Cessations of consciousness in meditation: Advancing a scientific understanding of nirodha samāpatti.

Absence of consciousness can occur due to a concussion, anesthetization, intoxication, epileptic seizure, or other fainting/syncope episode caused by lack of blood flow to the brain. However, some meditation practitioners also report that it is possible to undergo a total absence of consciousness during meditation, lasting up to 7 days, and that these "cessations" can be consistently induced. One form of extended cessation (i.e., nirodha samāpatti) is thought to be different from sleep because practitioners are said to be completely impervious to external stimulation. That is, they cannot be '

The Hitchhiker's Guide to Neurophenomenology - The Case of Studying Self Boundaries With Meditators.

This paper is a practical guide to neurophenomenology. Varela's neurophenomenological research program (NRP) aspires to bridge the gap between, and integrate, first-person (1P) and third-person (3P) approaches to understanding the mind. It does so by suggesting a methodological framework allowing these two irreducible phenomenal domains to relate and reciprocally support the investigation of one another. While highly appealing theoretically, neurophenomenology invites researchers to a challenging methodological endeavor. Based on our experience with empirical neurophenomenological implementati

The effects of meditation on the performance and well-being of a company: A pilot study.

The positive effects of meditation on individual well-being have been extensively investigated in the last few decades. The impact that meditation can have on the surrounding environment, including on the well-being of nearby non-meditators, has been mainly studied in regards to Transcendental Meditation and, more recently, through the purported phenomenon of "distant healing". The aim of the present study was to observe how a corporate environment would be affected when a small percentage of their employees meditated together. In an Italian surface coating company of 229 employees, 12 workers

Meditation music improved the quality of suturing in an experimental bypass procedure.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgeons are vulnerable to additional noise in their natural operating environment. Noise exposure is associated with reduced cognitive function, inability to concentrate, and nervousness. Mediation music provides an opportunity to create a calmer environment which may reduce stress during surgery. METHODS: A pilot study was performed to find a suitable task, meditation music of surgeon's choice, and operation noise and to reach a certain level of training. For the main experiment, two neurosurgeons with different microsurgical experience used real operation noise and meditat

The Effects of Meditation on Grey Matter Atrophy and Neurodegeneration: A Systematic Review.

The present systematic review is based on the premise that a variety of neurodegenerative diseases are accompanied by grey matter atrophy in the brain and meditation may impact this. Given that age is a major risk factor for many of these progressive and neurodegenerative diseases and that the percentage of the population over the age of 65 is quickly increasing, there is an obvious need for prompt treatment and prevention advances in research. As there is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, many are seeking non-pharmacological treatment options in a

Developmental Disruption of GABAAR-Meditated Inhibition in Cntnap2 KO Mice.

GABA released from presynaptic sites induces short-lived phasic inhibition mediated by synaptic GABAA receptors (GABAARs) and longer-duration tonic inhibition mediated by extrasynaptic GABAA or GABAB receptors (GABABRs). A number of studies have found that contactin-associated protein 2 (Cntnap2) knockout (KO) mice, a well-established mouse model of autism, exhibit reduced interneuron numbers and aberrant phasic inhibition. However, little is known about whether tonic inhibition is disrupted in Cntnap2 KO mice and when the disruption of inhibition begins to occur during postnatal development.

The Possible Role of Meditation in Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A New Hypothesis.

BACKGROUND OF HYPOTHESIS: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is the most common musculoskeletal pain disorder of the head and neck area. In the past, several theories were put forth to explain its origin and nature, but none proved complete. Myofascial pain responds to changing psychological states and stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, anger, depression and chronic pain are direct contributional factors. Myofascial pain syndrome may be considered as a psychosomatic disorder. There are numerous accepted palliative approaches, but of all, relaxation techniques stand out and initiate healing at the bas

Meditation Awareness Training for the Treatment of Sex Addiction: A Case Study.

Background Sex addiction is a disorder that can have serious adverse functional consequences. Treatment effectiveness research for sex addiction is currently underdeveloped, and interventions are generally based on the guidelines for treating other behavioral (as well as chemical) addictions. Consequently, there is a need to clinically evaluate tailored treatments that target the specific symptoms of sex addiction. It has been proposed that second-generation mindfulness-based interventions (SG-MBIs) may be an appropriate treatment for sex addiction because in addition to helping individuals in

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation in Prison.

This article presents results from a systematic review and two meta-analyses that examine whether prison yoga and meditation programs are significantly related to increased psychological well-being and improvements in the behavioural functioning of prisoners. Comprehensive searches of the empirical literature were conducted up to December 2014. Participants who completed yoga or meditation program in prison experienced a small increase in their psychological well-being (Cohen's d = 0.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.39, 0.54]) and a small improvement in their behavioural functioning (Cohe

Disentangling the neural mechanisms involved in Hinduism- and Buddhism-related meditations.

