A new infaunal species of the genus Enosteoides Johnson, 1970 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura: Porcellanidae) from Okinawa, southwestern Japan.

A new porcellanid species of the genus Enosteoides Johnson, 1970 is described on the basis of a single specimen collected from the burrow of an unidentified snapping shrimp of the genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798, on the subtidal coarse sediment in Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. Enosteoides lapis n. sp. is similar to E. melissa (Miyake, 1942) and E. philippinensis Dolorosa Werding, 2014 in the general morphology of the frontal region of the carapace, third thoracic sternite, and ambulatory legs, but is distinguished from both by the dorsal surface of the carapace being more s

Physiological impacts of valerian extract and lemon balm on some neurobiomarkers in broilers.

BACKGROUND: Two flowering plants, Valeriana officinalis L. (valerian) and Melissa officinalis L. (lemon balm), have a sedative effect. Valerianic acid, flavonoids, and iridoids have been discovered in many distinct compounds; these compounds have anxiolytic characteristics and have been frequently utilized as a measure of sedative effect. Lemon balm has been shown to have antiseptic, antipyretic, spasm-relieving, and calming properties. AIM: Our study aimed to judge the efficiency of the two extracts for sedation in order to offer the poultry industry more substantial physiological upsides.

Lemon balm and dandelion leaf extract synergistically alleviate ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity by enhancing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

We investigated the effect of a 2:1 (w/w) mixture of lemon balm and dandelion extracts (LD) on ethanol (EtOH)-mediated liver injury and explored the underlying mechanisms. Administration of LD synergistically reduced relative liver weight and decreased the levels of serum biomarkers of hepatic injury. Histopathological and biochemical analyses indicated that LD synergistically attenuated hepatic accumulation of triacylglycerides (TGs) and restored the levels of mRNAs related to fatty acid metabolism. In addition, LD significantly reduced EtOH-induced hepatic oxidative stress by attenuating the

A Review of The Efficacy of Complementary and Alternative Medicines in Managing Dermatologic Infectious Diseases.

Dermatologic infections, particularly fungal and viral, are globally prevalent and often lead patients to seek complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs). This review critically evaluates 17 studies investigating CAM efficacy in treating dermatologic infectious diseases, focusing on those evaluated in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Tea tree oil shows modest benefit for fungal infections such as tinea pedis and onychomycosis, though studies are limited by poor blinding and dropout rates. For herpes simplex virus (HSV), propolis and Melissa officinalis demonstrate potential antiviral e

Targeting Autoimmune Myocarditis with Lemon Balm Extract: In Vivo Molecular Approach.

Due to the complex pathophysiology and serious outcomes of autoimmune myocarditis, we sought to determine whether ethanolic lemon balm extract (LBE) could attenuate disease progression and development of dilative cardiomyopathy (DCM). EAM was induced in Dark Agouti rats by immunization with porcine myosin. Fifty animals were allocated to five groups: healthy controls, untreated EAM, and EAM treated with LBE (50, 100, or 200 mg/kg) for six weeks. Hemodynamic parameters were monitored, and echocardiography assessed cardiac structure and function. Inflammatory, oxidative, fibrotic, and apoptotic

Plant-based medicines for anxiety disorders, part 2: a review of clinical studies with supporting preclinical evidence.

Research in the area of herbal psychopharmacology has revealed a variety of promising medicines that may provide benefit in the treatment of general anxiety and specific anxiety disorders. However, a comprehensive review of plant-based anxiolytics has been absent to date. Thus, our aim was to provide a comprehensive narrative review of plant-based medicines that have clinical and/or preclinical evidence of anxiolytic activity. We present the article in two parts. In part one, we reviewed herbal medicines for which only preclinical investigations for anxiolytic activity have been performed. In

Diversity in principal constituents of plants with a lemony scent and the predominance of citral.

In this study, we extracted essential oils from four species of plants with lemony scents (Melissa officinalis L., Aloysia citriodora Palau (= Lippia citriodora (Palau) Kunth), Thymus × citriodorus, Perilla citriodora (Makino) Nakai). We then examined the components of extracts using gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A comparison of components indicated that the largest proportions of essential oils were caryophyllene (25%) in M. officinalis, geraniol (50%) in T. citriodorus, and citral (61 and 82%) in A. citriodora and P. citriodora. Moreover, we used a sensory evaluat

Volatile Transference and Antimicrobial Activity of Cheeses Made with Ewes' Milk Fortified with Essential Oils.

During the last decades, essential oils (EOs) have been proven to be a natural alternative to additives or pasteurization for the prevention of microbial spoilage in several food matrices. In this work, we tested the antimicrobial activity of EOs from Melissa officinalis, Ocimum basilicum, and Thymus vulgaris against three different microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Clostridium tyrobutyricum, and Penicillium verrucosum. Pressed ewes' cheese made from milk fortified with EOs (250 mg/kg) was used as a model. The carryover effect of each oil was studied by analyzing the volatile fraction of dairy

Potential benefits of phytochemicals against Alzheimer's disease.

Our current therapeutic drugs for Alzheimer's disease are predominantly derived from the alkaloid class of plant phytochemicals. These drugs, such as galantamine and rivastigmine, attenuate the decline in the cholinergic system but, as the alkaloids occupy the most dangerous end of the phytochemical spectrum (indeed they function as feeding deterrents and poisons to other organisms within the plant itself), they are often associated with unpleasant side effects. In addition, these cholinesterase inhibiting alkaloids target only one system in a disorder, which is typified by multifactorial defi

Adsorption Properties of Essential Oils on Polylactic Acid Microparticles of Different Sizes.

The interaction between the polymer and the materials in contact with it affects its applicability. This can be particularly important in applications such as packaging or controlled drug delivery systems. Because of these interactions, the adsorption and diffusion properties of polylactic acid (PLA) are important. The absorption capacity of different polylactic acid particles for different additives like essential oils (Thymus vulgaris, Melissa officinalis, and Foeniculum vulgare essential oils) was investigated depending on the concentration of the essential oil. The PLA microparticles were
