INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that has become a leading cause of death in recent years. Impairments in spatial learning and memory are an important clinical feature of AD. Melatonin (MLT), the main product secreted by the pineal gland, showed multiple antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties.
PURPOSE: The present study aimed to explore the possible prophylactic effects of MLT against spatial memory deficits in a sporadic mouse model of AD induced by D-galactose and aluminium chloride (AlCl3).
METHODS: Four groups of mice (n = 10 p

Neuropsychological studies have demonstrated that Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with various cognitive deficits ultimately leading in about 30% of patients to the development of dementia. These studies have demonstrated also a greater decrement of right hemispheric functions with visuospatial deficits occurring in up to 90% of PD patients. The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF) Test has been employed in the assessment of right hemispheric functions and particularly for the evaluation of visuoconstructive abilities and short-term visual memory. I have demonstrated recently that exter

The concealed information test (CIT) aims at identifying knowledge that a person wants to hide, by measuring physiological indices during the presentation of known versus unknown items. Recently, Lancry-Dayan et al. (Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition, 7 (2), 291-302, 2018) proposed a new version of this test that included a short-term memory task to maximize differences between responses to items. Participants were asked to memorize four pictures of faces that included one face of an acquaintance. The authors observed that participants looked at the familiar face during the f

A wide range of human activities are performed sequentially in few seconds. We need to maintain a correct temporal order of words in language, movements in actions, directions in navigation, etc. Therefore, it is plausible, in a more economical perspective, that our brain is equipped with a dedicated mechanism for storing a temporal sequence for a short time. To investigate it, we run four TMS experiments, in which participants performed different short-term memory tasks, i.e., three (verbal, spatial, motor) requiring maintenance of an ordered sequence and one (visual) of a static pattern. We

This article reports two studies that investigate short-term memory (STM) deficits in dyslexic children and explores the relationship between STM and reading acquisition. In the first experiment, 36 dyslexic children and 61 control children performed an item STM task and a serial order STM task. The results of this experiment show that dyslexic children do not suffer from a specific serial order STM deficit. In addition, the results demonstrate that phonological processing skills are as closely related to both item STM and serial order STM. However, non-verbal intelligence was more strongly in

Insight into the neural architecture of multitasking is crucial when investigating the pathophysiology of multitasking deficits in clinical populations. Presently, little is known about how the brain combines dual-tasking with a concurrent short-term memory task, despite the relevance of this mental operation in daily life and the frequency of complaints related to this process, in disease. In this study we aimed to examine how the brain responds when a memory task is added to dual-tasking. Thirty-three right-handed healthy volunteers (20 females, mean age 39.9 ± 5.8) were examined with functi

PURPOSE: Stress has a deteriorating effect on hippocampal function. It also contributes to symptom exacerbation in many disease states, including overactive bladder and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome. We investigated the effects of various types of stresses (restraint, noise, and cold) on short-term memory and apoptosis in relation with corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) expression.
METHODS: Rats in the restraint stress group were restrained in a transparent Plexiglas cylinder for 60 minutes twice daily. Rats in the noise stress group were exposed to the 120 dB supersonic machi

In order to better understand the nature of verbal short-term memory (STM) deficits in dyslexic children, the present study used the distinction between item and serial order retention capacities in STM tasks. According to recent STM models, storage of verbal item information depends very directly upon the richness of underlying phonological and semantic representations. On the other hand, storage of serial order information appears to reflect a language-independent system. Hence, if there is a fundamental STM deficit in dyslexia that is not to be explained only by the poor phonological proces

We aimed to determine whether human subjects' reliance on different sources of spatial information encoded in different frames of reference (i.e., egocentric versus allocentric) affects their performance, decision time and memory capacity in a short-term spatial memory task performed in the real world. Subjects were asked to play the Memory game (a.k.a. the Concentration game) without an opponent, in four different conditions that controlled for the subjects' reliance on egocentric and/or allocentric frames of reference for the elaboration of a spatial representation of the image locations ena

