Mercury occurrence in Italian seafood from the Mediterranean Sea and possible intake scenarios of the Italian coastal population.

Mercury (Hg) settlements in the Mediterranean Sea determine a potential toxicological relevance of seafood intakes for coastal populations. To assess this possibility, fish, molluscs, and crustaceans of commercial size of 69 different species were sampled and analyzed for total mercury (Hg(TOT)) from georeferenced areas and evaluated for their compliance with the European Union Maximum Residue Limits of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg wet weight (ww). Accounting for the weekly estimated seafood intake in the Italian coastal population (mean 469-626 g/person/week) it was then possible to recover threshold co…

An unholy disease in the Holy Land: the history of anthrax between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea (1909-2012).

The history of recorded cases of anthrax in human beings and animals from 1909 to 2012 in the area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea is reviewed. The disease was endemic until the middle of the 20th century, but the incidence decreased thereafter, with only sporadic cases from the 1980s onwards. Human cases have not been diagnosed in the region since 1984 and the number of episodes of animal disease has reduced to less than one per year. This decline is mostly due to the disruption of the infective cycle by improved veterinary control, including vaccination, treatment and outb…

Ecological responses of coastal benthic macrofauna to phosphogypsum industrial waste in the Gulf of Gabès (central Mediterranean Sea).

The Gulf of Gabès is subject to intense anthropogenic pressure, mainly from coastal urbanization and phosphate industry activities, including phosphogypsum and effluent discharges. The present study investigated the response of macrobenthic communities to uncontrolled phosphogypsum effluents in the coastal zone of Gabès, based on a two-year seasonal monitoring survey. Twenty sampling stations located downstream from major potential pollution sources were monitored seasonally. A total of 182 macrobenthic taxa were identified, belonging to eight animal phyla and 104 families. Crustaceans (38.5%)

Out of Sight, out of Mind? Evidence of Human-Induced Threats in the Elusive Ziphius cavirostris of the Mediterranean Sea.

Cetaceans in the Mediterranean Sea are increasingly exposed to a suite of anthropogenic threats, including fisheries interactions, vessel strikes, and environmental degradation. While much is known about these impacts on common species, deep-diving and elusive cetaceans like the beaked whale Ziphius cavirostris remain poorly studied due to their offshore distribution and brief surface intervals. This study reports a rare sighting of Z. cavirostris in the Western Mediterranean Sea exhibiting a significant dorsal laceration, potentially linked to human activity. The observation was made during a…

Detection of multi-drug resistance and AmpC β-lactamase/extended-spectrum β-lactamase genes in bacterial isolates of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from the Mediterranean Sea.

Sea turtles are useful sentinels to monitor the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the marine coastal ecosystems. Forty Gram negative bacteria were isolated from wounds of 52 injured Caretta caretta, living in the Mediterranean Sea. Bacteria were identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and tested for susceptibility to 15 antibiotics. In addition, NGS amplicon sequencing was performed to detect the presence of AmpC β-lactamase genes (blaAmpC) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes (blaCTX-M,blaSHV,blaTEM). Seventy-five percent of the isolates (30/40 isolates) exhibited…

Jellyfish Stings Trigger Gill Disorders and Increased Mortality in Farmed Sparus aurata (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea.

Jellyfish are of particular concern for marine finfish aquaculture. In recent years repeated mass mortality episodes of farmed fish were caused by blooms of gelatinous cnidarian stingers, as a consequence of a wide range of hemolytic, cytotoxic, and neurotoxic properties of associated cnidocytes venoms. The mauve stinger jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (Scyphozoa) has been identified as direct causative agent for several documented fish mortality events both in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea aquaculture farms. We investigated the effects of P. noctiluca envenomations on the gilthead sea…

Speciation of trace metals in coastal sediments of El-Mex Bay south Mediterranean Sea-west of Alexandria (Egypt).

Sediments of El-Mex Bay estuary on the southern Mediterranean Sea have been analyzed for trace metals after sediment fractionation by sequential leaching. A sequential extraction procedure was applied to identify forms of Mn, Cu, Cd, Cr, Zn and Fe. The five steps of the sequential extraction procedure partitioned metals into: CH3COONH(4) extractable (F1); NaOAC carbonate extractable (F2); NH(2)OH.HCl/CH(3)COOH reducible extractable (F3); H(2)O(2)-HNO3 organic extractable (F4) and NHO3/HClO4/HF acid soluble residue (F5). Extracted concentrations of trace metals analyzed after all five steps, we…

Air pollution survey across the western Mediterranean Sea: overview on oxygenated volatile hydrocarbons (OVOCs) and other gaseous pollutants.

