The study of the molecular regulation mechanism of melanin synthesis during animal development has become a new focus recently . The synthesis and production of melanin during animal development are regulated by many genes. This paper summarized the molecular function mechanism of melanocortin-1-receptor (MC1R) gene and the relationship between the consequences of polymorphic variation of the gene and melanin traits, in addition to summarized the identification and mutation of MC1R gene in birds. Furthermore, the melanin synthesis mechanism in birds is also discussed here.

Quinolone has become one of the common causative agents of drug-induced photosensitive dermatitis, and its phototoxicity has now become a clinical issue. The authors report a case of a choroid plexus papilloma in the fourth ventricle containing melanin pigment. The pigmented granules in this tumor were positive for Fontana-Masson, periodic acid-Schiff, acid fast and Sudan staining, suggesting that the pigment contained lipofuscin as well as melanin. The possibility that the melanin derived from lipofuscin by "melanization" through pseudoperoxydation is discussed.

Melanin inhibitor (symbol I) is shown to be inherited as a dominant to the wild type and independent of the albino locus. The gene inhibits the formation of melanin in the less intensely pigmented regions of the coat, namely, the agouti areas between the tabby pattern and the proximal portion of the hair. The only regions of the coat to retain pigment are the distal hair of the agouti areas and the tabby pattern. The photoprotective role of melanin was evaluated by comparing the transmission of ultraviolet (UV) radiation through skin samples of blacks and Caucasians, using both biologic and spectroscopic techniques. UVA transmission was measured using fluoranthene, which causes a phototoxic response to UVA wavelength.