The most diffuse forms of meditation derive from Hinduism and Buddhism spiritual traditions. Different cognitive processes are set in place to reach these meditation states. According to an historical-philological hypothesis (Wynne, 2009) the two forms of meditation could be disentangled. While mindfulness is the focus of Buddhist meditation reached by focusing sustained attention on the body, on breathing and on the content of the thoughts, reaching an ineffable state of nothigness accompanied by a loss of sense of self and duality (Samadhi) is the main focus of Hinduism-inspired meditation.

The clinical use of mindfulness meditation for the self-regulation of chronic pain.

Ninety chronic pain patients were trained in mindfulness meditation in a 10-week Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program. Statistically significant reductions were observed in measures of present-moment pain, negative body image, inhibition of activity by pain, symptoms, mood disturbance, and psychological symptomatology, including anxiety and depression. Pain-related drug utilization decreased and activity levels and feelings of self-esteem increased. Improvement appeared to be independent of gender, source of referral, and type of pain. A comparison group of pain patients did not show signif

Acute response and neurophysiological mechanisms of mindfulness meditation in emotional eating.

INTRODUCTION: Emotional eating often leads to adverse health outcomes. Understanding how mindfulness influences emotional eating is crucial for developing strategies to promote healthier eating behaviors and well-being. This study aims to investigate the mechanism and acute response to a mindfulness meditation practice on emotional eating by examining immediate post-intervention effects on brain activity and neurophysiological differences between individuals with and without emotional eating. METHODS: Forty-nine adults were recruited and allocated into two groups based on the emotional eating

Neurophysiology of Mindfulness Meditation: A Narrative Review Based on Buddhist Perspective.

Meditation, an inward journey to explore profound levels of consciousness rooted in Buddhism, has significant physical and psychological benefits, including enhanced well-being, improved concentration, emotional stability, and positive cognitive shifts. This narrative review consolidates past two decades of research on the neurophysiological effects of Buddhist mindfulness meditation based on neuroimaging findings, and aims to examine the Buddhist view of mindfulness meditation in relation to the structural and functional changes in the brain areas in health and diseases. Meditation practices,

Meditation: Philosophical Foundations and its Role in Managing Common Noncommunicable Diseases.

Meditation is a mind-body practice with many methods and variations. Initially practiced for self-realization, meditation has recently been recognized for its health benefits, with modern research exploring its medical applications. Mindfulness and transcendental meditation are the two major meditation types that are widely researched. Globally, the common noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory conditions, and type 2 diabetes mellitus account for over 80% of all premature NCD deaths, the majority of which occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Associations between psychedelic-related and meditation-related variables: A longitudinal study.

Previous research has investigated associations between psychedelic experiences and meditation practice, but knowledge gaps remain. Using a longitudinal research design with a sample of US residents between 18 and 50 years old (N = 13,012), we investigated associations between psychedelic-related and meditation-related variables. The follow-up survey was completed by 7484 respondents, of whom 336 reported psychedelic use during the two-month study. In covariate-adjusted regression models, psychedelic use was associated with greater increases in the number of days of mindfulness and loving-kind

Health and Emotional Modulation through Vipassana Meditation: A Pre-experimental Study.

CONTEXT: Vipassana meditation (VM), a mindfulness-based practice, has been known to promote good health all the way. Global chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and hypertension often bring physical and mental pain together. Through developing emotional regulation and helping to reduce stress, VM can be used as an alternative medicine in combination with the conventional therapies now used for treating this condition. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate how VM alters key health measures, including body weight, blood pressure and sugar levels, pulse rate, bod

Comparing Neural Correlates of Consciousness: From Psychedelics to Hypnosis and Meditation.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods of inducing altered states of consciousness (ASCs) are becoming increasingly relevant in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. While comparisons between them are often drawn, to date no study has directly compared their neural correlates. METHODS: To address this knowledge gap, we directly compared 2 pharmacological methods (psilocybin 0.2 mg/kg orally [n = 23] and lysergic acid diethylamide [LSD] 100 μg orally [n = 25]) and 2 nonpharmacological methods (hypnosis [n = 30] and meditation [n = 29]) using resting-state functional conne

Increased Entropy of Gamma Oscillations in the Frontal Region during Meditation.

Meditation practices are considered mental training and have increasingly received attention from the scientific community due to their potential psychological and physical health benefits. We compared the EEG data recorded from long-term rajayoga practitioners during different meditative and non-meditative periods. Minimum variance modified fuzzy entropy (MVMFE) is computed for each EEG band for all channels of a given lobe. The means across all the channel entropy values were obtained and compared during meditative and non-meditative states. Meditators showed higher frontal entropy in the lo

Psychobiological mechanisms underlying the mood benefits of meditation: A narrative review.

Psychological stressors can lead to distress and result in autonomic arousal and activation of a stress response. Ongoing or persistent stress can disrupt the stress response feedback mechanisms and result in elevated cortisol and pro-inflammatory cytokines which can cause damage to brain regions involved in the regulation of mood and emotion. We propose that the magnitude of the stress response experienced in response to psychological stressors depends on a number of modifiable psychological processes including an individual's level of self-compassion, dispositional mindfulness, tendency to r