Despite the Mediterranean Sea basin is among the most sensitive areas over the world for climate change and air quality issues, it still remains less studied than the oceanic regions. The domain investigated by the research ship Minerva Uno cruise in Summer 2015 was the Tyrrhenian Sea. An overview on the marine boundary layer (MBL) concentration levels of carbonyl compounds, ozone (O3), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) is reported. The north-western Tyrrhenian Sea samples showed a statistically significant difference in acetone and SO2 concentrations when compared to the south-eastern ones. Acetone an…

Molecular identification and pathology of Anisakis pegreffii (Nematoda: Anisakidae) infection in the Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

Nematodes of genus Anisakis spp. parasitize a wide range of marine hosts with marine mammals (mainly cetaceans) serving as definitive hosts, while fish, squid and other invertebrates serve as paratenic or intermediate hosts. Sea turtles can act as accidental or paratenic hosts for Anisakis spp. larvae, harbouring third-stage larvae unable to complete their life cycle in an ectothermic vertebrate. Post-mortem examination of 96 loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) stranded along the Italian coast of the Mediterranean Sea showed infection by Anisakis larvae Type I from 4 of 6 locations that w…

External quality assessment of Rift Valley fever diagnosis in 17 veterinary laboratories of the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an arboviral zoonosis that primarily affects ruminants but can also cause illness in humans. The increasing impact of RVF in Africa and Middle East and the risk of expansion to other areas such as Europe, where competent mosquitos are already established, require the implementation of efficient surveillance programs in animal populations. For that, it is pivotal to regularly assess the performance of existing diagnostic tests and to evaluate the capacity of veterinary labs of endemic and non-endemic countries to detect the infection in an accurate and timely manner.

Origin and distribution of hydrocarbons and organic matter in the surficial sediments of the Sfax-Kerkennah channel (Tunisia, Southern Mediterranean Sea).

We investigated the origin and distribution of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs and PAHs) and organic matter (OM) in surficial sediments of the Sfax-Kerkennah channel in the Gulf of Gabès (Tunisia, Southern Mediterranean Sea). TOC, AH and PAH concentrations ranged 2.3-11.7%, 8-174μgg-1sed.dw and 175-10,769ngg-1sed.dw, respectively. The lowest concentrations were recorded in the channel (medium sand sediment) and the highest ones in the Sfax harbor (very fine sand sediment). AHs, PAHs and TOC were not correlated for most of the stations. TOC/N and δ13C values revealed a mixed…

A portrait of Staphylococcus aureus from the other side of the Mediterranean Sea: molecular characteristics of isolates from Western Algeria.

Algerian hospitals have experienced a dramatic increase in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) prevalence in recent years. To investigate this phenomenon, we have determined molecular characteristics of 61 methicillin-resistant or -susceptible strains isolated between 2003 and 2007 in Oran Hospital. Susceptible isolates were related to diverse genetic backgrounds, of which clone with sequence type (ST) 8 accounted for most of the samples. Resistance to methicillin was almost limited to two international spreading clones; the most frequent, ST80, contained isolates producing Pant

Two divers submerged in the Mediterranean Sea for 30 years: persistence of adipocere and implications for postmortem submersion interval estimation.

Estimation of the postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) remains challenging in bodies recovered from aquatic environments, particularly after prolonged submersion and in the presence of adipocere. We report the cases of two divers who disappeared during the same accident in the Mediterranean Sea in December 1993 and were recovered 30 years later at depths of 103 and 113 m, 13 m apart. Both bodies underwent whole-body postmortem computed tomography, external examination, autopsy, toxicological analyses, and genetic identification. Both showed advanced skeletonization predominantly affecting the…

The effect of ocean alkalinity enhancement on zooplankton standing stock and community composition in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea: a mesocosm study.

Ocean acidification (OA) due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions has significantly altered ocean chemistry since the industrial era. Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is an innovative strategy to mitigate excess CO2, with ocean liming (OL) serving as a potential carbon dioxide removal (CDR) method, through the spreading of Ca(OH)2 (slaked lime) at the ocean surface. This study examined the ecological effects of OL on a natural zooplankton community from the ultraoligotrophic Eastern Mediterranean Sea during a 14-day mesocosm experiment conducted in spring-summer. We investigated how varying concen…
