Episodic memory rehabilitation for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders: A scoping review.

Despite extensive research on HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), interest in cognitive rehabilitation has emerged only within the past 15 years. HAND are characterised by mild-to-moderate impairments in multiple cognitive domains: attention, episodic memory and executive functions. In the context of HAND, the prevalence of episodic memory disorders is high, ranging from 40% to 65% across studies. This scoping review aims to identify available evidence of rehabilitation programmes targeting episodic memory disorders associated with HIV and to examine their characteristics and theor

Hypothalamic pregnenolone mediates recognition memory in the context of metabolic disorders.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are associated with cognitive dysfunction. Because the hypothalamus is implicated in energy balance control and memory disorders, we hypothesized that specific neurons in this brain region are at the interface of metabolism and cognition. Acute obesogenic diet administration in mice impaired recognition memory due to defective production of the neurosteroid precursor pregnenolone in the hypothalamus. Genetic interference with pregnenolone synthesis by Star deletion in hypothalamic POMC, but not AgRP neurons, deteriorated recognition memory independently of metabolic

Effects of Erythropoietin on Hippocampal Volume and Memory in Mood Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Persistent cognitive dysfunction in depression and bipolar disorder (BD) impedes patients' functional recovery. Erythropoietin (EPO) increases neuroplasticity and reduces cognitive difficulties in treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and remitted BD. This magnetic resonance imaging study assessed the neuroanatomical basis for these effects. METHODS: Patients with TRD who were moderately depressed or BD in partial remission were randomized to 8 weekly EPO (40,000 IU) or saline infusions in a double-blind, parallel-group design. Patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging, memory

Vascular cognitive disorders: memory, mental speed and cognitive flexibility after stroke.

This study investigated the occurrence of cognitive disorders 1 and 6 months after stroke in a cohort of patients with a first-ever stroke. In addition, it was investigated whether age, sex and level of education are risk factors for vascular cognitive disorders. Memory, simple speed, cognitive flexibility and overall cognitive functioning were examined in 139 patients at 1 and 6 months post-stroke. Inclusion criteria on admission were first cerebral stroke, age>/=40, no other neurological or psychiatric disorders and ability to communicate. Mean age was 69.3 years (S.D.=12.3). Patients were c

A slow wave investigation of working memory biases in mood disorders.

Mood-congruent working memory biases were examined in a delayed matching to sample paradigm using the slow wave (SW) event-related brain potential (ERP) component. Mood-congruent working memory biases, indexed by SW amplitudes, were demonstrated among individuals experiencing a major depressive episode (MDE) and nondepressed controls but not individuals with dysthymia. However, analyses of symptom severity demonstrated that those with dysthymia exhibited significantly less negative SW amplitudes with increasing depressive mood severity, whereas individuals with major depression demonstrated mo

Prospective memory in adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders: exploring effects of implementation intentions and retrospective memory load.

This study examined, for the first time, the impact of implementation intentions on prospective memory (PM) performance in adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and further explored the role of retrospective memory for PM in ASD. PM was assessed with Virtual Week, a computerized game simulating upcoming everyday-life tasks. Twenty-seven adults with ASD and 27 age- and ability-matched controls were included. Half of the participants were instructed to form implementation intentions (i.e., encoding PM tasks in form of if-then statements), while the rest received simple PM instructions. Res

Memory functioning in children with reading disabilities and/or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a clinical investigation of their working memory and long-term memory functioning.

We examined memory functioning in children with reading disabilities (RD), Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and RD/ADHD using a clinic sample with a clinical instrument: the Children's Memory Scale, enhancing its generalizability. Participants included 23 children with RD, 30 with ADHD, 30 with RD/ADHD, and 30 controls. Children with RD presented with reduced verbal short-term memory (STM) but intact visual STM, central executive (CE), and long-term memory (LTM) functioning. Their deficit in STM appeared specific to tasks requiring phonetic coding of material. Children with ADH

Involuntary autobiographical memories as a transdiagnostic factor in mental disorders.

