OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of cochlear implantation (CI) on vestibular symptoms in patients with Meniere disease (MD).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Single tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Patients with MD, who underwent CI between 2011 and 2024 and had documentation of preoperative and postoperative vestibular symptoms.
INTERVENTION: Placement of a cochlear implant for hearing rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: This study adopted an inner ear test battery comprising audiometry, and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP), cervical VEMP (cVEMP), and caloric tests to investigate the sequence of inner ear deficits in pediatric Meniere's disease (MD).
METHODS: From 2005 to 2016, a total of 24 MD children aged <15 years old underwent otoscopy, CT scan, blood test, and an inner ear test battery. Menière disease usually begins in adults from 20 to 60 years old, and occurs in more than 10% of patients older than 65. The treatment of Menière disease in the elderly represents a challenge because of polymedication. Antivertiginous drugs such as betahistine and cinnarizin give good results with minor secondary effects. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Review of the role of aquaporins in inner ear homeostasis and potential role in the pathogenesis of Meniere's disease.

Two clinically useful measures to quantify the morbidity of Meniere's disease are the daily vertigo diary card and the Meniere's Disease Patient-Oriented Severity Index (MD POSI). The development and application of these outcomes instruments for patients with vertigo are discussed.
