Medical prescription of heroin--a review.

There are many problems associated with injection drug use, problems that affect both the users themselves as well as those close to them and the society in which they live. Whether through complications associated with drug use (multiple infections, mental health problems, etc) or through the consequences on those close to them and on society (family dysfunction, crime, etc), the costs of illegal drug use are considerably greater than the costs of treating drug users.

Program for reviewing returned medications.

A program for reviewing medication doses returned to the pharmacy department is described. Discrepancies concerning returned doses at a teaching hospital led to the creation of a returned-dose log sheet. A pharmacist enters the patient's name, medication, and administration schedule and forwards a copy to the charge nurse on the patient's unit, who records the reasons for the return. A pharmacist then uses the form to resolve any discrepancies in the pharmacy records and follows up if necessary. Monthly summaries of the forms are prepared. After a pilot phase and educational feedback, the rate

Evaluation of medication-related problems in medication reviews: a comparative perspective.

BACKGROUND: The elderly population is at a high risk of medication misadventure, with many studies reporting a high number of medication-related problems (MRPs) in this group. OBJECTIVE: To quantify MRPs in residential facilities routinely reviewed by pharmacists and compare these results with other published findings. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included deidentified residents' health and medication data from 6 aged-care facilities. Regular medication reviews had been conducted over 20 years in these facilities. Two hundred ninety-six pharmacist intervention report forms were comple

Panic disorder and medical comorbidity: a review of the medical and psychiatric literature.

Epidemiological studies have found significant comorbidity between panic disorder and many medical illnesses. The authors discuss the accumulating psychiatric and medical literature addressing comorbidity between panic disorder and cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological illnesses. Cardiac symptoms such as chest pain and palpitations, as well as certain disorders such as mitral valve prolapse, hypertension, and cardiomyopathy, share significant comorbidity with panic disorder. Researchers have also shown significant comorbidity between panic disorder and chronic obstructive pu

Cancer co-medication quality in older patients with polypharmacy: A large randomized trial testing a medication review versus usual care.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) testing medication reviews in geriatric oncology is sparse. METHODS: We conducted a single-blinded RCT in ten rehabilitation clinics across Germany. Patients with common cancers, aged ≥ 65 years, and polypharmacy (regularly ≥ five drugs) were randomly allocated in equal proportions to usual care or a comprehensive pharmacist-led medication review conducted with the validated Fit fOR The Aged (FORTA) list. The FORTA score is the sum of drugs classified as potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) (each two points), drug underuse (e

Nighttime administration of antihypertensive medication: a review of chronotherapy in hypertension.

Hypertension remains a global health concern because of suboptimal blood pressure control despite advancements in antihypertensive treatments. Chronotherapy, defined as evening or bedtime administration of medication based on biological rhythms, is emerging as a potential strategy to improve blood pressure control and treatment outcomes. Clinical trials have investigated the potential effects of nighttime administration of antihypertensive medication in the improvement of 24 hours blood pressure control and reduction of cardiovascular risk. Implementing chronotherapy in clinical practice could

Medication overuse headache: a review of current evidence and management strategies.

The third edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) defines medication-overuse headache (MOH) as a headache that develops when a person regularly uses acute or symptomatic headache medications excessively (10 or more, or 15 or more days per month, depending on the medication) for a period of time longer than 3 months. Even though it may not be reported as frequently as it actually is, it affects about 5% of the general population on average. It typically happens following repeated anti-pain medication use for pre-existing headache disorders, such as migraines.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: A literature review and update.

Since the initial description of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) almost two decades ago, the potential pathophysiology and risk factors have been elaborated on in many investigations and guidelines. However, the definitive pathophysiology based on scientific evidence remains lacking. Consequently, the optimal clinical treatment and prevention strategies for MRONJ have not been established. Despite their different mechanisms of action, many drugs, including bisphosphonates, denosumab, angiogenesis inhibitors, and other medications, have been reported to be associated with MR

Review of functional MRI in HIV: effects of aging and medication.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) is a frequently occurring comorbidity of HIV infection. Evidence suggests this condition starts subclinical before a progression to a symptomatic stage. Blood oxygenated level dependent (BOLD) fMRI has shown to be a sensitive tool to detect abnormal brain function in an early stage and might therefore be useful to evaluate the effect of HIV infection on brain function. An extensive literature search was performed in June 2015. Eligibility criteria for included studies were as follows: (1) conducting with HIV-positive patients, (2) using BOLD fMRI,

Retention in medication-assisted treatment for opiate dependence: A systematic review.

Retention in medication-assisted treatment among opiate-dependent patients is associated with better outcomes. This systematic review (55 articles, 2010-2014) found wide variability in retention rates (i.e., 19%-94% at 3-month, 46%-92% at 4-month, 3%-88% at 6-month, and 37%-91% at 12-month follow-ups in randomized controlled trials), and identified medication and behavioral therapy factors associated with retention. As expected, patients who received naltrexone or buprenorphine had better retention rates than patients who received a placebo or no medication. Consistent with prior research, met

Interactions between oral antineoplastic agents and concomitant medication: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the number of oral antitumoral agents has considerably increased. Oral administration increases the risk of interactions, because most oral anticancer drugs are taken on a daily basis. Interactions can increase exposure to antitumoral agents or cause treatment failure. Many antitumoral drugs undergo enzymatic metabolism by cytochrome P450. As some act as inducers or inhibitors of one or more isoenzymes, they can lead to decreases or increases in plasma concentrations of concomitant drugs. Hence, cytostatic drugs can act not only as victims but also as perpetrator
