking norms, attitudes, and perceived behavioral control-and the moderating role of biological sex.
METHODS: A total of 474 rural Thai adolescents (mean [±SD] age: 14.54 ± 0.92; 50.63% male) from 8

The rapid integration of electronic media into daily life has transformed early childhood experiences worldwide. While digital technology offers opportunities for learning, communication, and entertainment, concerns persist regarding its impact on neurodevelopment during the critical early years of life. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the association between electronic media exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children under 5 years of age. The literature search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library identified 21 original studies, 12

INTRODUCTION: Through previous studies, Chinese college students are known to be prone to alcohol consumption, which can lead to health-risk behaviors such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems. However, little is known about how popular social media platforms (e.g., short-form video applications) can positively impact their willingness to reduce alcohol consumption. This study was guided by the theory of optimistic bias; we investigated the direct, mediated, and moderating effects of exposure to anti-alcohol consumption short-form videos and shor

BACKGROUND: Rapid technological developments enable the immediate transmission of armed conflict events through a variety of media channels, inducing mass anxiety, fear, and helplessness. Youth are particularly vulnerable and face new challenges as a result of this exposure. The effects of media exposure to such events on psychological distress and post-traumatic symptoms were examined.
METHODS: A total of 161 participants aged 13-18 years completed a questionnaire battery that included measures of media exposure to armed conflict events, previous direct exposure to armed conflict events, psy

Digital media availability has surged over the past decade. Because of a lack of comprehensive measurement tools, this rapid growth in access to digital media is accompanied by a scarcity of research examining the family media context and sociocognitive outcomes. There is also little cross-cultural research in families with young children. Modern media are mobile, interactive, and often short in duration, making them difficult to remember when caregivers respond to surveys about media use. The Comprehensive Assessment of Family Media Exposure (CAFE) Consortium has developed a novel tool to mea

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging infectious disease that spreads around the world. The lack of effective antiviral drugs and vaccines, along with the relatively high mortality rate and high contagiousness, has raised strong public concerns over COVID-19, especially for people living in the most severely affected areas. This study aimed to clarify the influencing factors for the anxiety level among the Chinese people during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a particular focus on the media exposure to different COVID-19 information.
METHODS: A total of 4991 responden

BACKGROUND: Digital media frequently contains positive portrayals of alcohol content, which has been shown to be associated with alcohol-related cognitions and behaviors. Because youth are heavy media consumers and have access to unsupervised, repeat viewing of media content on their personal mobile devices, it is critical to understand the frequency of encountering alcohol content in adolescents' daily lives and how adolescents engage with the content.
OBJECTIVE: This paper outlines the study protocol for examining adolescents' exposure to alcohol-related content in digital media within thei

BACKGROUND: Violent media is the most consumed type of media in Lebanon. Many studies have linked exposure to media violence to increased aggression and psychological distress. As Lebanon is going through socio-political turmoil, we aimed to [1] explore the correlates of aggression (i.e., sociodemographic factors, BMI, loneliness, social competence, and psychological distress) in a sample of Lebanese adults from the general population, and [2] to examine the mediating effect of psychological distress in the association between exposure to media violence and aggression in this sample.

Millions of people witnessed early, repeated television coverage of the September 11 (9/11), 2001, terrorist attacks and were subsequently exposed to graphic media images of the Iraq War. In the present study, we examined psychological- and physical-health impacts of exposure to these collective traumas. A U.S. national sample (N = 2,189) completed Web-based surveys 1 to 3 weeks after 9/11; a subsample (n = 1,322) also completed surveys at the initiation of the Iraq War. These surveys measured media exposure and acute stress responses. Posttraumatic stress symptoms related to 9/11 and physicia

Alcohol harm continues to present a public health priority. Whilst we know that a relationship exists between exposure to content and alcohol initiation and use in young people, the mechanism behind this effect is not well understood. Using the social identity approach as a meaning-making lens, a systematic review of the qualitative literature and meta-synthesis was conducted using Medline (all years), Embase (all years), and PsycINFO (all years). The inclusion criteria included studies which qualitatively explored the effect of exposure to content or marketing in young people (aged < 26). Twe

Turkey experienced two devastating earthquakes, which resulted in more than 50,000 deaths and millions of injured and homeless individuals. The negative influence of direct exposure to trauma has been proven, but the impact of indirect exposure remains unclear. In this study, we focused on indirect types of trauma exposure: the loss of someone in the earthquake and the exposure to disaster media. We aimed to explore the influence of these dimensions on psychological states, including earthquake trauma severity, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression, anxiety, hopelessness a

Writing tasks that encourage an appreciation of body functionality can improve women's body image and may buffer against negative effects of idealised media exposure. However, no research has examined whether these tasks can serve as a coping strategy after idealised exposure. To this end, young adult women (N = 217, Mage = 21.63) recruited from an Australian university and general community completed a writing task after idealised media exposure, with state body image measures taken at baseline, post-exposure, and post-task. Women were randomly allocated to one of three writing tasks and aske

AIM: This study assessed the association between exposure to alcohol adverts on social media and alcohol use among university students in Uganda since alcohol consumption has severe effects, especially in countries with weak regulations for alcohol marketing.
METHODS: In total, 996 undergraduate students at Makerere University responded to a questionnaire assessing exposure to alcohol advertising on social media (independent variable) and alcohol use (dependent variable). Adjusted multinomial logistic regression was used to analyse data.
RESULTS: One in ten students reported hazardous drinki

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent social media experiences are diverse and may vary based on developmental stage. The associations that these experiences have with subjective well-being may also vary in that different associations may emerge when examining relations at the immediate within-person level versus the general person-level.
METHODS: The current study utilized an ecological momentary assessment design to examine how exposure to three types of social media content (uplifting, humorous, hateful) related to affect and state self-esteem three times per day for 14 days. These associations were ex

BACKGROUND: Despite introducing different policies and initiatives, India is recognized as one of the global players in the tobacco epidemic race. Our study explores the association between tobacco consumption and mass media exposure among the Indian population, considering the contextual factors affecting the clustering at the community and state levels.
METHODS: Using two waves of the India Human Development Survey (IHDS) conducted in 2005 and 2012 for 16,661 individuals, the present study explores the association of mass media exposure and tobacco consumption in the short-term and the long

OBJECTIVES: As the rate of cannabis use increases, it is expected that more individuals will develop a Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD). Relatively little is known, however, about the psychosocial correlates of CUDs among racial/ethnic minority women. This study, therefore, examined correlates of CUDs among a cohort of adult African American and Puerto Rican women.
METHODS: The sample consisted of African American and Puerto Rican female participants (N = 343), who have been followed by the Harlem Longitudinal Development Study from mean age 14 to mean age 39 years. The bivariate and multivariate