AIMS: Studies have shown cognitive problems in adults treated with anticholinergics. It is unclear if children are also susceptible to anticholinergic adverse effects. This study evaluates the effects of long-acting oxybutynin and tolterodine on short-term memory and attention in children with urgency and urge incontinence.
METHODS: Children with urgency or urge incontinence were recruited to take part in a prospective, randomized double-blinded placebo controlled trial using long-acting oxybutynin or tolterodine. Patients underwent a baseline test of their memory/recall ability and attention

BACKGROUND: The objective of the current study was to evaluate the short-term effects of radiotherapy on attention and memory performance in patients with brain tumors.
METHODS: Thirteen patients underwent a neuropsychologic examination on three occasions: at baseline before radiotherapy, which lasted for 6 weeks; within 2 weeks after the completion of radiotherapy; and 3 months after the completion of radiotherapy. Thirty healthy individuals were studied at baseline as a control group. Verbal, visuomotor, and memory tests were administered. Attentional performances were examined using CogniS

Individuals with Down syndrome suffer from relatively poor verbal short-term memory. Previous explanations of this deficit have been framed in terms of inefficient or absent rehearsal of verbal material in Down syndrome within the phonological loop component of Baddeley and Hitch's (1974) working memory model. Two experiments are presented which test this explanation by looking for the markers of rehearsal in children with Down syndrome and verbal mental age matched controls. Both experiments confirm that individuals with Down syndrome show poorer verbal short-term memory performance than cont

Daytime napping and its effects on 145 female shiftworkers were studied by comparing the individual characteristics, alertness, and short-term memory performance of subjects who took or did not take naps. Of the subjects 56% (n = 82) took a nap before a night shift and 21% (n = 30) after a morning shift. After a morning shift, napping was more frequent among evening types and subjects living alone (not married). Before a night shift, daytime napping was not connected to individual characteristics, but the total sleep time of nappers during the preceding night was shorter than that of non-nappe

Poor short-term memory (STM) capacity in individuals with dyslexia (IDDs) and enhanced STM capacity in musicians are well documented, yet their causes are disputed. Previous studies also found poor use of stimuli statistics by IDDs and enhanced use by musicians. We hypothesized that these observations are functionally related, as follows: Enhanced sensitivity to statistics facilitates musicians' benefit from each exposure, and reduced sensitivity to statistics hinders IDDs' benefit. Thus, larger group differences are expected for larger exposure: STM capacity, which is sensitive to item famili

BACKGROUND: Cardiac memory (CM) can be induced by both short and long period of pacing from the right ventricle. Although several mechanisms have been proposed in animal studies, mechanisms of CM in humans are not well studied.
METHODS: A total of 46 patients (20 females; mean age 46+/-13 years) with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia referred for catheter ablation were enrolled. After catheter ablation, CM was induced by 20 min of pacing from right ventricular apex (RVA). The CM was quantified as the difference of T wave area in each lead between baseline and after RVA pacing. After com

The recycling process of acetylcholine (ACh) was studied in reference to muscle potentials evoked by sciatic stimuli in the presence of neostigmine. Wistar rats around 20 days old were anesthetized with urethane. Muscle potentials were recorded with concentric electrodes from their exposed medial gastrocnemius muscles before and after the injection of neostigmine. Attention was paid to changes in muscle potentials evoked by a set of 3 stimuli, and comparison was made mainly between successive two sets. Three potentials before neostigmine treatment were similar in amplitude. When a set of 3 sti

Ts65Dn (TS), control littermates (CO) and Swiss (SW) male mice were tested in the elevated plus-maze and in the Morris water maze (MWM) for memory evaluation. In the plus-maze, each mouse was placed at the end of an open arm and initial freezing and the time to enter into an enclosed arm (transfer latency) were measured. SW mice decreased both measures over repeated trials, whereas no decrease of freezing was observed in CO mice, thus suggesting increased emotionality in this group. Compared to CO mice, TS mice showed less initial freezing, shorter transfer latencies, and spent less time in en

The Short-Term Memory Conjunctive Binding (STMCB) test assesses the ability to maintain integrated shape-colour associations in memory. It has been applied to detect Alzheimer's disease (AD) across the continuum, from preclinical stages and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) to dementia. The objective of the present study was to examine whether the STMCB test can differentiate individuals at very early stages of AD from controls. The sample included 67 participants with normal performance on standard neuropsychological tests. Participants were classified as controls or as having SCD based on s