Involuntary autobiographical memories are memories of personal events that come to mind with no preceding retrieval attempts. They have been studied broadly in autobiographical memory for decades and shown to be common and mostly positive in everyday life. Clinical literature has focused on negative intrusive memories of stressful events and tended to neglect other forms of involuntary autobiographical memories. However, recently, there has been an upsurge of research addressing involuntary memories more broadly in clinical disorders, including both stressful and mundane memories, and both rea

Trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder severity, and positive memories.

Positive memories play an important role in the aetiology and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, most trauma research/clinical work has focused solely on the role of traumatic memories. Thus, we examined the relationship between count of retrieved positive memories and PTSD severity, factors associated with count of retrieved positive memories (i.e., rumination, negative/positive emotion dysregulation, fear of positive emotions), and the relationship between positive memory phenomenological domains and PTSD severity. The sample included 185 trauma-exposed participant

Patterns of autobiographical memory in adults with autism spectrum disorder.

Two studies are presented that explored the effects of experimental manipulations on the quality and accessibility of autobiographical memories in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), relative to a typical comparison group matched for age, gender and IQ. Both studies found that the adults with ASD generated fewer specific memories than the comparison group, and took significantly longer to do so. Despite this, experimental manipulations affected two indices of autobiographical memory (specificity and retrieval latency) similarly in both groups. These results suggest that adults with ASD

Memory illusion in high-functioning autism and Asperger's disorder.

In this study, 13 individuals with high-functioning autism (HFA), 15 individuals with Asperger's disorder (AD), and age-, and IQ-matched controls were presented a list of sentences auditorily. Participants then evaluated semantically related but new sentences and reported whether they were old or new. The total rates of false recognition for semantically related sentences were similar among the three groups. Nevertheless, memory illusion on some aspects was reduced in HFA participants. These results suggest that HFA have difficulties in semantic association. Although individuals with AD showed

Explicit and implicit memory biases in depression and panic disorder.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the presence of a bias for emotional information (panic-related, depression-related, positive and neutral) in explicit memory and implicit memory (by means of free recall and word-stem completion tasks, respectively) among depressed (N=20) and panic (N=20) patients. Three different encoding conditions (graphemic, semantic and self-reference) were used. The results of this study failed to show the existence of a mood-congruent memory bias for both implicit and explicit memory in these emotional disorders. According to the correlational analyse

Explicit and implicit memory bias in panic disorder with agoraphobia.

Thirty patients with a diagnosis of panic disorder with agoraphobia and 30 normal controls were compared on explicit memory (cued recall) and implicit memory (word stem completion) for positive, neutral, social threat, and physical threat words. The panic patients showed an explicit memory bias, but no implicit memory bias, for physical threat words. The index of explicit memory bias for physical threat words was found to correlate with anxiety sensitivity and degree of agoraphobic fear and avoidance. The index of baseline bias for threat words on the word completion task, on the other hand, c

[Disordered retrograde memory: diagnostic procedures in brain damage].

The maintenance of old memories subsequent to brain damage is discussed with the particular aim of pointing out problems and possibilities of measuring them post-injury. Relationships between forms of brain damage and retrograde amnesia are outlined, and various recent tests designed to measure old memories are specified and assessed. From this survey it is concluded that tests and test batteries are rather heterogenous so far and at best only crudely comparable between studies, and that a clinically practicable (i.e., short), yet valid and reliable test still has to be created.

Learning and Memory Impairments With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

ADHD is a common chronic neurodevelopmental disorder and is characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity and are often accompanied by learning and memory impairment. Great evidence has shown that learning and memory impairment of ADHD plays an important role in its executive function deficits, which seriously affects the development of academic, cognitive and daily social skills and will cause a serious burden on families and society. With the increasing attention paid to learning and memory impairment in ADHD, relevant research is gradually increasing. In this article,

Zebrafish as a Tool in the Study of Sleep and Memory-related Disorders.

Sleep is an evolutionarily conserved phenomenon, being an important biological necessity for the learning process and memory consolidation. The brain displays two types of electrical activity during sleep: slow-wave activity or Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep, and desynchronized brain wave activity or Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. There are many theories regarding "Why we need to sleep?"; one of them is the synaptic homeostasis. This theory suggests the role of sleep in the restoration of synaptic homeostasis, which is destabilized by synaptic strengthening triggered by learning during w
